Great video, just ran across this. Thank you.
I'm teaching my teenage daughter, and need all the help I can get. The main "take away" from this video (for us), is the reinforcement of hand placement. The position of both thumbs. Not so much the reload factor (as that's several step past where we're at) but the stable holding of the pistol.
    Good stuff folks, thank you.

    Two things...
Her eyes only leave the target after the new mag has cleared the holster and she reacquires the target as soon as it's seated. And...
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Practicing slow, then letting speed enter the equation, as muscle memory makes for increasingly fast responses without the possibility of fumbling, because you're not TRYING to go fast...
You just are fast. Thank you both for this demonstration.

Smooth work Mandy. Me being old school I never trained using the slingshot except in some malfunctions. I used the slide lock/release to reload an empty gun. Smooth and fast. Like poetry in motion.
When our agency went to the Sig 226 9mm in the early 90's we had some deputies that had trouble using their thumb on the slide release. This was mostly females or older deputies with arthritic joints. They would grasp the slide and slingshot it okay.
LAV, Another fine 1911 mainly info, but will work on most any pistol. KAHL firearms recommends using the slide release instead of the slingshot.

Great to see women shooters! Great way to spend quality time with mate & family. Outdoors having fun! No indoor ranges! Nothing like being outside shooting & bonding on a beautiful day! Great memories of shooting with Dad. Plinking with a Marlin.22. I’ve got all kinds of firearms now, but nothing beats those days. People that don’t shoot just don’t get how relaxing & therapeutic it can be for body, soul, & mind.

Got confused for a second. When he said "half speed" and I saw her work, I thought "If that's half speed, look out Jerry Miculek!!" I guess he meant "do it, and then we'll play it back at half speed". Ahhh. Much better. She is wicked good. Love to see that. Also interesting to see the difference between using the slide lock versus the "reach over" and pulling the slide back from the "gross motor skills" school of thought. Much faster her way.

  • @TommyRibs
    @TommyRibs 6 лет назад +1

Excellent video and some good techniques being shown here.
    My only question would be:
Under stress wouldn't the Sling shot method be more likely to succeed as you are using your entire hand instead of a single finger? (I know Larry mentioned Sling shot was OK)
Again, I am asking as a question, not saying what is right or wrong.
I like the method of bringing the pistol in to your frame and turning it to re-load the mag. They teach that at Sig-Sauer Academy as well.

Tommy Ribs you aren’t using a finger, you use the thumb of the support hand. The thumb is the strongest digit, the most capable in this drill.

I have a question. Might be a stupid one, as I don't know anything about competition shooting, but I'm interested in getting into it. Anyhow, I thought that the slide lock lever was used to manually lock the slide to the rear.... and if you use the level to RELEASE the slide, it would "damage/rub down" the slide (where it makes contact) and/or the lock level over time. Is this correct? If so, how long does it actually take to wear those parts out if at all? Thanks

Nope...slide lock is also slide release. That's the way Mr. Browning designed it. I carried a 1911 .45 for my entire 36 year LE career, was an instructor for 14 years and still shoot the pistol since retiring. The only time I ever had to replace a slide lock lever was on a LW Colt Commander that had several thousand rounds through it over 25 years. The hole in the aluminum frame wallowed out a little and the pin became sloppy. An oversized slide stop from Brownell's, a few minutes with some emery cloth and we're back in business.

My instructor is a great guy and a really good teacher. But he is so hung up on me using my support hand thumb to release the slide instead of using my dominant hand thumb. I don’t know why that matters because I’m just as fast using my support thumb to release the slide as I am with my dominant hand. Actually I’m a little faster doing it my way.

We said that it's bad for the sear engagement on your trigger job to release the slide stop and slam the slide forward without the resistance from the weight of a round being chambered to slow it down. You must have watched 20 seconds of the video and thought you knew more than we do. What Mandy is doing here is exactly right.
