Months of painful training, testing and preparation culminated in a 10 minute burn for Thomas van Tonder on Tuesday 17 November, 2020. Find out more about his challenge right here: win.gs/RisingWithTheSun
Pretty nifty solution to hoist up the other end as well. I remember that Magnus Mitbo, who attempted a long rope climb once, mentioned that the weight of the rope made it almost impossible to lock your feet properly once you progress up.
@@jindrichhermann7937 definitely a mechanical advantage. It's kinda cheating in my mind. At least he holds the record for minimal static weight on the rope for that length... Anyways very impressive.
Beddes as he is known in the world of professional tree climbing didn't lift up the rope underneath, him he had a system where he was able to unclip the rope underneath and keep climbing LEGEND
When I was in highschool I could have smashed this record. Did countless consecutive rope climbs with only my hands. Now I'm a blob that can barely lift my body weight 😂
I was the same in highschool too, could out climb everybody hand over hand. Now I'm a 69 year old 175 lb diesel mechanic & I can still do it. I wonder if there's a seniors for this!
love how the white guy is not wearing a mask, but the black guy is. Good job Red bull! (sarcasm) picture of white south Africans not giving a crap about anyone who isn't white.
Still cool, but he's cheating though. The hard thing about climbing a long rope is the weight of the rope below you, the higher you go, the heavier it gets, the harder it gets. They are hoisting up the row below him, so it doesn't matter if he's at ground level or 80 meters up, he only has a few meters of rope below him.
@@MegaWernich the rope you are talking about ist not the rope he is talking about. They are pulling up the thick rope under him,so it is easier for him to lock his feet.
@@MegaWernich nah the safety feature is the harness thats also attached if he falls. The large rope is being pulled up as well as it is virtually impossible for him to continue that technique and lock his feet in with the weight of all that rope below, so they pull it up so he can continue that technique. So yeah, kind of not a legit climb like above said. Still highly impressive you must admit!
Nothing to lose here. This just isn't extreme. If somebody with the means wants to string a rope up for me to climb I will train to do it with all these safety precautions that almost eliminate any possibility of danger. Check out Alex Honnold if you want to see extreme accomplishments and real peril.
@@jasonpatrickries it is extreme in the speed in which he covers the first 50m aka World Record time. His stamina for the next 50 is also extreme, as no one has ever done it before on a vertical hanging rope, including AH. Who made the agenda 'something to lose'? He fulfilled his agenda, not yours.

Wow
There are some towers near where I live that are not in use, I wish I could buy the place and turn it into a playground for adults
I'm learning to skydive and when I'm able I hope to base jump those towers
Pretty nifty solution to hoist up the other end as well. I remember that Magnus Mitbo, who attempted a long rope climb once, mentioned that the weight of the rope made it almost impossible to lock your feet properly once you progress up.
I was searching for that.
With that preparation magnus would go for 200m 😂
I would think it should help keep it from spinning as well.
I feel like that is cheating
@@jindrichhermann7937 definitely a mechanical advantage. It's kinda cheating in my mind. At least he holds the record for minimal static weight on the rope for that length... Anyways very impressive.
Magnus would crush this set up, no question.
These cooling towers are a piece of art
They are just ads
@@theplayah442 No matter what they are... They look awesome.
Vodacom art hahahahha
Hard Work Paid Off
I can't believe he *pulled* that off.
SA needed this , great stuff boet
Fantastic work and edit. South Africa is a wonderful place lucky man!
After drinking the RedBull at the top I thought he was gonna jump...😀
And fly.
I thought the same thing!
That's awesome, I visited that spot once during travel and it is no joke
How are you doing today?
Such an awesome and inspiring video!
That was amazing! Lots of training and works pays off well done!
I would love to know the times for each ten-meter interval! Is there somewhere I can obtain that information for research purposes? Amazing job!
You have a rare gift, no good English word for it, it's called "vasbyt"... And you surely CAN. Well done 👍🏻
What language is this?
Thomas has got this I have faith, he will smash this record 💥💥😎💥💥
That's the spirit!
@@redbull 😁❤️
damn such a wonderful story full of dedication and fierce strength
What an achievement . Two thumbs WAY UP!
Use the speed climbing harness next time! 😉
Reaching higher altitudes by climbing up the rope in the continual effort is terrific.
The climber do very hard work🤗🤗👌👍
This is crazy. Way to go man
Making SA proud bruh, well done bugger
1:55 well... Hold my Magnus Midtbø
Fezzik climbed the cliffs of insanity carrying 3 people.... the fact that this guy thinks he is breaking a world record is inconceivable.
Your comment was spittin-coffee funny!
That makes me happy, I was unsure if anyone would recall that classic film!
Congrats!!!
Awesome so Saffa proud
Respect for trying to break a record that's so difficult
My bru should’ve bungeed off there to sign off the Lekker win for SA🍻💪 🔥
Wow that’s crazy
Masha'allah, this channel is fairy tale.
Congrats dude, that’s nuts
Proud of
I guess you are also from south africa like myself💪☀️

thats impressive!!!
At first I thought it was just about speed, but wow it's much more impressive than that
Thank god he is wearing a helmet lol
This guy is crazy
Well, that mandatory sip of Red Bull in every video ...
I really want to ask why? But why not, it’s your world bud I’m just living in it, congrats on the hard work!
What a badass
Tree climbing legend Bernd Strasser did a 100 meter climb in under 5 min in a TV show!!!
Beddes as he is known in the world of professional tree climbing didn't lift up the rope underneath, him he had a system where he was able to unclip the rope underneath and keep climbing
LEGEND
Where is the footage..it has to be tested and proven?
Props. Nobody doing what I’m doing either. Nice pull.
Very nice video
Need to get Magnus to try!
red bull gives you wings bro if anything diabetes or a heart attack
I find it hilarious that the athletes they sponsor would never actually put that crap in their own bodys.
I think this isn’t the limit this guy can achieve !
We'll just have to wait and see the next record 😉
Mark Chisholm (arborist climbing champion) it seems like there is a new challenge for you.
Red Bull POWER 🙂ٍ 👍
💯🥂🥂
How are you doing bro?
Wow
Fajne Red Bull

When I was in highschool I could have smashed this record. Did countless consecutive rope climbs with only my hands.
Now I'm a blob that can barely lift my body weight 😂
Hahaha I thought the same thing. My upper body strength was like no other. I would club ropes all day with only my arms and no legs at all.
High school ropes are usually less than 8m. But yeah would have been fun to try in our prime.
I was the same in highschool too, could out climb everybody hand over hand. Now I'm a 69 year old 175 lb diesel mechanic & I can still do it. I wonder if there's a seniors for this!
GREAT 👍👍👍💪

Did you ask for advice from Ross Edgley? He might have had good ones to share. 😉
Cezary? 🤔
Who in the he’ll thinks of this stuff lol I want that job to come up with crazy Red Bull stunts !!! Where do I apply
🔥🔥🔥
three
I wanna know how many pistol squats he did on the rope exactly, Thomas if you ever find this comment, let me know.
I don't even know how many I did. ;) enough lol
Site Manager is so lovely 🐱😍🤗
Does somebody noticed that he sounds like Schwarzenegger? 7:48
4:00 Lawrence What¿? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great climb , now if you want a real challenge walk from Soweto to Jo- Berg and make it out alive !
What could that helmet do for him at this point?
More advertising money?

kind of cheatin?! 90M Rope is heavy
Do it without hoist u cheater can put safty net under u no excuses
