The W124 is probably the pinnacle of heir reliability and engineering. There was a study done a few years ago to see how much a similarly engineered and R&D E Class would be. It would stat at €70,000 new.
The truth is that the customers dont want that reliable cars. I dont know if the marketing made them like that or the marketing recognised customers needs.

And those who are willing to pay the premium for it, also have the means to buy a newer, nicer generation car every few years. So they give up the old cars, no matter how reliable they are.
Mercedes Benz should definitely reward this guy with a new car for taking care and promoting Benz all these years. It would not cost much for Benz to do that.
Mercedes should have just helped him to revamp the car and make it look fresh… clean the seats, give it a new pair of headlights and brake lights, new tyres new interior and repair or change what’s needed.. and let it live again and again

I was to Bamako, Mali where every other taxi is a yellow W124 Diesel Mercedes. These cars were also popular as personal transportation. I asked my taxi driver why there were so many of these old Mercs still around. He said it’s the only car that’s tough enough for Africa where only a limited number of roads are paved. That was 11 years ago, I kept in touch with him and he still drives the same car.

Watching this while sitting in my 95 W140, these 90s and 80s tanks are indestructible and made to last a lifetime with the best engineering available at the time with no expenses spared. Nothing beats an old Merc.
@@enfantterrible4868 there is no rust issue with the W140 as far as I've seen. The only place that seems to be common in high salt areas is around the lock for the boot. I've never seen a rusty W140 personally, mostly because I'm in Australia now but not in the UK either. The W220 that came after the W140 had serious corrosion problems though!
It has 1.5mil km... IN ALBANIA When it was exported to Slovenia it has 300k, when it was exported from Slovenia after 8 years it has only 120k, and it was driven for another four years in Croatia. Than it was exported into Albania with 150kkm, and than another 1.3mil.

Not just to Albania but other countries too! W124 still a reasonable and durable mercedes here in indonesia. They survived the tropic season for more than 2 decades with relatively minimum problems
i also got this car from my late grandmother , i've been keeping it for 20 years now. mileage still on 190,000 KM. every 6 months im doing medical checkup for this car , normal services almost nothing broken or need to change every 6 years , except tyre and battery kaput every 3-4 years.
Old cars had really good build quality, today's generation most of the cars won't be able to stand in front of this car. Respect for the car and the person's hardwork.

W123 & W124 diesel are much sought after by taxi operators due to its engine durability & reliability. The 240D & 300D (W123) are still used as taxi here in Malaysia together with the 250D (W124).
Albania has not only a lot of Mercedes passenger cars, but a lot of old Mercedes buses as well. Many city buses are directly bought used from German public transport companies. I've ridden buses from VBB Berlin and MVV Munich in Tirana and RMV Hanau bus in Durres. They don't even bother removing the German city's ÖPNV map and “riding without a ticket will be fined 60 €” warning in the buses.
Renault makes their engines now. Turkey makes their leather seats. Alot of other parts are made internationally. This car in the video is made 100% in Germany 🇩🇪

There aren't as many mercedes cars these days as once were in Albania... However these cars were very popular in the 90's and simply very reliable , and not expensive to repair either. Also to mention they are fun to drive, very comfortable and lot of space. Great family car. There are farmers in Albania using these old Mercedes as tractors :)
Yes, that's correct. Today in Albania you can spot every brand and every kind of car, from Premium saloon to small city cars, through MPVs and SUVs. There are German cars of course, but also Japanese, french, korean, italian cars...Not only Mercedes. In Albania are imported every day dozens of cars from Western Europe, not only Mercedes, it is impossible to import only Mercedes. Have been twice in Albania, in 2015 and in 2019. In 2015 I saw several Mercedes but less than I expected, in 2019 in my opinion the percentage of Mercedes decreased more. It is a legend that in Albania there are only Mercedes. You could spot only Mercedes in Albania in the 90's and in the early 2000, not today.

I was at the passenger seat and asked why the counter had only around 2000 km for such an old taxi ( 30 years old ). The taxi driver told me why ... The car was 1,000,200 km. I gave him a good tip ! (I remember the passenger seat was the oldest and most destroyed and pitiful one I ' ve seen in my life and yes , it was very uncomfortable to be sitting on it ). Where was it ? Africa.

While Mercedes-Benz still makes pretty good cares they are not even close to what it used to be. This Mercedes was truly the best care in the world, it was comfortable as a Mercedes and reliable as a Toyota.
I owned and drove a couple different 300sd around 1980 vintage. Even 400,000 MI freezing cold started instantly. The safe Hulk like structure knowing you're not going to ever die in that car is a big deal I've seen some pretty bad wrecks. Just a few minor little adjustments and that car would spend its tires surprising people going over the mountain pass at 70 or more. I still have to say best car ever produced. Best ride and just incredible reliability 🙏🙏
I was in a citroen taxi in the canaries - a passenger version of the Expert - wasn't hugely old - it had 1.2 mil k's on the clock so I doubt this is that rare for taxis, especially ones that are 2 drivered.

I had a W124 1987 300D Turbo and put over 488K miles on it. The only reason I got rid of it was because my wife wanted a new car. It was built like a tank. I still have a W123 300CD Turbodiesel which has a better design look.
In all honesty I've thought when the day comes, replacing my wife's sorento with an older MBZ E200/300 with the diesel engine. I have a Sprinter with the 4-cyl diesel, do all my own work, and the thing is a beast. Of course, it is an older model built in Germany. I owned a 2009 E350 a while back, but the 80s and 90s MBZ sedans are just unbeatable.
Why the Mercedes is so famous in Alabania is because roads were in terrible condition when the market opened after communism fell. When u combine that with the fact that Albania is a very mountanious country , I think the only logical conclusion was to get a Mercedes. Its suspension technology was miles ahead of the competition. It was the king of comfort. (Audi was completeley outclassed by mercedes back then in terms of driving comfort & cornering, while BMW had stiffer suspension since it geared more towards driving enthusiasts)

Durres isn't the main tourist destination. It is an old and full of culture city but, it was destroyed by building abusage (all Albania actually, but Durres is the worst). The best tourist destination is Vlora county.
No its not. There's not much to see and do in Vlora apart from beaches. Golem, Lalez and Rodon has a lot nicer beaches than Vlora. The best tourist places to visit are the Albanian Alps. There is nothing comparable to that yet. Unless Vlora develops public transport, trains and hotelier infrastructure it will remain non competitive to neighboring countries or even to central Albanian coasts which still make up for 60% of summer tourism income and has better infrastructure.

We in Bosnia drive also these kinda Mercedes not as a taxi so much but just private. But he most common cars in Bosnia are VW golf 1-2-3-4-5

Why the Mercedes is so famous in Alabania is because roads were in terrible condition when the market opened after communism fell. When u combine that with the fact that Albania is a very mountanious country , I think the only logical conclusion was to get a Mercedes. Its suspension technology was miles ahead of the competition. It was the king of comfort. (Audi was completeley outclassed by mercedes back then in terms of driving comfort & cornering, while BMW had stiffer suspension since it geared more towards driving enthusiasts)

W123 W124 and any gen of E class till 2017 are great cars old S klasse(W116&W126)are equally reliable

No its not. There's not much to see and do in Vlora apart from beaches. Golem, Lalez and Rodon has a lot nicer beaches than Vlora. The best tourist places to visit are the Albanian Alps. There is nothing comparable to that yet. Unless Vlora develops public transport, trains and hotelier infrastructure it will remain non competitive to neighboring countries or even to central Albanian coasts which still make up for 60% of summer tourism income and has better infrastructure.
