This role is already one of the most praised...
Honestly, I think she should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. I find her terrified reactions to be even more chilling than Jack Nicholson's menacing performance.
@@harleyzethAre you high?!? Shelley Duval has never won an Oscar in her life, let alone for this role. You really need to check Google before you show people how uninformed you truly are.

I like how honest she is about the experience.
Right? Like she isn’t just up there shilling for the studio or hyping the movie up. She is being candid about her experience, gut level- as we should
In the last phrase of that part she justify Kubrick ... These part don't like me.
As she should be. Im glad she spoke up about her abhorrent treatment
She (is)was brave and I loved her in that movie.
It was interesting to see her express exactly how she felt about him. The cynical look on his face appeared like he got off on giving her hell (being that he could see that his behavior was negatively affecting her). Or he went overboard with his shenanighans so that she could be the nervous wreck that he needed the character to portray in that role.
they better fucking honor her in a huge way at the Oscar’s or something. It makes me so mad and sad at the same time how much she had to suffer in the name of art & making one of the greatest horror movies of all time. rest in power Queen
The Oscars is a satanic ritual… and I’m not even a Christian
Well said.
I just watched a video where she said she knew in the end, that he loved her. Then I see this! I always thought he was mean to her. Weird to see the other video. She made it just a few months ago.
I think this poses an important question: is it worth having luxuries (cinema, jewelry, electronic devices, etc) if someone must suffer on its behalf?

Art should never warrant abuse. It's a fallacy that it is ever required to get 'the best' out of people and such a statement in the routine justification abusers give. Like Michael Jackson's father for instance. Abuse can motivate people to achieve excellence but as a people we should be reinforcing that a person's psychological and physical welfare - spiritual too but not everyone believes in that - trump the creation of art/product EVERY. TIME. Pain is not the same as suffering. He could have used other methods or ways of communicating with her that got an even better performance.
Dude stfu. Loser giving lecture about things he has never done lmao. How many movies have you directed? I'll tell you don't answer: ZERO.
Of course abuse is bad, but I don't think this could be categorized as such and let's not pretend she couldn't have walked away at any moment if she wanted to. No one had a gun to her head or forced her to do anything that she wasn't willing to do. I've seen all the behind-the-scenes clips from the movie and I never saw anything from Kubrick that suggests abusive behavior. Sure, 100+ takes of one scene is rough, but being a perfectionist director who holds high standards from actors doesn't equate with abuse. That's just a tough boss. Directors routinely purposefully fluster actors before a dramatic scene because it often DOES fish out a better performance from them.

If Jack Nicholson acknowledges and gives seriousness to the fact that Shelley went through an entirely different ordeal/experience on set, it was REALLY bad.
You adding contex thats not there. For all we know he could have been saying he was different with her.....as in nicer.

Stanley was cruel to her. He should never have been allowed to treat her this way. No director should ever have this kind of power. Shelly you are a great actress. He was a monster.
Absolutely agree! I & many others still don't even get the point... Stephen King himself has said many times her character was *meant* to be STRONG! He wrote her as a strong independent woman! Why the hell Kubrick changed her into a *completely* submissive flower petal is beyond me and King. 🤦
@@Simone-Bucn Probably because he was a misogynist pig.
@Simone-Bucn yes, the changes made by Kubrick just seem misogynistic kind of
@@Simone-Bucn that's why you're not a renowned film director

@@etalex7074 not important enough to mentally abuse some and cause health problems that have lasted ever since
@@dramaticcheese_ The whole “Kubrick caused health problems for the rest of her life” is a complete myth that infantilizes Shelley. She had a very fruitful career after The Shining.
She played her part so well. No one but Shelly could pulled that off. She was amazing when she couldn't get out of the window and tells Danny to run and hide. What a great mom.
*"What a great mom."*
😆
@puglove876
She was playing a ROLE, not being a "great mom."
I loved her acting, very well played and she did great with her acting ❤😅
That man traumatised that poor woman to make her role more believable, the man was sick
Shelly.. you are a real fragile angel from another world... We love you, rest in peace..
What a film, her performance was nothing short of sensational. Both her and Jack were outstanding
It's a shit film, truly rubbish.
Too bad it cost her her sanity
I feel the opposite, it cost her her sanity and it ended up being a subpar, kinda boring, and monotonous movie.
@@Aramis___0_ohow’s it feel being wrong

She made this movie, without her it wouldn't have been the same movie ❤
That women did NOT deserve what Stanley and SO many other in Hollywood did to her. They systematically tortured her and then never provided any help. She is so insanely talented and just an amazingly sweet person.
This is my all time favorite movie. I understand the craft of acting from my own experience...Her role was not a easy one. She did an amazing job & the movie would never be as great as it was without Shelly. May she rest in peace & be remembered for her gift of being a talented actress. 💙
Wow. This was eye opening. I heard of Kubrick treating her badly before but this video really gives a more clear lens into what she went through because of him. So sad
Apparently he was using terror as a way to "enhance" her acting. I call it torture with more than a little unhealthy dose of sexism. His mom treated him like a miracle and he always acted like women owed him obedience.
@@thornybackdidn't he also forbid the rest of the cast to talk to her? I heard that some years ago but idk how true it was
@@lounirs Yes, you're right. He isolated Shelly from the rest of the cast. They couldn't even communicate. He singled her out.
She was discovered at a party in Texas by Robert Altman while he was working on a film there. He said she was the most positive, upbeat person he'd ever met in his life. Shelly never had any acting ambitions, but Altman saw something in her. Soon after, he cast her in the movie 3 Women with Sissy Spacek. A really good sleeper.
Even Jack Nicholson acknowledged how different Kubrick treated Shelley compared to the rest of the cast. Very messed up.
@@thornybackOh here we go. How is he sexist for this?
She was AMAZING in that film.
Dude she ruined that movie straight up.
Not to mention the pure torture he put her through! Not feeding her and holding knives to her neck and threading her with them so she would be scared and do better....he did some inhuman things to this poor actress that her mental health never recovered.

Word anywhere in life. It's bad enough that we beat ourselves down. We don't need anyone else putting salt on our cuts.😢
What Stanley Kubrick did to Shelley was absolutely inexcusable. The mental trauma she got from this she had to live with for the rest of her life. What he did to her as a Director would not even fly today in the slightest. Shelley should’ve gotten more recognition for her role in this film for all that she went through

In 2021, Shelley Duvall spoke of the emotional toll of performing the role of Wendy Torrance and the challenges of long days on the set but said that Kubrick was "very warm and friendly" to her. She also rented a small apartment in order to be close to the set. Kubrick’s daughter Vivian called the Dr. Phil episode about her “exploitative”.
That poor woman suffered badly. I love her still to this day!
One of my favourite films is The Shining. But, to know what Shelley Duvall went through at the hands of Stanley Kubrick is just horrible to know. He really put her through hell. And, then when the film was released she got a Razzie! Unbelievable. She definitely should have won an Oscar. She worked so hard.
