I am so sad to read online that this young tenor, Nathan Ward, took his life a couple of years after this performance. My condolences to those who loved him.
How wonderful to have discovered this video. The Serenade has for many years been one of my absolute favorite pieces of music. Thank you to the tenor for having his music memorized......he did a beautiful sensitive job. Bravi!!!
Many thanks Mr Brottman and Mr. Ward. I was raised on the recordings of Dennis Brain,Tuckwell, Pears and Britten. The horn opening has always brought terror to my body. That Britten wrote it for the greatest horn player of the 20th cent. can not make it an easy challenge. It seems to me that even Brain made it sound almost impossible. You both did well, and good luck to you both.
This is a very extraordinary piece of music and it makes extraordinary demands on the performers. The players and the singer here are wonderfully good - the tenor superb throughout and the horn player terrific in the introduction. How these people reach such a superb level of performance is simply a mystery to a layman like myself.
That's very kind, thank you David! It really is a fantastic piece of music. We just practice, listen, do our best... and we have great teachers, that helps!
Great playing of audibly difficult, but paradoxically calming, music. Equally admirable diction, pitch, sensibility, love the phrasing!
This recording is such a gift 🧡

Thank you so much Bill! It's certainly an incredible piece, I'm very glad we could share it with you.
Superb.
Bravo Nathan Ward! He sounds wonderful!

BRAVO!
Awesome performance! ... small detail ...Ummm what horn is that? Embarrassed to admit I don't recognize it
Hey thanks Peter! My horn is a mutt - it's a Conn 6D (which is a Schmidt wrap) from 1924, with a leadpipe made by Ron Pinc and a bell from Karl Hill.
magistral
Nice!
what orchestra is this?
Hey Ben, it was an ad hoc orchestra made of northwestern university students
Fシングル…いや、シュミットモデルか…!?
Good eyes! Yes, it is a Schmidt model :)
