I recommend starting with a fast attack (50ms) and slow attack (30ms). Speed up the attack until you hear it flatten the transients in an unpleasant way. Then slow down the release until you hear the gain reduction cutting off the following transients and then pulling it back until it feels in time. This is just another way to approach it. Some people will prefer using Devvon's but I prefer this way. Happy compressing!
You’re an awesome teacher, thank you for making these videos. I’ve been mixing for 15 years and I’m learning so much, I had some bad habits but it’s nice to learn better ways to mix. Beat tutorials I’ve seen, thank you!
Appreciate the information, man. I normally have it at its fastest attack and release, mess with the attack first and then back off on the release. I had actually been wondering if I could do what you just said so I'm going to test it out tonight. Respect, man.
GREAT TEACHING REALLY HELPED ALOT, ITS WAS THE ONE AND ONLY THING I ALWAYS SKIPPED WHEN IT CAME TO COMPRESSION , THIS REALLY HELPED ME LOOK AT RELEASE AND ATTACK IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT, NOW I CAN START PRATICING, DOPE!!! THANKS STAY BLESSED!!!
Great tutorial! When starting out it's hard to find the sweet spot in compression as some parts need to breath more than others. +1 on train your ears.
Nice looking bra, I like how you demonstrated that for the newbies like myself who's ears are still in train mode. And that R comp compressor is dope with color and not complicated 💪🏿👌🏾
@@HelpMeDevvon oh yeah dude I've already subbed and watched a ton of your tutorials! haha I've also gone to college for music but I feel like I'm learning such dope techniques here and it's helping me with my own music 🔥
To those seeing the arc still engaged just know that after much experimentation I’ve found that the release slider still has functionality. I kno we’ve all been taught that once that is engaged the release slider has no function but I’ve genuinely found it to still have some functionality not as hard as the manual release but still has some and I’ve always been attracted to the assistant sound. Please dm on @helpmedevvon ig is love to show anyone my findings
Devvon I need your help please!! Whats the best Compressors (and also in what order), to use for Rapping vocals? Do I use just one compressor or more? Help please!
My man, ya got any suggestions for mixing and mastering guitar with and without vocals? Sort of like a general approach; I do a lot of different guitar techniques from percussive fingerstyle to playing like a violin and it's difficult to get a coherent feel when I just use a guitar... Seems like the more space I try to create the more distracting the notes feel, especially on the transitions from intro to verse to chorus, different phrases etc.
What is the difference between Static mixing and gain staging. Im confused coming to this part. Do i do them both or i just do 1 at the beginning of my mixing session.
Hey Dev, so imma post on multiple vids cuz i want this. But can you do a tutorial on how to mix Jack Harlow vocals? His is unique in the way that hes got a pretty deep vocal buts it pretty wide. Thanks
I brought the Flowers and Roses vocal chain preset pack. The (2) Valhalla reverb presets are not coming up correctly. Can you email me a screenshot shot of both of the presets from the pack. I sent an email to info@.... Thanx!
WDYM we will talk about ARC and Manual another day... that setting is especially crucial on this compressor specifically otherwise all the work you just did on the release is null and void 😄
Not true at all and if you’d like me to show you why and how dm me on ig @helpmedevvon i literally did this with 13 people already and have blown their minds dm me you’re next lol hit me
i have a really hard time listening for a sweet spot. no compression at all keeps sounding better to me cuz its louder, theres no way to automatically up the gain to your changes in real time for an accurate comparison. i try some guess work, do a before and after, and barely hear a difference, even with 6 db of reduction.
Hey bro! Would love for you to listen to my last track release and let me know your opinion on the mix. Been watching your stuff and im learning a lot from you 💪🏼
Compression tutorials om youtube isn't really helping that much since we can't identify the audio because youtube already had compressed it all it sounds the same all the time ... Unlike you were in your daw you hear really differences

Hey Devvon, can you do a tutorial on how to get a vocal mix similar to Waves of Blue by Majid Jordan?

tHANK yOu!
whats your opinion how should i manage vocal peaks should i use something like peak limiter or does that ruin the dynamics?
Can u make a video about how u professionally mix beats?
Devvon I need your help please!! Whats the best Compressors (and also in what order), to use for Rapping vocals? Do I use just one compressor or more? Help please!
Hi Devvon. Just wondering what your best preset is for raw hip hop/rap vocals without auto tune distortion?

I'm always looking for good pulsation! Good stuff Devvon!!
Would I match the threshold with the original dB?

Thanks bro, You look like Jordan Ayew btw

I heard about set the attack and release using bpm a lot , but no one explain it can anyone explain how to calculate it please
What theme is this
My nigga, you are the truth.
💯
Why yu don't use rvox?
Curious as to why you adjust the release first and do you always do it that way?
I like to adjust the release first for this technique because it’s a very obvious change !
Thank you
