The reason this worked so convincingly is because Jim Carrey has one of the most expressive faces in Hollywood
Indeed and even with that benefit the blend wasn't entirely accurate. This technology can only take us so far. It's entertaining but will always fall a bit short of the mark because the eye can perceive even the most minute discrepancy when paired against unaltered reality.
I think it also helps that, in this video, the blur effect is pretty strong, look how blurred Shelley Duvall's face is in this scene.

it also helps that jack kind of shares certain physical mannerisms Jim is known to do so it matches up perfectly in a lot of spots especially in the next one where he stalks wendy up the staircase.
It is scary how real this looks. The expressions, lip movement and even the different angles to his face, it all looks very convincing.
TheTomimt It kind of shows off how good of an actor Jack Nicholson is. The fact that it looks like Jim Carrey, the way Nicholson talks and the way his expressions translate through Carrey’s face are all so refined that he still comes across as the character Jack Torrance.

He has no character all to himself. He borrows from many. But does such a good job you mistake it as original work.
Jack has a super expressive face, but people don't notice because I don't know. Jim Carrey is also super expressive, but usually for a comedic raisin, so it stands out more. Me? I had a stroke and can't move my face, it's okay, I'm 90, it happened when I was 88, I'm not going to be around much longer, and I ain't as handsome as I used to me LOL so no little hot 18 year old would fuck me anyway. Wife hates me, always did, my parents forced her to marry me. I didn't like her either. But we put up with each other because we gotta. My parents are long dead, but we can't divorce, everytime we bring up divorce it triggers bad memories that flood our mind. But we'll be free. I'll die, probably at 91 like my parents did, and my wife will live on as a happy 37 year old, she deserves a comparable partner, someone her age. We all deserve someone nice, I never got that
That I think is the most amazing part about deepfakes: what separates deepfakes from things like FaceSwap is that the program uses the base footage of the person who’s face is being applied and learns how they express themselves, move their face, how their lips wrinkle, how their eyes crease. It really is frighteningly realistic technology.

it does not work like that. When they are actors there is more gesture registration. thanks to that they can make assemblies, to the variety of gestures. in the case of a singer there would not be so much.

I just showed this to my wife, announcing this is not from a big FX studio but one guy (or girl) with a yt account and a lot of competence. After watching she asked "well, where was the SFX?". Not knowing the original movie, she didn't realize, that Jim Carreys performance wasn't real. Awesome achievment!!!

Tip for the future: the only problem I see is the color matching; I think if you color matched the input head pic to match to the source film, it'd be damn near perfect! You could also color grade the face in post so it matches.

That made it so realistic.
I felt sorry for her character. She was just being loving and nice.

People are getting so adept at lying and faking information that soon we'll reach a state where no one trusts anything - or, simply chooses arbitrarily what they believe (which will just be an exacerbated version of where we are now, I suppose, which is bad enough already).
This guy's work is beyond amazing.

No I don't think so. He would probably do it to over the top and be to much like Nicholson. I'd rather see someone else. Someone who can come off as a nice guy but then also look very intimidating.
My only problem with the movie was pointed out by Stephen King himself. Nicholson started off crazy, whereas Jack was supposed to slowly get crazier. I don't think Carey would restrain himself, at least in his coke blowing days

The only difference between funny derranged and scary derranged is the reactions of the people around, and whether or not the person has an axe in his hands.
