Nigel, have you ever used stick patterns? It will stop y9ou making these measuring mistakes. We used them all the time in boat building as there's nothing square or straight in a boat. Rip up scrap, thin wood (hardboard is great - just buy a sheet) into say 2 inch lengths. Then position a strip (of whatever length is suitable for the space) against your panel, wall, chair-back whatever and get another to attach to it at whatever angle follows your fitting position and HOT GLUE them together. Use smaller bits to brace tricky angles and just continue until you have built your template. The hot glue holds fast but comes apart easily and cleanly for you to re-use the strips again and again.
And built a straight-cut sled for the table saw.... and buy a good hand plane to cut those angles rather than use the table saw that you don't suggest using ....
That giant jellyfish you have in your garden is a bit menacing too.

As a security feature on the other side of the sliding door (inside the cab) you could add a print of a photo of what appears to be an empty back of the van.

Try clamping your track saw track to your piece. You are moving the track and thus cuts aren’t straight 😊. Really enjoying the build!

I wouldn’t have wanted a partition wall in the first place, and a curtain would have provided the required privacy, but if I really needed a partition wall, I’d have put in a full size sliding or folding door. Internal easy access is very convenient, I think.

    • @jameshummel7349
      @jameshummel7349 Месяц назад +1

The amount of temperature control you lose by keeping it open is a huge trade off. Partitions can make up to a 30 degree difference between the cab and living area..

You are doing really well with your van. I am a professional carpenter with cabinet making experience. I have been using track saws for almost 30 years although I use Festool. Makita has been trying to copy Festool's track saws to a large degree. A curved rather than straight cut typically happens for one of two reasons. Most common is the vibration of the saw motor makes it easy enough for the track to move sideways at one end, moving slightly accross the paneling you are cutting (very easy if there is dust or saw dust between the track and the panel). The saw blade is the pivot point and you end up with a curve by the time you get to the other end. To prevent this you place a special clamp under the track (which slips into the groove in the underside of the track) at each end, clamping the piece you are cutting to the track, which anchors the track so it cannot move at all and you get a straight cut every time. the piece you are cutting needs to either overhang your bench a little or be mounted above the bench on gluts) In practice I hold a short track very still when it is not a critical cut but clamp all long or critical cuts all the time. Second possible reason for a lesser curve is the adjustment of the saw onto the raised ridge on the track which the saw runs on. There is usually a plastic cam on the bottom of the saw to take up any slack between the saw base and the raised rib on the track. Adjust it until the saw runs smoothly (doesn't bind on the ridge but has no slack). Mind you one or two millimeters movement is all you should ever get because of that adjustment cam. But zero movement if it is adjusted correctly. In your case I think it was the first reason. Use your clamps or buy them if you do not already have them. Well done. You are actually doing a great job.

Track Saws only produce straight and square cuts IF the wood does not move during the cut. In one part of the video, the track was tipping at the end of the cut. I have seen some woodworkers clamp the track to the wood before starting the cut. Thanks for the videos.

Track saws are good for breaking down sheet goods .2,4 x 1,2 m etc .
The Table saw is the best tool for forming repeatable accurate cuts for draws ,boxings ect
if your not comfortable with small cuts get yourself some mini cut jigs that fit into your table saw tracks to allow cuts down to the size of millimetres safely , and bow feather boards that allow you to free a hand and just make all cuts safer.
look up the extender fence also ,,, i have an idea you might like it.
good luck with the Van fit out , I'm watching to get my hopes up i can do it soon also.
    GL Nigel

With track saws and long rails/ short pieces you need to use a packer the same thickness of the material you are cutting at the other end of the rail from where the materials being cut are. Otherwise as you have done here the rail will lift and move, the rails need full support along their length. Or buy some shorter rails for smaller pieces.
Also for the measurements on the boxes etc behind the seats, run a string line between the battens either end and measure to the string, you won't need to guess how much has to be taken off then.

I cringe inside as you use the saw and router on that foam core - and don't were a dust mask. Yikes! I think you wear ear plugs, I'm very keen on 3M ear muffs but some of my quieter tools I use silicon ear plugs that I use when riding the bike.
As stated below - hot glue is your friend. :^) Using sticks to mark up cut lengths as they are dimensionless.
Down the road; consider cutting out the foam core on the edges where you need to bond/attach other sheets and replace with a wood strip. That way you have a very robust wood to wood joint. Gluing to foam is going to have a poor strength.
I hear you on the dang "square" cuts. Happens mainly when I try to use a track saw and MFT table. I usually throw my hands up and use the tablesaw. I have better skills with it. Tracksaws need their own skill set and the learning curve ain't obvious.
