History proved that Dean Martin had more talent than Jerry Lewis especially when it came to comedy, dramatic roles and success on television. When the team split in 1956 the so-called critics had predicted Martin's show business career would be over with in a year. Boy were they wrong.

Nan Dowden I think that was probably a large part of his popularity (apart from his amazing talent of course). There was never any big star ‘don’t you know who I am’ air about Dean. Grew up in Youngstown about an hour away. He was idolized in my house.
My family always told me I resembled him. Then I started to watch his old stuff w parents. Found out how much stuff was so close.
People said I looked like him.
His last name is Crocetti. (Cro chet tee) Mine is Carchedi (car ched dee)
Family from the same part of Italy. They Came over to the area in the same year his parents did.
My work history involves steel mills like his family.
    Obvious proud American Italian Catholics.
Born a week apart in June ( not year obviously)
Anyway, when is was younger I was in sales and working door to door in Steubenville, a nice ol Italian couple answered the door. I got to talking to them. Right off the rip the Mrs told me I looked like Dean. She said what’s your name. ( at this time I didn’t know his real last name). I said Tommy Carchedi. She about shit a brick. She said your a decent of his!!! Then I said it slower a few times......
anyway, sorry to bore you. That’s my story. But this cat is the coolest in history. And No offense to the Sinatra lovers( love him too) but Deanos voice blows him away.

When I was a child, the only thing I knew about Dean was that he sang "That's Amoré" and "Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime." Maybe saw a couple of his variety show episodes, especially the Christmas ones. But I never really appreciated him or his talent. Now, at 56 years old, I think he was DEFINITELY one of the coolest cats ever! I binge watch (and listen to) everything of his I can find. I am totally hooked on his Celebrity Roasts and the western movies he starred in!
To me, he and Sammy Davis Jr. were the most talented gentlemen of that era and I can't get enough of either of them 💕!

Fenway Park I think you’re getting your films mixed up, Jerry Lewis was never in Rio Bravo, Dean starred in that with John Wayne and Angie Dickinson. It was made in 1959, three years after he broke up with Jerry. I think the film you may be thinking of was Pardners , their penultimate movie they made together just before they split up in 1956.

BunnyGalore And nor would he have had such a long and successful career. Contrary to many peoples belief, it wasn’t alcohol that killed Dean, he actually died of emphysema (caused by a lifetime of heavy smoking), exacerbated by his broken heart over Dean Paul’s tragic death.

BunnyBear Dean Martin was a heavy smoker and died of emphysema which many actors from that era died from cancer caused from heavy smoking or least brought on cancer or emphysema. Legendary actor Humphrey Bogart a 4 pack a day smoker and heavy drinker died from esophageal cancer due to his habits, John Wayne’ s lung cancer he was diagnosed with in 1964 due his 3-5 pack a day habit but lived until 1979 when died of stomach cancer. Gary Cooper and others to all smoked heavily and it took its toll as did on Dean Martin.

To me Dean Martin was the best, better than Frank Sinatra. His voice was one of a kind, smooth and relaxing. Even when Frank Sinatra sung some songs you can see he was straining is voice. With Dean Martin every song he sung was so relaxed.

    • @TheRelger

Michael Hastie , Dino was a natural. Frank was a professional.
Dean didn’t have to work to become a good singer.
Frank worked very hard at it.
Frank was giving Deana, Deans daughter, some singing pointers.
She asked “is that what daddy does”
Frank said “Dean doesn’t know he’s supposed to do that. He just does it.
      He’s a natural.

Frank, from what I've heard, was a much more tortured soul. Mental illness, booze, women, run ins with the law... It all made him kind of edgy and restless. Dean was way more relaxed, more at peace. A good fire and ice combo.

Dean couldn't have been as great as he was in partnership with Jerry Lewis. It's just a shame that it had to end with the acrimony. Jerry remained bitter until he died. His book 'Dean and me' tried to portray Dean as a friendless, sad old man. Not nice from a person who owed his career to Dean's brilliance as a partner.

I was reading an article years ago and someone was quoted as saying that, 'Dean Martin literally didn't give a fuck'.

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 5 лет назад

Sloppify Well, I don’t know... he certainly always tried to give that impression and his whole stage act was built around his supposed lackadaisical ‘couldn’t-care-less’ attitude. But there are a few times in some interviews where he let the mask slip to inadvertently reveal much deeper feelings. I just feel that deep down Dean DID care about some things a whole lot more than he usually let on. It’s said that he was bullied in school because of his bad English (he apparently only spoke Italian at home and didn’t learn to speak English at all until he went to school and so of course had a very heavy Italian accent, something which he later admitted that he was always very self-conscious about; “when Jerry and I used to go to parties, I didn’t speak English very good so I used to keep my mouth shut, and because of that people thought I was stuck-up and snobbish”) As many who were bullied as a child will know, that often does make you retreat into yourself and learn not to let anyone get close enough to hurt you again. So maybe that was possibly the true reason for his also being known as a very private, introspective man.
