From a viewer's perspective the night was a fantastic watch (providing you went into it with little bias for any of the favourites - despite being a Brisbane fan I wasn't phased who won because I didn't expect Neale to come close largely because of a pretty stellar season from a lot of the boys, particularly Dunkley) and you could argue that all the favourites could have polled way more in games they missed so to each their own; one of the irrefutably best players in the comp won and it could have gone 6-7 different ways, with each player having a crazy stat-line to back it up had they won it
If devalues the award when Neale didn't get AA or win the B&F of his club. I think only the 3rd or 4th time that's happened where Brownlow winners didn't win those other awards. Not even his club thought he was their best player.
The brownlow has been joke for the 20 or more years the fact it's meant to be biggest individual award in the game and the afl hasn't changed the voting system is ridiculous

It is put on a pedestal, but instead it should be absorbed into the AFL Awards night, and presented alongside the Leigh Matthews trophy, the Coaches Association Player of the Year and all the other awards. Don't even do a vote count, just announce 5th through to 1st like the other awards do, OR have a Round 19 onwards vote count that lasts for 20 minutes rather than the 3-hour marathon that is both interminable and torturous for the supporters and the players in contention. Bontempelli, Daicos, Petracca and Gulden were all in contention to win with one round to go, then walk home empty-handed 5 hours after they arrived. It seems cruel.
Errol “Golden Boot” Gulden was clearly BOG in he final game against Melbourne. He gets the 3 he deserved and Neale doesn’t get the 3 he didn’t deserve from earlier in the season and Errol has his first Brownlow in his third season and I’m $8,000 up having him 81-1 to win with a $100 bet. Regardless, he’s a future winner and Captain of the Bloods …
But at the same time if Neale got the 3 votes in the games he deserved too (instead of the 1 vote) then Gulden is probably 5 or 6 votes behind come the final game

Media outlets and etc. disagreeing to the Brownlow winner is similar to in soccer where the Ballon D'or and FIFA best player awards sometimes disagree. IMO Brownlow should move to a 50/50 from coaches votes and umpire votes, but that could cause controversy like in Eurovision where the general public gets 50% of the vote whilst juries get the other 50%. Many people disagree with the jury voting "ruining" the votes, a fix is to make it anonymous what the umps and coaches voted exactly. (great vid btw)
It’s sort of doesn’t give a true indication of the best, because the 4tb best player on the ground gets the same amount of votes as the worst player on the ground.
