why do people call him "doug walker" if he sits most of the time?
Seriously. How many dougs has he actually walked?
There was an old bit on OneyPlays where they talk about his parents naming their kids after what they're going to grow up to do, and Doug Walker was actually named "Dog Walker," but he started going by Doug when he broke from tradition to do RUclips reviews.
Because Doug Walked so Linkara could run

🎵Hey, hey, hey...🎵
I think it’s inaccurate to say that he was never good. While I understand that popularity doesn’t equal quality, things that are wholly cancerous to watch in media simply don’t become as successful as Doug Walker did. He’s honestly underrated. Go back and watch his old material, both his reviews and stuff like Attack of the Commercials where he riffs on nostalgic advertising, and he’s actually funny. He even does good sketches here and there. I still go back sometimes and laugh at some of that stuff, like his commentary on a horrifying Canadian abuse PSA or his Garbage Pail Kids review.
His biggest issue was that he never found a way to adapt his content for the changing times and also became way too big for his boots. He wasn’t able to expand far beyond the NC character because he wasn’t able to be self-aware or ironic enough to produce at a higher level. Dan Olsen, unfortunately, nails it in his review of NC’s The Wall when he says that Doug is someone who wants to make art, wants to be a real filmmaker, but can’t because he’s just not very interested in other people or how they think so all his ideas boil down to “what if Mario met Batman”.
Still, if he’d treated his co-creators better and didn’t allow himself to be taken in by soulless corporate jackasses he would have been fine and still respected today, probably. Zach Hadel said it best when he remarked that if the Channel Awesome guys had played their cards right ten years ago, they could have been the Iron Bank. But instead, they tore themselves apart with mismanagement and just a lack of basic human services. Allowing JewWario to run around as long as they did was their most unforgivable action.
In terms of his material alone, I think it's more enjoyable when Doug's giving his personal perspectives, which you can see largely in his non-NC reviews (and some less sketch-focused NC reviews). He also at least seems to have better developed a small team.
That said, the mismanagement is absolutely something to be eviscerated, especially as Doug doesn't ever feel like he satisfactorily addressed the core of the problems.
I've started to see some pushback against this hate towards Doug, specially against this narrative that he is "traped in a hell of his own creations" after the failure of Demo Reel and the revival of the critic.
@@iagomartinezdealegriamader52 Well he wasn’t always bad and people did genuinely like him. Plus, and I think that this is a really important part of it, he does have a sense of humour about himself or at least enough self-awareness to fake one. (Though I think it’s genuine.) People will forgive you a LOT if you roll with the punches. Linkara took the route of getting offended when OneyPlays made fun of him and that didn’t turn out well for him lol.
@@jackthereader I disagree when people say that he couldn't change with the times. One thing I've never seen mentioned is how, at some point after the return of the Critic, the character abandoned the "angry reviewer" approach to his videos. Although he is considered the main example of this kind of videos, the Nostalgia Critic no longer acts as if the bad movies that he chooses to review are physically painful to watch.
Everytime I find some corrent screeching angry reviewers, to me they comes across as old fashioned.
@@iagomartinezdealegriamader52 No, he just abandoned putting any personality in his videos and just recaps the movie. Total failure.
YMS and all the other film reviewers complaining about Doug being in Smiling Friends are just jealous lol.
Wow Doug Walker got his respect from Smiling Friends since Mike Stoklasa from Redlettermedia and James Rolfe from Cinemassacre.
Hold on, does Scoot legitimately not know who the Nostalgia Critic is
Scoot is ancient, he only understands 90s pro-wrestling references.
I don't really do RUclips, so no. Like, I've heard the name but I've never seen any content, and I didn't know who it was in Smiling Friends.
He's also apparently never seen a Pixar movie before.
@@Creampuf1977 This is correct
@@notscotthensonare you still alive?
I actually met Doug at C2E2. He seemed really nice in person.
Doug Walker knows his legacy and is comfortable with it, as long as he gets money out of it.

Tara's voice is beautiful despite her unsettling appearance, as someone who delved into the creation of 'I Feel Fantastic'(the android was created by a now-deceased machinery expert in the late 90s-Y2K). You made the right comparison, and Tara could have the songs written and programmed into her be given a record-label distributer, albeit on the indie side of things, and she'd be an overnight success despite people getting creeped out by her looks, hence the uncanny valley given to the I Feel Fantastic video originally posted anonymously without Tara's creator or son's consent, in addition to the story of Pygmalion added to the description.
@@Hedgpig What do you mean?
So Adam, when you're going to be free cameo along with Smiling Friends? If anything, then you'll be cameo like the one where you stare on the camera while showering and then grin a creepy face so that bunch of friendly helpers can work with that.
That would've been perfect for this episode.
Sure I'm waiting for Ralph, Alex from IHE, Saberspark, and Schafrillas to be part of cameos in Smiling Friends. Put me there purple kind friend, I need to be there to be smile.
1:11 this is borderline experimental
Even though Doug can make some pretty awful content and he's barely improved in the over a decade he's been doing this, I have to give him props that he works real hard; even with a team, making a 10-20 minute review a week with fully filmed and edited sketches is a lot of work, even if it's not executed well.
Also, I disagree with Adam when he says "Nostalgia Critic was never good". I grew up with Channel Awesome and AVGN in high school and I think I was the right age to enjoy it and I've since outgrown it.
A lot of people really are allergic to the concept of demographics, and will just write off something as universally shit. Even then, Doug had some pretty hysterical bits.
I agree its not fair to say that NC was never good.
🎵Melvin, Melvin, brother of the joker 🎵
That awful early bit aside, I do agree with you, demographics are a thing and a lot of people do seem to want to use the same "barometer" for everything they consume. I had fun with Channel Awesome and it's reviewers, some of it I still think holds up. I ocassionally rewatch Diamanda Hagan's stuff. I've discovered a lot of obscure and more dark subject cinema through her.
Nostalgia Critic seemed good to us when we were all 15, but it's not aged well
I've started to see some pushback against this hate towards Doug, specially against this narrative that he is "traped in a hell of his own creations" after the failure of Demo Reel and the revival of the critic.
Really seems like Doug has come around in recent years and become more self-aware, rolling with the jokes and memes he's become over the years, and, honestly, that's the best thing he could have possibly done. When he's not adhering strictly to the NC persona (Doug Reviews, Dark Toons, Etc.), he's shown he's actually pretty insightful and knows his stuff. Yeah, he's had his share of downs over the years, but seeing the internet celebrate his SF cameo is actually kind of sweet, and makes me happy for him.
THE NC cameo was cool, but the I Feel fantastic feels like it gets under-mentioned in the same scene
I think what also goes unnoticed is that Charlie's uncle apparently has a very crazy life.

Someone tell Quinton Reviews this, he'll have an aneurysm.

Garfield wasn't always bad, that's a silly thing to say
I can only hope this means we'll get a LasagnaCat level tribute for Nostalgia Critic one day.
I appreciate that comment about Garfield, I don't know I just could never get into the original cartoon. Wasn't for me
You sound bitter, pal.
that's literally how he's been since he started his yt channel. dude's a broken record
The title of this video is ironic, cause years ago, I used to find Nostalgia Critic funny, and I have never once found YMS funny in the entire decade he's been around.
If NC is the Garfield of RUclips then AVGN is the Snoopy of RUclips
Quinton Reviews is going to cry while eating McDonalds when he reads that title.
If Nostalgia Critic is Garfield, then that means AVGN is Peanuts, but then who would the Heathcliff equivalent be?
Doug Walker is “baby’s first film reviewer”, in the same way that a band like Imagine Dragons is “baby’s first rock band”.
Just like how Star Wars is baby's first media.
Just like Joker is "baby's first character study".
This band prides themselves on making "emotional" music.
Dude, everyone makes emotional music. You have to be very talented to make a song with zero emotion
Doug did too much shit that wasn't funny to his coworkers. Like boring adult stuff that's just being shitty. He'll probably get a career revival out of this and fuck up everything again.
At least they didn't do the same for Chris-chan I guess.
Probably because of the #NotSoAwesome in 2018-2021
Didn't expected Doug's get up in the show. Like, when I glanced at the thumbnail of the short where he see his cameo I expected the cameo had him in his ussual get up, not in a Rob Zombie-esque cosplay.
1:17 THAT'S HOW THIS SOUND?! I don't even remember hearing it.
I wonder if Adam will do a watch along on smiling friends season 2
Its psychotic how much channel awesome lore occupied my brain when I was a teen
I still maintain that parody/skit recreations of films are a fun and unique way to do a review. Yeah, a lot of the time they don't work, but there's still a level of effort put into those reviews that makes them stand out next to the majority of film reviews which are mostly talking head pieces.
The main reason why they got Doug is because the creators and friends are quite fans of him more than anything
Hes the thing we liked when we were 8 and then moved on and it doesn't hold up at all?
yes, the title does say he is the garfield of youtube
@@Nigel_Blackistanthanks for reminding me
Doug Walker is the kind of person who doesn’t really mind making fun at him, So I don’t he’ll mind the Garfield Comparison.
this a pretty accurate comparison
What is Garfield the Garfield of?
I liked Nostalgia Critic, it is definitely OLD-INTERNET and now irrelevant, but you know it's like going from the Big Bopper to The Ramones. Wouldn't have the latter without the former, but the former doesn't hold up. Ramones definitely does. No one is giving two craps about Chantilly Lace.
I actually liked his reviews up until he “retired” the character. I never watch his anniversary specials or anything like that. His skits and parodies always feel so hollow. References for references sake. Him and Scary Movie are the sameeeee
Doug won
If Doug Walker is the Garfield of RUclips then what does that make you probably the paradise pd of RUclips or something
Doug was the TESLA of youtube. not really good but the first one who did the thing so he had a few years advantage
I love Smiling Friends and Helluva Boss/Hazbin for being able to perfectly encapsulate a portion of the internet with really STELLAr animation and atmosphere.
Nostalgia Critic was always awesome bro, it's literally in the channel name
I love both Garfield and the nostalgia critic 😅
Good luck when you arrive at EMO JONES
Sad knowing someone doesn't know who Doug is :(
Nah, nostalgia critic used to be great.
This guys voice is just like Chris chan
Sooo Quinton Reviews will be also obssesed on him???
Meme concept: Nostalgia Critic minus Nostalgia Critic
Or: Nostalgia Critic is starving and hallucinating everything post-Demo Reel
Honestly hating Doug Walker for anything other than calling him dumb just feels pointless, Most of the Internet has already come to the realization that Doug is a normal dude, He's an Idiot but he's not the worst person in the world, He's not a criminal, He's not abusive, He doesn't go out of his way to hurt people & he's certainly not a predator.
There was one time where someone accused Doug of being a predator but two weeks after we found out the same dude who accused him was infact a Predator themselves.
The Dude can take criticism & in his most recent reviews he's listened to most of them, He's seen all of the videos about him & he's even shown subscribed to some of the people that have criticized him, He's selfless & cares about the people he works with, even at his absolute worst the biggest mistake he's made was Poor Money Management which is a very normal issue most RUclipsrs often go through, My Family struggles every week with Money Management.
Dougs worst Crime is just being an Idiot, A Normal Filthy Casual Idiot & it's okay to not like him for that, that is the only valid reason you can have for not liking him, anything else at that point is just a stretch.
I don't think Nostalgiacritic's stuff was ever bad. Some of it I enjoyed a lot.
I highly suggest anybody to go watch the old thatguywithglasses videos. It's weird, it's like for a point the Nostalgia Critic character consumed Dougs entire person like Venom or something. He sincerely, actually cares about cinema and film making, and it makes it that much harder to watch him be so hollow playing a character for so many years, when it's so clear this entire time that he actually just wants to make movies and skits. He's not like a bad person or anything, and the Nostalgia Critic character is sort of a product of it's time in internet history.
It's just sort of puzzling why he never really pivoted out of the whole thing, and then doubled down on the production value when it took away from the original videos. It culminated in him making one of, probably actually the most infamous movie review(s) ever uploaded on this entire websites history; Nostalgia Critic's The Wall. He genuinely meant it in in that video when he said "this is a love letter to The wall" and it's legitimately baffling how he did not understand how low brow and insulting it is, he just thinks because he put in lots of time and greenscreened sequences and paid a furry 3d animator, that that means he made something inherently better. It's the mentality of everything the character hates. It's hollow, substanceless filmmaking.
I don't think his video's have always sucked, I think they retroactively suck because he got so stuck in character he never left. Kept making the same videos for like a decade, while something like AVGN that has a very similar thing was able to slowly pivot into being more genuine and talking as just himself, and the AVGN is much more fondly remembered. Call it the Simpsons Effect I guess.
Latelly I have seen a lot of discourse about NC and AVGN. I've started to see some pushback against this hate towards Doug, especially against this narrative that he is "trapped in a hell of his own creations" after the failure of Demo Reel and the revival of the critic.
One thing I've never seen mentioned is how, at some point after the return of the Critic, the character abandoned the "angry reviewer" approach to his videos. Although he is considered the example of this kind of videos, the Nostalgia Critic no longer acts as if the bad movies that he chooses to review are physically painful to watch.
That mini movie he made about him coming back years ago only proved just how much the critic took on a life of it's own, I often wonder just how long he can keep going he's looking pretty tired and a lot older these days but I hope it's later rather than sooner
Honestly at this point I'm expecting Adum to voice a one-off character in Smiling Friends soon
I actually like listening to Doug talk about movies and tv when he’s not in character and just doing a normal review. I just think he’s partially good at comedy and his NC reviews don’t provide enough actual insight on the film to be worth watching.
Is Doug Walker's content good (generally speaking)? Not really.
Is Doug Walker's content good when you compare it to what other media reviewers do? Yes. When you limit your comparison to only his peers, then yes, yes his content is good.
There is only so much you can do if you only make commentary about other people's stuff. It's a very limiting internet video genre.
lmao
Glad to see that Adam didn't jump on the bandwagon of youtubers trying to put doug in a bad light because of #changethechannel (even though the people spearheading that movement were just as in the wrong, if not more, than doug)
That's an insult to Garfield
You mean an insult to NC.
Don't worry, I make the same mistake sometimes too.
