I really appreciate you making this video. I have a John Deere 320E skid steer and two of the fittings (same one on each side) would not take grease. As a last ditch effort to fix, I bought one from Tractor Supply for $50. I used Marvel Mystery Oil as my oil. I tried several times with a ball peen hammer but decided to keep trying over the course of two weeks. I would hit it a few times, then use the skid steer and I would give it a few taps whenever I was out at the barn. Tonight it paid off, after trying for a couple of weeks the oil worked its way into the joint and it will now take grease. Saved me $250-500 in labor plus the time and expense of hauling an 8000 lb machine to the dealer.
@@Mr_Get_Muddy I plan on making a video to help others as you did. Most videos I have seen have been tractors and smaller equipment. Patience paid off. thanks again.
I just bought a cheaper version of this tool at the parts store. I want to see how it works and if it wears out or breaks I'll replace it with this USA made version. I'm a industrial maintenance guy and I think the idea of these are real cool and handy.
Thank you! It worked after 20 or 30 whacks and a better fittings. Saved my but a lot of work pulling a pin that i already tried hard to remove (with weld.) Watched your video this morning. Found a us made one around noon. Success at 3pm.
I would have to agree with you. There's a mixture that you can make that in my opinion is one of the best all-purpose lubricants. One part transmission oil and one part paint thinner. I've also seen people use denatured alcohol. The alcohol/ paint thinner will cut through dried Grease and break it down and then evaporate. The transmission fluid will then lubricate the surface.
I operate a large screener as well as a loader and excavator so obviously I have no shortage of grease zerks to maintain. I ended up buying a LockNLube Grease Buster, same kinda thing just much easier to handle.
This is a really good tool. Be sure the tool is liquid full so compressing air does not degrade the hydraulic shock. I found mineral spirits works best for knocking out plugs and cleaning the grease zerk [fitting].
I think the piston kept bouncing out because he never purged the chamber of air after adding oil. Oil acts like a piston, and if there is only oil in the chamber ahead of the piston, all the force of the hammer works on the block. the air just acts like a spring and absorbs the energy from the hammer blow, and returns it by flinging the piston out.
@@benpena2832 after using it quite a bit I've learned not to use aerosol cans, on a count of the aeration. I use jack oil and I fill it to the top. There's enough of a gap on the tip of the piston to start it and it's almost guaranteed not to have air. I also use a rag where you would hold the two together for a better grip and soak up any oil. Good luck brother
These work much faster if you use a Liquid Wrench or another penetrating oil, not motor oil, to cut through the old grease you need a solvent, not lubricant..
I would have used the LOCK 'N LUBE grease fitting on your gun so you don't waste the grease. For the stubborn fittings use the GREASE BUSTER from LOCK 'N LUBE with an air hammer it works great.
Lock N Lube is good but has a lot of flaws. The lever that is used to engage and disengage the coupler will easily become detached from the coupler with no way to fix...another $50 for a new coupler. When attached to a blocked zerk and pumped to the point of extreme pressure the lock n lube is all most impossible to remove. Will not fit in some areas where the zerk is recessed similar to the one in the video. Better for some uses but not the best....I'm still searching for that coupler that is everything it says it is!

Could you not remove and replace the fitting? You've forced the blockage materials into the bearing, followed by oil, which is not what the bearings need. My 2 cents worth.
I’ve found more times than not that it’s usually not the fitting that’s plugged, but the old grease inside of the bushing. By all means, check the fitting 1st, but these do work.
A zerk fitting is 25¢, where do you think the junk goes from the fitting? In an environment that's designed to be cleaned and well lubricated. And you literally destroyed it. Wasted time, money and use of your brain.

Use it on all rease zeros 1 time a year helps clean out old dry grease I use ATF with a little brake fluid works great

No problem 👍 these tools are worth their weight in gold
Hell yeah ! Saves a lot of work tearing it down, I’m buying one ! Cheers from AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺
Cheers Mate ! They are one of the best tools I have
I got that same tool it works great I used brake clean in it to get the fittings to take grease after
the brake clean is not as thick and it seems to work great idk how motor oil works never tried that.
I’ve used these before and they work best with a really light oil (WD40 or Transmission).
I would have to agree with you.

I have the same problem with our 289.. I will sure try this . thanks

Thats true liquid does not compress 👍🏼
Absolutely
I agree though get a lock and lube those things are worth their weight in gold !!!🤘🤘
Point it up and get the air out first. Otherwise you won't have hydraulic pressure the air will just compress
This comment helped me a lot. I was like “how do get the air out?” I immediately thought of an injection shot. Thanks

The only bummers about the lock and lube brand it doesn’t come with a case to put it safely away.thus lost parts!

You've not greased anything before.
Or not enough
Grease is oil, 1/4 oz of oil or less isn't going to hurt anything unless it's food grade.

Explain why you don't just change out the fitting???
A lot of the times I do. I just like trying out tools and seeing if they actually work.
