    We're almost there! One more episode to go - Next we will be going over a TON of builds: 7 Governor builds, 4 captain builds, 1 party leader and all 4 party roles. We will also cover which wanderer companions are best to recruit AND which single nobles are best for marriage (both male and female). Whew, it's going to be a big finale!

      So I did release a guide on the best methods for leveling companions with every skill, not sure if you saw that one yet but it might have some useful stuff in there :) That's one of the few ways you can level charm - I think they get a little when they complete quests and help another noble out with battles but those are very unreliable. If you don’t want to waste your time sifting through the “N” trying to find a scout/medic/engineer/QTmaster, you can just talk with a barkeep in a tavern and ask him if he know any people of a particular skill.
    For example, if you tell him you’re looking for a scout, he will give you a name and the location of a potential companion with high scouting skill. And it costs only 2 denars.
    But it only works within borders of a kingdom you’re currently located in. So if you ask a barkeep in Batania for a scout, and there are currently no scouts in any Batanian city, he can’t help you.

    I usually level up low-level companions using Smithing - send them creating expensive polearms, so in the end I have a lot of stuff to sell and experienced companion.
    Also companions can earn money winning tournaments. Btw, governor-companions in 1.8 act as regular not-hired companions: they travel the world. When I desided to establish my own kingdom, I was surprised to find out that my governor of Jalmarys is gambling somewhere in Odokh, so I spent a couple of in-game weeks trying to catch him :)

    It's incredibly frustrating that the game doesn't just not display perks that are relevant to companions. There's this huge amount of out-of-game information that players are basically required to know, to be able to play the game "correctly". It's very frustrating. Doubly so, with how some perks (apparently?) don't even work as advertised. I still love the M&B series, but it's just so frustrating to learn all of these little details that, actually, no, the thing you thought worked this certain way _actually_ works completely differently, through no fault of your own, because of something that was not disclosed or explained in the game itself.

    @bradleystevens4618 2 года назад +1

    Damn I guess I'll just wait for the next one then. Was really hoping you'd go more into practical applications of any of this, rather than focusing so much on how to avoid paying your companions, retreating them from a battle, and some specific perks that won't work for NPCs in a specific role. Which, yeah, some of that is new info to me, but like I'm not gonna hire a companion if I'm bankrupt, the combat xp is almost always worth the small risk of companion death, and it still seems worth it to assign a medic with high medicine skill regardless of if all their perks work exactly as they appear.
    Companions are a complicated, non-transparent, and subjective part of Bannerlord. Even if it's personal opinion, going into why you make the choices you make in a campaign as someone who has done all this research, and weighing in on what's "optimal," is immensely helpful. In what situations is it better to seek out a low-level companion to grow into a role, vs a high-level one that already has great stats in a given field but will gain other stats more slowly? And how can you tell their level before talking to them and hiring them? Are there roles that are better handled by family members than by companions? Why and what are they? I guess the next video is going to cover that, but I also guessed that about this video, so idk

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 года назад +2

      I was planning on this being the final episode, but when I was making the builds to cover, the list ended up being 15 and I need to test all of them too, so it would have ballooned the video length to 30 minutes or so. The next and last episode will be the most useful one out of all of them I think. This one felt more like an entry level to companions guide, which for most experienced players probably didn't take much away from it but I wanted to be thorough since a lot of new players will be coming along soon with the full release.
      Those are all great question - low level companions are 99% of the time better for the long term since you can get further along on the perk tree. 7 attributes in the desired category is the golden number since that plus 5 focus points gets you above 275 (final perk). There is no way of knowing their level without having them in your party, but you can always savescum or look it up. In general, the more skills you see in the encyclopedia the higher level they will be. Family members are always going to be preferable because you can pick their points early on. The issue is that it can take some time before you get to use them. I will be answering a lot more of these in the next one! I have most of the work done for this already, just need to script and edit it together so maybe 2-3 days at most.

    In warband, when your companion isn't fielded you don't get their medicine or tactics skill. I know tactics was meganerfed for bannerlord to now be an autoresolve thing and not even a companion skill but does medicine function when they are off the battlefield?
    I miss old tactics :p it used to be an in battle troop differential bonus against the enemy. Don't know why they took that aspect away from it :p

    1.What is the max number of companions you can have ?

      The max companion limit is 11 for non-family members. If you include family, the number is unlimited - the it's just a matter of how fast you can make babies lol

      - and some companions are weird in that they fill multiple roles well. Golden and Falcon are two of my favorite caravan leader suffixes because they have 100 Tactics (makes them more likely to win fights when their caravans are raided). However, later on in the game, because of their high innate Leadership, they can start with the Heroic Leader perk, which gives +1 loyalty, making them excellent Aserai governors (because they always spawn as Aserai).
      Your best bet is to familiarize yourself with their stats with the information he posted on his first video in this series, cross-reference it with perks, and find companions that either innately get useful things at base... like "of the Wastes" having enough Bow ranks to both be an excellent archer commander... or to start with Discipline to be yet another great Aserai governor.

    Best uses for wanderers depend on your build.
    Low Tier builds (main characters that get in the thick of it) will max END and either CTR or VIG, so they have no room for INT or CNG.
    High Tier builds (kings/queens) will max SOC and only get one additional one (mostly END for smithing abuse, but a split to be semi-useful in many areas is also decent)
    Mid Tier builds (vasalls, mercs) COULD max INT and perhaps CNG - but that is only if they forego empire building (SOC) and fighting.
    So personally, I'd rather have wanderers with 6 INT/CNG to perform the 4 roles. The margins aren't that huge, and you open up a lot more for your main character by alleviating the massive bottle neck that are attribute points.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 года назад +1

      I agree with that for the most part, but some of the level 275 perks are extremely powerful and you need 7 attributes minimum to hit 275 :( And some of the perks scale to be huge the closer to 330 you are so sometimes it does make sense to get 10 attribute from the main character. Often times I will take the 3 intelligence skills and then let a companion handle scouting, since I can get 3 skills to 330 for the price of one attribute.
      Great feedback, you make solid points!

    • @DrZaius3141
      @DrZaius3141 2 года назад +2

      @@Strat-Guides It certainly feels good to go in with the theoretical truth that you get full value out of an attribute if you max all 3 connected skills. On second though however my personal evaluation of engineering is that it doesn't matter at all. You can "win" the siege "mini-game" either way, it's just a matter of speed.
      Medicine is tricky, because minister of health is completely bonker - but whether you have medicine 80 or 274 doesn't feel all that impactful. And given the time it takes to get full use out of MoH, it doesn't feel worth it.
      As for stewardship: I usually start by grabbing either a suitable wanderer or my spouse to stick in there and let my younger (not youngest) sibling take over once she's ready.
      The biggest issue I have with the 3 INT skills is that they level very slowly. So even if I put in early attribute points, it takes forever for them to pay off. Compare that to trading or charm where you can boost XP gain a lot faster - which leads to quicker levels, which leads to maxing your second attribute a lot faster. Compare that to maxing INT and looking at engineering still sitting at 1 after all those hours of game time.

      First, depends on party size, there is safety in numbers; second, equipment, better gear reduce fatality; third how front is your companion? I always give my companion bow so they aren't at the frontline. Even they have melee, I give them the longest and shield.

      Ouch, that's really bad luck! The death chance by default is around 2% but it can go lower if you have better armor on. I would definitely avoid sending companions to combat without armor unless you don't care if they die or not.

      So far in my latest playthrough I haven't lose my shield maiden. I didn't do reload for her at all. Here's how I did, she has middle-high tier armour (due to financial constrain); equipped with bow & arrow, big shield & one handed spear.
      She always in shield wall formation. I only order infantry to charge, in shield wall formation too, with enemy number reduced at least half.
      On top of that I also order my melee calvary to charge so they can breakup enemy formation scattering them all around, distract their attention further reducing the chance my shield maiden being targeted by multiple enemy.

      So I need to go back and double check this because I didn't write any notes about it, but I believe they still get the XP for it. If I recall, it won't show levels gained for the end battle tally, but when you look at the actual level of the character it increases. I'll double check this today but I'm pretty certain that's how it works.

      Tbh, I often make a trade off. I either go somewhat of a Smith with a little less management or straight into 6int 4 control 10 social end build. I can pick either bow or crossbow to drag up to 260 and have a 5 focus points remaining for the polearm for mounted battle. This won't go far above 200 but is more than enogh to fight. For sieges I pick a really short swing able polearm, basicly a polesword and have enogh points open to get all management perks I need. I just have to ignore putting points into charm, which I personally never seen much value in

    • @abseits_ger7274
      @abseits_ger7274 2 года назад +1

      Also short spears are also pretty usable with a shield in short range. With the spear fix mod which I find mandatory anyway. Usually I have a crafted polesword, a self made spear using the materials for the thin fine steel hewing spear and a shorter spear in case I want to go with a regular spear. Though obviously not in the same setup. For sieges I'll use 2 stacks of arrows or bolts and corresponding ranged weapon, for field battles the hewing with a shield and one stack of ranged stuff and it's weapon. After all I'm still a commander and can't just get brainless into the thick of it

      Yeah if they aren't in your army it's all lost. If the companion if with you though, you can take their gear off before they go. When you're on the loot screen, go to the top and click on the arrows to cycle through your companions. You should be able to strip them from there.
