Hearing Yahtzee say "Wheeeee, wheeee, I'm happy now!" with a giant smile on his face is the sunshine I didn't know I needed in my life
I love how the editing for this series is allowed to get a bit crazy
im with ya, its good fun and it sounds kinda racist
Love it! Hectic, cracks me up
It sounds kinda racist!
The actual content reflects this too, the guys seem all much more relaxed into it now after just a few months. I love to see them goofing around actually having FUN with games, even if the games are kinda bad. Too many gamers have forgotten that's what games are for.
Portal Stories: Mel and Aperture Tag are both very good fan-made Portal spin-offs. The puzzles in Portal Stories: Mel are on par with the ones in Portal 1 and 2. Aperture Tag is very fun since you use the gels rather than the portals. I highly recommend both to people who want more Portal.
Portal Stories: Mel was really excellent. Been ages since I played it but I remember feeling that story-wise it fit right in, and the puzzles were challenging.
@@StubbornMinion There was a puzzle near the end that took me absolute ages to do even with looking up how to solve it. That was before they added in some sort of story mode (I think it's something like that) that adjusts the puzzles.
Pity Aperture Tag doesn't work. The Linux start script is bugged and the devs won't fix it.
@@Roxor128 I didn't know that. I played it on PC and never had any problems.
I was so confused why Yahtzee didn't mention the time travel portal and then realised I was thinking of Reloaded not Revolution.
Which of course proves the point about stupid unimaginative sequel titles.
Still, Yahtzee you should definitely try Reloaded! It has a brand new mechanic to play with!
I feel like Portal: Reloaded would be far more up Yahtzee's alley personally. It has way less emphasis on a story and more focus on solving the puzzles - namely using a third portal that takes you to the same test chamber in a different time period. This created a whole new set of rules, a very unique way of thinking with Portal and some of the most challenging puzzles from any Portal mod I've seen so far
Too bad that Reloaded's puzzles get way too complex towards the end, to the point where, when I looked up the solution to the last level, my response was "how is ANYONE supposed to figure THAT out?".
@@ThisIsNotMyRealSelf Completely fair, I ended up completely stumped on about half the chambers lol
Exactly! Coincidentally, I recently finished playing both mods. I liked them, but I feel their names being swapped would've been more appropriate. Portal: Revolution's title and trailer (showing the new laser-conducting cubes) made me think it was going to introduce a hefty of new mechanics into gameplay, when in reality very few new things are introduced (and you only interact with said cubes in the final two chapters of the game, not even in the "final boss"), wrapping up with an underwhelming ending. Portal: Reloaded does a lot more with its introduction of time travel and how it affects both puzzles and pre-established mechanics of the Portal franchise. I've seen some people call Portal: Revolution the "Portal 3 we've been waiting for," but I think that title is more appropriate for Portal Stories: Mel, which is also free and blows Revolution out of the water
are we just doing matrix titles for portal fan games? when is portal resurrections coming out
@@viniciusbaltar632 As someone whose profile pic everywhere is the desktop icon from Portal Stories: Mel, I have to agree that it is very good. Great music too.
Ah, the pure glee of a man and his grappling hook mechanics
@@channel_lurker wut?
Videos like these remind me of two things. 1. Why I not only still love Yahtzee's sense of humor but also love it even more now that Yahtzee has colleagues he can comedically bounce off of. 2. Yahtzee's line from his ZP of Psychonauts 2. "Speaking as someone who's brain is a fixer-upper on a good day..." I think of that every time I see Yahtzee like this and I'm like "Wow! There's a lot of me I can see in Yahtzee."😅😆
The use of outtakes/b roll on the credits is awesome. Do it more.
Agreed that is a great way to pass the credits. Hong Kong learned that in the 80s.
12:17 i got that Red Dwarf reference!
Yahtzee very slightly leaning into the grappling hook is cinema.
I'm surprised everyone is going nuts over Portal: Revolution when Portal Stories: Mel came out years ago (2015? 2016?) and did basically everything better! A mod midquel with challenging puzzles (too challenging in fact - an update had to add a lower difficulty option) which starts you with the dual portal gun off the bat. Because it knows that if you're playing a mod, you probably know what you're doing!
The soundtrack has some great tracks too, especially Troubled Water. They even had a different version of each track for when you're in an excursion funnel.
Only problems I had with it were the poor Cave Johnson impersonation at the start. It is difficult to match J.K. Simmons' voice and energy. It doesn't stray far from the established portal story formula either (extended sleep, core helps you, fight a big computer) but it fit well enough for me.
Well, everybody probably has played Portal Stories: Mel already, so it's nice to have something new. I liked that game (I really like the aesthetic of old Aperture), I liked Portal Reloaded and I liked Portal Revolution.
I agree that Revolution isn't as good as Mel, but it has a lot going for it, in tech wise (Strata Source could be the next jumping off point for Valve mods) and even story wise. For once, I think the character writing is better than most mods, because they often have the one Wheatley clone that tries to be quirky, but here characters such as Emilia are a fresh take on cores. It also incorporates some lesser used Portal 2 concepts such as assets and lore elements from the coop campaign. It does feel a bit expansion packy, but I think it's really solid. I also feel a lot of potential was wasted and the game was a bit rushed in the last quarter or so, but I rate it above Reloaded (really basic story and incosistent use of the new puzzle element), Aperture Tag (overall feels unfinished) and TwTM (feels like a good idea hidden behind fanfictioney junk and overdone difficulty).
@@apierror I've been trying to play Reloaded but keep getting stuck because the time portal mechanic is so complex. I know that's the point but it makes for an odd difficulty curve!
I didn't care much for the story of Aperture Tag but I thought the goo gun mechanics were pretty fun. The best part was absolutely the escape sequence because instead of solving a portal-based puzzle, you got to do an action sequence, and the mechanics were built perfectly for it!
For me personally: Portal 2 > Mel > Portal 1 (sue me) > Aperture Tag > Reloaded > Revolution. Never tried time machine, I didn't even hear about it until now.
Revolution is definitely not as good as Mel but I'd put it above Reloaded and TwTM as far as Portal mods go. (Never played Tag)
Mel was great but it was also a while ago so everyone's played it already. Having something that comes near it in quality is exciting.
I actually liked how long Revolution kept the single portal gun - it led to some interesting puzzle designs. It's more the extended tutorial section that lets it down. Along with the environmental designers being too overeager, the walking simulator sections, and Stirling being too boring a character for the first half of the game.
Portal: Reloaded definitely did a good job building on the original Portal games in a way that felt fresh instead of just redoing the original. Granted the time portal mechanic is a big step up in difficulty but it does make you feel incredibly big brained once you figure out a level as a consequence.
As a person with the desktop icon from a portal fangame as my profile picture, I feel slightly obligated to recommend "Portal Stories: Mel" to anyone who thought Portal: Revolution didn't quite do it for them. It's a genuinely good Portal game imo, with great music too.
12:16 Yahtzee does his best Cindy The Skull impression
I laughed out loud
More he does his best Lister impression
Tiny bit of Cunoesse in there
It's Lister from Red Dwarf in the episode Timeslides (S3E5) when they go back in time and meet young Lister who describes everyone and everything as cryptofacist.
as others have said it’s a red dwarf reference!!
2:45 Loving "The Thick Of It" references! I see Yahtzee has a good taste in TV shows.
My face broke out into a smile when Yahtzee made that Red Dwarf reference.
It was a totally shady reference
@@JimmiCottam It's beyond shady it's surreal
Who cares
@@notveryniceatallYou cared enough to make a comment...
Loved the Red Dwarf reference :)
Yahtzee going weeee was something I didn’t know I needed
Yahtz was right about The Night is Grey's forgettable title.
My brain immediately interpreted it as The Night is Gay.
I would play the shit out of a game called the night is gay
Idea: The Knight is Gay, a game about a Knight trying to cope with his homosexuality in a time period where that's considered evil.
@@Haaalp Y E S
@@Haaalp at first I wanted to jokingly dismiss that title, but the more I think about it the more I want this game/story
If you're looking for a game to scratch the Portal itch, you should try Portal Stories: Mel. Highly recommended
Hearing Frost adlibbing is so strange after only hearing his recent opinion pieces.
It’s like I expected his video voice to be a bit put on
I absolutely love the quotes placed during the credits ❤
Of course Yahtzee knows Malcolm Tucker quotes. Excellent stuff.
They need to make a speed run rhythm shooter in hell so they can get GotY from Fully Rambloalmatic
With a boat and a grappling hook
Ultrakill is only missing "rhythm" part then (although I guess there is some rhythm skill required for certain mechanics). Also has a Grappling Hook!
Yahtzee's already ZP'd Metal Helllsinger in case you missed it
12:15 - Quote from Dave Lister meeting his younger self in "Timeslides", S3E5 of the early 90's BBC comedy series Red Dwarf. Oh yes.
this is the first one of these i've seen since the dawn of Second Wind, and I've got to say the energy of the whole team is just in a much better place than it was at the other joint. Yahtzee actually seems to be having fun lol.
The Octopus-Line makes me come back here way too often, damnit Yahtz!
Thanks for the Red Dwarf reference. Lister is always welcome.
On the subject of fan made prequels to games Yahtzee likes, I now wanna see him try Undertale Yellow.
i am glad that yahtzee knows lines from the thick of it off by heart
Always appreciate a good Red Dwarf reference
Something about Yahtzee shouting 'BIG BRAAAAAAINS....BIG BRAAAAAAAAINS.....DEAAD!' made me crack up laughing so hard xD
Has Yahtzee played Portal Reloaded? That one was pretty good imo, and the puzzles with the time portal were fcking mindbending at times (or maybe I´m just a lil stupid, who knows)
Me, telling my partner just yesterday that i sat in my car to clean my glasses before going in to see the eye doctor, cause I didn't want the nice lady to yell at me cause I wiped my glasses on my shirt like the last time I was there >.>;
Just wanna quickly say that, since Yahtzee originally coined it, I consistently use the term "big thicky bobo" to describe myself lol
Yay Red Dwarf reference!
Puzzle Hype Man was an underrated joke.
with a name like kick bastards i was expecting a doom clone with a bit more melee involved, but i was surprised and it does look pretty fun
I have no mouth, and must eat buttered toast.
I forgot what I read as the title to this video so when you said the night is grey I thought it was 'The Knight is Grey' and it was gonna be a game about an elderly knight
I completely agree with your criticisms of the night is gray but when I finished the game I felt a little different about it.
Just when I thought my brain erased hunt down the freeman, yahtze just had to remind me of its existence
This really makes me wanna hear Yahtzee's thoughts on Thief: The Black Parade.
Reading the comments taught me, there are a lot of fan made Portal mods.
The first hour of "portal: revolution" indeed feels very same-y. But after a few hours the more innovative things start coming out.
Nice bit of red dwarf there
It's nice to know Yahtzee watched The Thick of It.
Kick Bastards have a grappling hook, therefore it's Yahtzee's favorite game
Gotta have that occasional The Thick of It reference from Yahtzee
That Red Dwarf reference during Portal XD
I'd never seen Frost until this video. I kind of expected him to be black and white like an old movie.
I found the ball bouncing bug pretty revolutionary, took me an hour to recognize it might be a bug
I suddenly want to go play with the portal 2 level editor.
This one feels... better produced? I don't know if that is the word. But better than the previous 'tries'
Thanks for the content!
See, we all wouldn't need antidepressants if we all had grappling hooks
Lmao at the thinking sounds at the end
Great Red Dwarf
Gotta love a Red Dwarf reference. "Will you stop saying crypto-fascist? You're making me sound like a complete git."
"I don't want to be mean here..." - Yahtzee, of all people.
Portal Reloaded on the other hand isn't just more of Portal, it's more. They added 2 new portals, and it is just... insane. It allows you to travel to the past, and whatever you did in the past will affect the present. Including your normal portals, which is just... confusing. xD
What if other livestreams also have highlight videos like Yahtzee Tries?
We might do a monthly highlights video at some point. Still got some new shows incoming for now though, so we're using Instagram / TikTok etc to share funny clips and stuff from our streams!
I feel like they should've made the knockoff Wheatley very loudly angry with you breaking things. I feel like portal having an audibly angry bot instead of another passive aggressive waffler would've stuck the landing.
I find it interesting that it used to be accepted wisdom that first-person platforming is a shitty idea (indeed, watch Yahtzee’s review of Mirror’s Edge for that), but now - through experimentation and refinement of the mechanics - has become perfectly workable
I don't even think it was an issue all the way back then. Most 1st person platfrormers had enough tolerance that trusting your instincts on where you thought the edge was made things run absolutely fine.
❤ you guys!
Yachtzee kid saying their favorite part was the the end is funny as hell
Yahtzee apparently also does a great Winnie the Pooh impression
Portal Revolution's story is very derivative of Portal 2's story, and IMO the puzzles are way too easy and never increase in difficulty, but damn, did I have a great time with it
Have you played Portal Stories: Mel?
Wait. You're telling us that Portals second sequel is derivative of the same formula they've been using? *shocked pikachu face*
@@Scrungii yes, including the advanced mode
@@vVex_ yeah me too, after advanced mode Revolution was a vreeze
Portal Too
I liked Portal*dryheave*Revolution for it's puzzles, but otherwise it felt like it had a lack of life or joy to it. In the 2 games, it felt like you could explore and find things that were rewards for doing so. Here, every time I thought I found a secret, I had in fact found the one true path for progress. The only times I got a room I maybe wasn't meant to, or didn't have to, I could...pick up a chair?
Yahtzee, im not sure if you read these but i think a game you would enjoy (a rare sight, i know) is ULTRAKILL. Its also set in hell, has a unique artistic style (which most games have nowadays have) and has a huge speedrunning scene and a leaderboard. It has humour mixed in that lands well, and memorable designs.
Also, has a grappling hook. I hope you do read this, and i hope you might review it one day.
In case it hasn't been said in the comments yet, if you liked Portal 1 & 2, the free fanmade mod Portal Stories: Mel is a great game to play. I know it's not new, but you could play it for a stream some other time if you want (or even on your own, it's all good). Point is; check it out! and Have a nice day too.
if yahtzee is going to do fan games on this show i'd be interested in seeing what he thinks of undertale yellow
cursed request thats like asking what he thinks of friday night funkin lmao
Moretal Too
Thumbs up for Powdered Toast Man!
Who does the jazz piano song at the end?
May I recommend Void Stranger. Its one of those subversive games that Yahtzee seems to sometimes like.
The Night is Grey tastes just like sawdust!
I wanted Portal Revolution to be Portal Stories: Mel 2, and with such a high quality bar for my expectations I probably was bound to be let down. But it's definitely worth it to play for any Portal fan.
I don't remember Yahtzee streaming Portal; Revolution. Where is is the full stream?
Or is it one of those Patreon Exclusive things?
We have no Patreon Exclusive things. We streamed it this past Wednesday. Yahtzee Tries LIVE is every Wednesday at 3 PM CT.
Has Yahtzee ever tried Cyberhook. I feel like it would be up his alley(first-person speedrun game)
Nice
Oh I like this. This feels like the other side of the coin to the irreverent cod is spung gargle wee wee tone. Its just him giving games a go and saying HEY I liked that part! Look at him its posative happy Yahtzee!
If you like Kick Bastards, you should try Cyber Hook
It seems very similar to Seum too
There's got to be a couple of decent Alyx mods out there besides the Goldeneye maps. Just a thought for April Fools or something. :)
when it comes to portal fan games, maybe try portal stories mel, portal reloaded, or aperture tag ^_^
Marty saying: “It sounds kinda r*****” is now My favourite clip xD
Nice videos, we like to see them
It might be bias against big corporations but you all seem to have a way better time running things youself❤. Love the vibes of this channel
ok but did yahtzee play far enough to meet the Australian robot? i want to hear his thoughts on that
Even the plot of Portal Revolution is a copy of the plot of Portal 2 with their jokes changed, instead of having a moron we had a vacuum cleaner
i kinda want that 'it sounds kinda racist' bit to be brought up, when there is very clearly another person alongside Yahtzee in a different episode entirely for the lulz
Portal Revolution took to long with introduction levels. You spend so much time until you get the full portal gun.
Red Dwarf reference Red Dwarf reference
Who cares
If Yahtzee wants to wash the taste of Hunt Down the Freeman, then I would recomend Entropy Zero 1 & 2. Their gmaes based off of Half-Life 2 where you get to play as one of the Combine and they're excelent games that are completely free.
Seeing someone bounce off of Yahtzee's sense of humor is amazing, awesome, sweet, funny, cute, and wholesome☺😊💖😄
I remember Yahtzee as less of game reviewer and more of Indie game developer
Here's a comment to feed the algorithm:
What would it take to get Marty, Yahtzee, and other Silent Hill fans on the team to check out Silent Hill Ascension? I have a feeling we would have to go full Clockwork Orange on Yahtzee.
3/10 for the Scottish accent but 10/10 for being a Malcolm Tucker quote
Portal: Revolution did have a few new mechanics that Yahtzee didn't actually get to, but they weren't big enough to be called Portal 3, as well as the humor found very lacking due to the overacting. Portal Reloaded, with the time Portals, added a unique dimension to game that turned it into a but of a mindfuck sometimes
❤❤
Come on, doesn't the Portal 2 Workshop count for anything? 8:51
