    I read the book about this tree many years ago. It is theorized that this particular golden spruce was able to grow so much taller than any of the others with this mutation because it was situated by the water in such a way that it received sunlight not only from above, but also reflected sunlight from below, thereby compensating for its lesser allotment of chlorophyll.

    the parallels between the story of the boy being turned into kiddk’yass because the people took from the land and this man being outraged from the logging practices and attacking a sacred tree feel very similar. if you ask me the same spirits got revenge on him and that’s why he never was seen again.

    • @IAmPattycakes
      @IAmPattycakes Год назад +43

      I definitely wish he hadn't done it, but I actually have the opposite view of the connection. The society took too much from the land, and despite being told to be more selective and cautious about what they cut down, they ignored it and kept the practice of taking too much. So they lost something that really mattered to them as a punishment for their society taking too much.

      The way I saw it he felt that it was hypocritical to praise Kiddk’yass for the message it’s story gives but then let logging practices cut countless trees, so he cut down their sacred tree to show how they cared for one tree but not hundreds, meaning that the Kiddk’yass’ message was ultimately In vain.

    • @Ramble_Jack
      @Ramble_Jack Год назад +9

      @@demetriam2408 well, it happened well over 20 years ago, and despite many more protests defending old-growth forests since then, including very recently, nothing has really changed in logging. So, I really wish his act of protest wasn't in vain. I also wish he'd lived to say his piece in court while the whole country was watching; like, that's one reason he did it, it would provoke outrage, gain attention, it would mean he'd be heard and unsustainable logging practices would be placed in the public eye and come under scrutiny. But he didn't.

It was an acacia tree in Niger that was known as the “Loneliest Tree in the World”, being over 150 kilometres away from the nearest other tree. It survived alone for 300 years by growing its roots into a subterranean lake, before tragically being killed by a drunk driver in 1973.
