Was it from an edition in which the Necrons were the big bad for the edition? Was this Imotekh's introduction into the lore? Or at least the edition he was created?
I wouldn't call Custodes attitude arrogant but confident. They are The Emperor's Personal Guard, His Companions. Created individually by Him to be the Very Best the Imperium has. They are not Arrogant, for that would suggest that they simply believe themselves to be superior. They are confident, bc they Know that they Are superior to all but the most powerful warriors in the Galaxy.

Very cool story. It's kind of nice to see Space Marines lose, it really puts the dire circumstances that the Imperium is in into perspective. Sometimes even being a Super Hero isn't enough!
Helbrecht was a beautiful paradox. A true knight in the way that people dislike. They picture knights as these men in shining armor, speaking prettily, rescuing princesses, and wandering around like a monk giving alms to the poor. This is because people have consumed more Disney than they have history. Knights, at Least those that truly served in combat - not those for whom the title was given for other traits such as music or poetry - were often very rough men. Very well educated, well fed, arrogant, gruff, and yet kind. They'd edge their horse over next to you, and kick you in the teeth with the steel cap of their boots - for talking trash to them. They had position, they demanded respect, and they knew that no one would ever do anything to them if they happened to spit you over an open fire using a lance. That said - they'd rarely bother people who were just going about their lives. They tended to be courteous to women and children, and even men unless given a reason to do otherwise. They were men in brutal, callous times, lives dedicated to bloodshed and gore, and at the same time they were nobility. They had lands, serfs, diplomatic missions, and far more. Truly a paradoxical group. For some of the best, most historically accurate (Insofar as can be gleaned from old writings from the 900s-1600s that spoke of knights, and their mannerisms/attitudes.) as far as giving a proper representation of knights... and just amazingly good books: Author: David Eddings Series: The Elenium The Tamuli
remember Dorns suicide attack on the iron cage, fuelled by hate, rage and pure bloody minded stubbornness? Thats how the templars take after their gene daddy.
You know, I feel like the massed numbers of the necrons and the high casualties they can inflict even on armored opponents should make the astartes, what with their numbers of like, 5000 to a chapter uniquely unequipped to fight them. Are the casualties described in this story just like, a few dozen? I am never sure how the astartes with their famously difficult and slow replacement rate are able to sustain large wars of attrition like this.
My God, this was one hell of a story. As much as I'm a Black Templar fan I do like seeing other races being badasses as well. I always think it's such a shame that GW writes one cool xeno story for every 10 space marine stories. Ain't nothing to give a good ol' purging if there ain't no badasses left in the galaxy to stir up the trouble
Imotek is a beast and it is no slight that Helbrecht fell short . We know that the Black Templars wont give up and that what makes them so damn good. Ya'll gonna put more respekt on the Necron name we're coming for whats ours..
The Day Games Workshop finally release proper Legion/chapter upgrade kits is the day that will do more good than anything given/released within the hobby. I am still so very annoyed over Forge World's constant silence and the death of so many amazing upgrade kits, I do hope we'll see some kits return in plastic and as mentioned, GW finally giving in to the community's greatest wish. Primaris diversity and not just single "Holy monks" models, we need upgrades for all of the Chapters, all of the Guard legions, plus Xenos and Heretic kits alike. More than ever before.
I've played Templars for almost two decades now, and happily bought as many chapter upgrade sprues as possible during that time. I was very surprised they didn't get Primaris upgrades like some of the other chapters did
@@celticfox Well. The Primaris upgrades are utter garbage at this stage of the hobby, 1-2 helmets and minor badges of honour is really awful. The old Templar sprue had character and tons of flavor to upgrade unites with. Same goes for the FW HH range, at best 10+ upgrade kits deals. Thus far GW is in fact doing a horrendous in the sense of legion diversity. Paying extremely overpriced kits is nt helping nor is it justified or comsumer friendly .. I mean GW never has been that really, although i would love to see GW throw the bone in the sense of better upgrade kits.
@@GruwskiTheDogski no worries, mate! Seeing the exceptional artwork for the Templars in the new rulebook (go and check it out if you haven't seen it!) I'm a bit more hopeful for the future. I had to run my boys as Blood Angels just to have a competitive force a few times. These new Bladeguard Veterans were MADE to be Templars! Let the new codex come out, new units get boxes, and I would bet my bottom dollar that GW has plans in the works for new Chapter customization kits.
@@celticfox That they were! The Blade Guard 110% fit the Crusaders of Dorn. ;) However we do need more diveristy in the sense of unique legions/chapters, the Sons of Dorn is in fact one choice chapter, same goes for the Angels of the Blood, The Wolves and the Knights of the Rock. They all need more models and flavor, since it only helps enrich the entire range if you ask me. Although checking the reveal of the new codex.. Do you think we might get Veterans rather than "Upgraded bolter" unites? I hope we get more Veteran options / choices.

I'm not surprised Helbrecht lost to Imotekh. Helbrecht was always a lesser High Marshall compared to his predecessors. He believes himself to be a Sigismund, but he's barely even a Koorland.
Haha but according to the fluff yuu can't become a Marshall let alone Alpha Dog without beating all the others in single combat. So he's not going to be a puss.
Spoken like someone who doesn't know Black Templars or Helbrecht very much. I find that a very common theme here. He killed a Daemon Prince with a combat knife ffs!
Much as I love the Black Templars, they are not invulnerable and every bit as fallible as any mortal. Helbrecht was more of a commander/admiral than say, a great warrior like Sigismund or Lysander. Great story!
I actually think that Calgar was pretty tough on Uriel Ventris for breaking the rules of the Codex. Maybe not a bravado as Hellbrecht but still. He forced him on a death oath and stripped him of his ultramarine heraldy. Very humiliating for any astartes
Given how many Black Templars there possibly are, when presented with the Primaris and asked whether their Chapter was understrength and in need of reinforcements, High Marshall Helbrecht actually said "Yes, yes we are" with a straight face. I like to think that, decades later, he's still a bit surprised not to have had the Emperor chuck a thunderbolt at him for such a massive fib! Also, I'm hopeful that we'll get more new BT lore now that Psychic Awakening: Pariah has them (with the SoB) at the forefront of the battle against the Necrons and their "Silence" because faith can overcome it's effect.
No way at all would a Space Marine come close to a Necron Lord. Going on just lore it would be a shame if Necron Lords were just killed by Space Marines.
Not to mention it being THE Necron lord. I mean, Imotekh was such a tactical mastermind, the Orks were made to "Outsmart" him, just because of how wild and reckless they are. An entire race was made, to stop this guy. Helbrecht is very lucky Imotekh was amused by his anger, otherwise we'd have a new high marshall, lol.
A really good piece of lore, in that it's not only a rare example of Space Marines losing, but losing on every level. Imotehk defeats Helbrecht as a tactician, as a leader, and as a warrior - And even out-sasses him, replying vainglorious threats with cold truths. Of course, the worst victory of all is that, even if Helbrecht achieves victory another day, it won't change the fact that the only reason he still lives is because a hated xeno willed it - The leader of the Black Templars chapter owes him his life.
Yeah, that is because Imotekh noticed that he was extremely close to loose his head. He respected that achievement from a guy who didn't even start the fight fresh. Primarch Helbrecht with his new Powersword made from the parts of his Primarchs sword, won't lose power or break. 🗡️ When they meet again.
Dont think like that cause if he's wuss what does that make the loser then? U manly man of manlyness of all men. aint the point of black templars is that they are the exemplars of the merciless then its best when a true challenge proves it i want to see them rise to the challange to reach greater heights. They prevail in the emperors name.
The final battle is always still to come, if it actually came then the people at the Black library and Games Workshop would make less money from milking the hype.
Such a glorious story. Helbrecht needs to cross the Rubicon and swear a new Crusade straight into the heart of the Pariah. Or finally END the war on Armageddon?
Black Templars all the way, but Necron Overlords are truly superior to any adeptus astartes in terms of strenth power thoughness and eventually deadlyness. To see if Mankind as it is now, could handle a war against a united necron empire i doubt.
The fight was unfair as everything was already in Imotekh's favour, so taking everything into account the fact that Helbrecht managed to do as well as he did is no small feat. He went into a one sided fight and still managed to hold his own for a while, and could even have won had his sword not been deactivated.
Well, no. He standed that long against the Imotekh only because of mercy, from the soulless mashine, whom use his true power only once. And, fun fact, Imotekh isn't even a fighter, he is a strategist, after all. So, yeah. *He teached the one man what is true Order, Unity and Obedience. Just like long time ago.*
Well Helbrecht is extremely upgraded now. This sword wouldn't break nor lose power. He was "only" a marshall and already badly wounded. Imotekh ran like a little girl when Helbrecht met him last and annihilated Imotekh's precious ship. Well, yes...
3 years late, but people don't seem to understand the issues that some people have with this fight. It's a question of writing. If the necrons are so scary, if Imhotek is so powerful, then why is the only way they win, by writer's-say-so? "Writers-say-so" is an uncommon term, for a far too common fault. When a certain character needs to win a fight, but the writers don't want the other character to appear weak, they have the first one win, because they need to. For an in-lore example, Sigismund V abaddon. Siggy bested abby multiple times, so much that any normal character would have died at multiple points, but abby didn't. The question now comes down to "why". Did abby train so hard, work for his power and skills, and skillfully bests siggys moves? Or is he a trash fighter that only survived because the setting needs a leader for chaos? "Writers-say-so" says that, abby wins because he needs to win, and not because he earned it, unlike sigismund, who earned the victory, but was denied because, writers-say-so. The excuse of the chaos gods all staring at abby to grant him their blessings, is just that, an excuse. If those blessings did anything, they should have made him a more competent fighter, but they didn't, they just stopped him from losing the fight that he lost. The Storm lord duel has the exact same issue. From the writing it is clear who the superior fighter is, Helbrecht is losing, not because he is an inferior warrior, but because imhotek is abusing the necron living metal gimmick. That's fine, it's wonderful actually, because it's being presented as a tool. The problem arises when Helbrecht is going for that last strike. Imhotek is saved by a flash of light that luckily saves him from decapitation. That's pathetic. They should have written imhotek as faster, stronger, and more skillful. He should have been predicting Helbrecht's attacks, but the High marshal should have kept pushing through, wasting his efforts on forward assaults, giving into rage, instead of stepping back, gathering his thoughts, and proceeding forward smartly. It would have been a mirror to the battle itself and a lesson for the entire chapter to learn. Instead, the necron wins because a flash of light shuts down the power sword. That makes imhotek look weak, because he couldn't parry and riposte such an over-committed, blatant, telegraphed attack? What if the flash didn't shut down the power field? What if the sword had a temporary back-up? What is Helbracht was an instant faster? What if the power field lingered just another millisecond? Imhotek would have lost. That's the problem. If you want these established, competent, skillful characters to lose, give them a superior foe, and not one that "has to win". Duels in stories like this live and die on the characterization. I'm not saying Imhotek is a poor character, far from it. I'm saying he wasn't presented as a character that could legitimately fight, let alone defeat, Helbrecht. Imhotek's victory feels unearned here, and that's the main problem. Have Helbrecht lose, as long as there's a legitimate reason for it. Have him lose to a superior strategist, a calmer mind, somebody who presses his advantage while Helbrecht is failing his own. Not to an immortal warrior who just doesn't take damage, and even then barely survives only because Helbrecht's own sword malfunctions.
Sigismund is one of my very favourite characters in the lore, yet I could never get that excited about the Templars in general, despite aesthetically being amongst my top too. Don't get me wrong, I still like them, but not as much as some other chapters, they just feel a bit one dimensional at times (I guess that's to be expected too). I really enjoyed Helsreach though, but honestly, Grimaldus feels like a bit of an odball amongst the Templars to me. Maybe I'm wrong.
Great Reading, Thank you! I didn't read this short story, does he really address Helbrecht in this story as High-Marshall? Back when i first read the fluff of Schroedinger VII with the 5th Edition Necron Codex, Helbrecht was only a Marshall (Captain) at this duel... If GW changed it, there would be a lot of lost charakterdevelopment on him. (just my opinion)
When I read the title I thought of the Librarians of the White Scars and was like "*The* Storm Lord? But which one exactly?". But those guys are called Stromseers not Storm Lords. Eh, close enough.
"You are a relic of a dead empire that has no right to exist"
"I find that amusing, coming from one such as you"

It's stated that Helbrecht Powersword is built on the parts from Dorn's own. That wasn't this blade, right? It feels wrong imo.
Do you know what year this story was written? Was it from an edition in which the Necrons were the big bad for the edition?
Was this Imotekh's introduction into the lore?
Or at least the edition he was created?
He has the arrogance of a Custodes. he was selected for the wrong duty.
""WAAAAAAAHHHH!!!""
I'd never heard of this story and I always wondered why the fight wasn't a book. Thanks! What's the story where they recover the standard?
Its part of a campaign done via white dwarf originally. Then turned into a black library book
Fantastic as always. I love these stories and lore my sons and I are new to 40k
And are completely addicted to this universe and it's the Guys like your lore chaps, and the great Batreps, that have given us the thirst for more! Thanks for talking and taking the time to make these WolfLord.
Loving BT week. Thanks for this
Very cool story.
For some of the best, most historically accurate (Insofar as can be gleaned from old writings from the 900s-1600s that spoke of knights, and their mannerisms/attitudes.) as far as giving a proper representation of knights... and just amazingly good books:

Black templars week, day two. So far, all Templars are dying or getting fucked up in duels. Well, nice
space marines chapter XD
When all you do is purge the enemies of mankind 24/7, you lose a couple dudes.
remember Dorns suicide attack on the iron cage, fuelled by hate, rage and pure bloody minded stubbornness?
Thats how the templars take after their gene daddy.
@@manchannel7003 indeed
You know, I feel like the massed numbers of the necrons and the high casualties they can inflict even on armored opponents should make the astartes, what with their numbers of like, 5000 to a chapter uniquely unequipped to fight them. Are the casualties described in this story just like, a few dozen? I am never sure how the astartes with their famously difficult and slow replacement rate are able to sustain large wars of attrition like this.
Guardsmen would be more suited to fight necrons with their en massed fighting and easier to replenish supplies/men.
I think imotekh should win every time. Being the 1st now 2en of all the necrons should make you a strong fighter.
So.. a month or so and we get a Trazyn story and maybe a new trio of Necrons for 9th
Glad to be here on the first of (I hope) many Chapter weeks to come.
Imotek is a beast and it is no slight that Helbrecht fell short . We know that the Black Templars wont give up and that what makes them so damn good. Ya'll gonna put more respekt on the Necron name we're coming for whats ours..
I,Cato Sicarius, think Helbrecht is tough but not tough enough for me for I, am Cato Sicarius.
Helbrecht would hand your ass to you blindfolded Cato
Why did I read this in the tts voice.......
The Blade Guard 110% fit the Crusaders of Dorn. ;)
However we do need more diveristy in the sense of unique legions/chapters, the Sons of Dorn is in fact one choice chapter, same goes for the Angels of the Blood, The Wolves and the Knights of the Rock.
They all need more models and flavor, since it only helps enrich the entire range if you ask me.
Although checking the reveal of the new codex..
Do you think we might get Veterans rather than "Upgraded bolter" unites? I hope we get more Veteran options / choices.
@@GruwskiTheDogski they just need to let us take Crusader Squads that have Intercessors included too. It would at least be a step into a direction where not *all* of our units are OG Marines. My hope is currently holding out for a Primaris Emperor's Champion!
Are we sure it was necrons that took it or are the blood ravens nearby?
Does it matter? It belongs in a museum/reliquary.
"Hippity, hoppity. Your fist is now their property."
Trazyn the infinite makes the blood ravens look like honest law abiding space marines
I didn't know him that well, only knew him first in art , then TTS , then a great view in Helsreach . A voice made harsh with a thousand battle cries made on a thousand world's I really like him as a leader overall . Oh boy I hope you cover Gremaldes ! But no matter what that for the top tier content.
Didn't Grimaldus yell/bitch slap someone back to life?
Sat here painting and listening to your BT videos. I really enjoyed this one; can't say I know much about the BT so these videos are great.
is it really necessary that you always say that we should read the books by ourselves, support gw and spoilerwarning every time you start a video?
But it does not ruin your great vids, salute from a fan!
I get knocked down, but I get up again
Xenos never gonna keep me down
I don’t think this story could’ve gone any other way. We needed to see the high martial fall. Even if it’s just so we can watch him get back up.
I'm not surprised Helbrecht lost to Imotekh. Helbrecht was always a lesser High Marshall compared to his predecessors. He believes himself to be a Sigismund, but he's barely even a Koorland.
Savage af
Except that he was not High Marshall during this period. His later victory over Imotekh proves his worth.
He was always more of a commander instead of a warrior. Besides, i'll be boring if every one as a TACTICAL GENIUS or melee-powerhouse
Son of Russ, I think Helbrecht should lose precisely as many fights as you think Logan Grimnar should.
Send in Grimaldus! he would just angry him to oblivion
Grimaldus
Grimaldus
Grimaldus
Much as I love the Black Templars, they are not invulnerable and every bit as fallible as any mortal. Helbrecht was more of a commander/admiral than say, a great warrior like Sigismund or Lysander. Great story!
Honour to the Black Templars from the Vlka fenryka
Helbrecht is going to turn into the Doom Slayer
I actually think that Calgar was pretty tough on Uriel Ventris for breaking the rules of the Codex. Maybe not a bravado as Hellbrecht but still. He forced him on a death oath and stripped him of his ultramarine heraldy. Very humiliating for any astartes
There are only a few of Astartes more badass than Grimaldus, Helbrecht is one of those
Sigismund
@@chipman1589 if Helbrecht had half the skill of Sigismund he might of won
Mephiston.
@@Aristaios it's a damn shame too. He should've won, that emp shit was cheating. We need vulcan to bring down the ban hammer on this hacker
Hero character or not, you don't win every battle. You survive them.
Rho, you always bring us the very best violence!
How many were lost on Cadia and what definition is being used for being under strength? 😉
Helbrecht is very lucky Imotekh was amused by his anger, otherwise we'd have a new high marshall, lol.
thats a very sister looking brother there in that 1st pic
we sure they are still just recruiting men into the eternal crusade?
Dorn's angry boys!
I'd love to hear you work with 40k theories someday
Hell yes!
Maybe a video on the deeper reasoning for taunting the Templars in the future.
Emotekh : how such a mortal being harnessed such rage and anger?
When they meet again.
Well actually Imohteck (or whatever) lost in terms of martial skill he had to use his space robot magic to avoid death. Like a wuss
That picture is awesome.
What kind of armor is the Black Templar Astartes wearing in that first picture? That thing is badass!
That Templar in the image has hips for days.
Imotekh got lucky Helbrecht takes the series in game 6.

Hellbrecht is basically a new Sigismund, but he is not an ultimate fighter, he is more tactician etc.
Hahahahaha, I love hearing space marines being humiliated...
The Indomitus box should have been black templars and helbrecht v imotek and his dynasty
"WAAAAH" - High Marshall Helbrecht of the Black Templars

Sons of Dorn *HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*
*Mr. Torgue guitar riff*
No pity no remorse no fear
I can barely contain my elation!
Take it he wasn’t using the Sword of the High Marshals...
He was only a firstborn marshall in this fight.
Destroy all Traitors!
Unless the Emperor redeems them.
Black Templars appear to be best at losing and dying.
To be fair look who they fought, a juiced up Abbadon in his prime vs an ancient Sigismund and the king of self healing immortal zombie robots
He's just like Dorn now.
Zz Zzzz NO
Great Reading, Thank you!
I think he was just a marshal at this time... but its not important I think. He will became the hero he is after that situation.
He's had several really big power ups since this fight.
Black Templars Rock!
When I read the title I thought of the Librarians of the White Scars and was like "*The* Storm Lord? But which one exactly?". But those guys are called Stromseers not Storm Lords. Eh, close enough.
