I'm on the top side of being a beginner, starting to edge into intermediate territory. I was playing with a $20 sports store special and getting frustrated by the lack of feedback and touch. I maybe impatient, but based on your vid, I went straight to the CX14. I felt I could grow into it like a child whose shoes are a size or two too large. Well, in 2 weeks my play went through the roof. I can hold my own in 3.5-4.0 matches and although I still have my forced errors, I have so much more touch and control. Thank you for this. I really didn't want to spend months trying every paddle on the market and frustrating myself.

I’m glad to see you make the change. I got mine July 1, 2022. I did the test drive with a friend. He had both CX14 and CX11E control. I broke my Invikta and was looking for something else. First paddle I picked up was the CX14E. That was it. I played with the others but came back to the 14E. It greatly improved my accuracy and dinking. It was the softest paddle I had ever played. I felt like I was using a large spoon and throwing the ball at targets on the court.
The tape Gearbox sells is very thick. I bought it and it does a good job. I would recommend getting chalk or powder and apply over the tape because if you play indoors, it will stick. There’s a learning curve to dig one out at your feet.

I switched to this paddle about 6 weeks ago. Felt great the first time I picked it up. Paddle is really well made, generous sweet spot, great balance and awesome in hand battles. Touch, spin and control are fantastic. Obviously, paddles are a individual preference and you need to find the right one for yourself, but I encourage anyone to at least demo the CX14 (Gearbox has a great demo program).

Wow similar experience. I have been playing Recreation Pickleball for about 5 yrs now. I have gone thru 4 Prince Spectrum paddles that I loved but they lose spin and power over time. I purchase the CX14 about six months ago for the durability. However once I got use to the different feel I love this paddle. The control and being able to shape your shoots with more spin has improved my game. The power is there with a little more effort.

I have bought and returned many paddles and I keep going back to my CX14H... I love it and it is bulletproof. Meaning no scratches or edge guards falling off. To get more power I added weight to the four corners of the paddle and it has given me tremendous pop on my serves and put aways and I feel it has expanded the sweet spot a bit as well. I feel like it didn't change my touch or balance since I have it on all four corners. I keep coming back to this paddle because I play better and I feel I have quicker hands at the net. I am a big fan of this paddle

Very nice and thoughtful review. I currently use Diadem Warrior. All too often when I try new paddles, first few hits, I fall in love but the longer I play with it, that love disappears and transitions to disappointment to outright betrayal. I'm not entirely sure what's going on. Surely the problem has to be me but my hands doesn't lie. They're like an extension to my gut instinct. One of the factors when I'm demo'ing paddles is whether or not, can I get the ball to obey. Personally, I love trying different paddles. Different materials, different feel, etc. I will certainly demo Gearbox CX14 when I get a chance. Anyways, with Diadem Warrior I can't seem to separate myself from it. Sometimes I feel like it's talking to me in the middle of a rally. I guess if I want to switch to another paddle, I would have to get a divorce lawyer. LoL!

I started using that paddle this spring and yes, lots of adjustments .... going non-elongated for the first time ... figuring out whether or not to add lead for balance ... thinner grip ... less power ... more spin ... There's definitely an adjustment period ... but I have 2 in my bad and I'm sold.

Great review of the CX14, Barrett. I switched to the CX14H back in March and absolutely love it. It is truly incredible in the touch game but has plenty of power for putaways also. I'd recommend using either vinyl (electrical) tape or tennis racquet tape on the edges for added protection. I use both. I line the top with vinyl and then put tennis tape from about 2 to 10 o'clock. I also add a bit of 1/2 inch lead tape along the bottom from around the grip to just before the curve on each side and cover it with vinyl tape. I also add lead tape on the top corners as well. The lower weighting helps with hand speed for volleys and the upper weighting helps with power on drives, serves, and overheads.

This video is spot on. I have been playing with elongated paddle for 6 months now. Transition period. Incredibly consistent paddle. NOT a power paddle. I switched over from a Selkirk. Very confident with the paddle. I never feel like it's the paddle's fault when I clunk a hit. I'm not worried about dead spots.

I bought the Cx-11e control 7.8oz instead of the Cx-14e because while I do want control, I also need more power in the paddle. I also use the CRBN 13mm elongated because I am a spin player but don't tend to use my wrist as much as my arm. For me, spinning the ball with the Gearbox paddles requires more wrist than I seem to be able to do while still maintaining consistency. Gearbox paddles are great. And I may go back to my Cx-11e because of this video. Thank you.

As soon as this video started, I knew where you were going. I purchased my first GearBox three months ago after my starter paddle started going soft. I was most influenced by the technology that goes into these paddles. My GX5 8.5 Control is serving me well, for now, but the GX14H will be on order in a few months. Your review sounds like you drank the kool-aid, but I totally get it. I agree with your comments about the transition from other paddles, and I think more people would take to this paddle if they had a more positive feeling in the very beginning. However, I am happier that I don't see many GearBox paddles on the other side of the net when I play. Keep up the great reviews and instructions. By the way, I agree with the earlier comments about putting on the GB edge tape. It doesn't change the great look of the paddle and provides needed aesthetic protection (obviously, after seeing the top corners of your paddle)!

Loved the Review - it was key as I began looking for my next paddle. I ended up getting the CX14 and LOVE IT! It has such great control and feel! Thanks again for your expertise and open and honest evaluation!

Excellent choice! I've had the CX14 for two months and love it. It has a nice swing speed so it's "light" but it has a solid feel due to the carbon SST technology. I come from a tennis background so the CX14 just feels the most natural in transition (from tennis) for me at least.

  • @DonHapp

Having been a Gearbox GX6 user for several years now (and those are also quite different from "standard" paddles), the CX14 and CX14e are different animals yet again - and in a very good way! Barrett mentions that the ball stays on the paddle face "longer"... and that's pretty much one of the main differences. As much as I love my GX6 paddles, this newer version absolutely grabs the ball causing you to lift it higher on topspin shots (serves included). I can definitely clear the net higher with more spin bringing it back down inside the court. The way I know there is a difference is actually when I occasionally go back to the GX6. My game/strokes don't really change, but I hit significantly more balls into the next on drives and serves because the GX6 face doesn't grab and hold the ball lifting it up and over. Gearbox truly has something unique going on and as a tennis player these newer CX14 paddles allow me to stroke the ball in more of a tennis topspin way! Great review Garrett...

I love my Gearbox paddle and agree that their paddles are the best! I am using the CX11 8.5 gram "control" paddle - standard shape. I switched from a Selkirk paddle and the transition took about one week to effectively dink and make a third shot drop. I am now six months into using gearbox and this paddle has transformed my game; I have much more backspin and top spin and I am consistently out dinking my opponents. I now ask, "why are more pros not using gearbox?" the only answer I can come up with is Gearbox must not be focusing on sponsoring pros.
One tip you all should know about if you are worried about scuffing the top edge; use 3M or Scotch colored electrical tape as an edge guard. Not only is this tape effective in protecting the edge, it also looks cool. I chose white electrical tape and just reapply it as I damage it over time. I apply it from the side, just where it starts to turn, then all across the top to the other side where the turn starts to flatten into the side edge

After watching your review of the CX14, I checked out the GearBox review of all their paddles. Liked what I saw. Liked that the CX14 has a long handle. I've been playing with a Selkirk Vanguard Mach 6. I had been thinking that it suited my singles game better than doubles. And I had been thinking of getting a Selkirk widebody (I consider Selkirk to be a premium brand). But I decided to go with the CX14. Played it the same day it came in the mail, and it did not require getting used to. I've played both doubles and singles with it, and I feel that it has picked up my game slightly. More so in doubles. But I also think it plays well for singles. I am expecting the CX14 to raise my rating by half to one point. Yes, I'm an optimist. :-)

Thanks for the great review. Protecting the edge of Gearbox paddles has been pretty simple for me. I just put electrical tape on and change it out when it starts to get chewed up. If you use lead tape for perimeter weighting that will also provide some edge protection.

I tested the CX14 out and really loved it also, although I did feel a little less stability when blocking a strong drive at the net--not major, but noticeably less than a polymer core paddle. I then tested an Eletrum (elongated) and loved the spin and more power than the CX14. That said, I'd love to have a CX14 to use and would probably add some lead tape to the head. I am very happy with my Electrum for now. Agree, the CX14 is the softest paddle you'll ever try and plenty of spin too, great paddle!

Rather than bother you with a question, I watched your more recent videos to see if you were still using it. I realized then that you likely use the most appropriate paddle for the lesson you are giving and may only use the GB paddle when playing competitively. But, is the GB CX14 still the BEST paddle you've ever played with and are you still using it? Thanks for your videos - I learn a lot with every one!

Finally bought this paddle. If I'd hit it outside the small sweetspot I got a harsh hard feeling like hitting with a piece of wood, the ball would just die.
I got comments from people off the court claiming to hear the non-sweetspot getting hit. I emailed Gearbox and asked if the paddle breaks-in or softens from use or if there are manufacturers variants, got not reply to these questions. Returned paddle and got a Players Pickleball paddle--much better.

The CX11’s and 14’s are available in two handle sizes; 3 5/8 and 3 15/16. You can buy the larger 3 15/16 handle and make it smaller by removing the wrap grip and the wafer inserts. But to make it larger you have to add another grip or overgrip. Hope this helps.

I just got a GB C14. My other paddle is a Bobalat MNST Power, which I really love. I think it has an excellent mix of speed and power, and the heavier perimeter makes me feel like I can whip the racket more and move the ball quite well. But, I was given the Gearbox as a gift, so I need to give it a good try.
Compared to it I'd say the gearbox has:
    - slightly less power.
    - slightly more grip on the ball and excellent spin.
    - slightly less spin feel due to more center weighting.
    - Way more touch, so drops and kitchen play is way better.
    - Slightly more hand speed.
After day 1 I expect it will be my go-to for doubles, but I'm unsure which I'll use for singles. Prob the Gearbox when playing an opponent who likes to attack net and the Bobalat when I'm playing someone who play more midcourt and baseline.

Thanks for the review. I've been hearing and thinking about GB because I like the construction and all, but have been super happy with my Diadem Icon for the maneuverability in hand battles (due to it's thinness), pop, and unique rubbery surface for extra grip and spin (I've gotten way more service aces with topspin serves than I have with my icon compared to all my previous paddles--and I'm not doing any spinning with my tossing hand). People who have tried my Icon said it reminds them of a gearbox, so I may have to try one one of these days. I still would like to try one of their "power" models to compare with the C14 since you said this was a "softer" paddle, so maybe I can get to one of their demo days and see. Thanks again for your review!

I use a cx14e because I like the elongated shape. It first I loved it. Then I started to notice the lack of power more. Then I added lead tape to the head. Got some power back, but I didn't like the way it felt. Then I moved 5" of lead tape to both sides from the top handle around to just around the curve. Now I feel like I have a good balance. I often wonder what playing with a more traditional paddle would be like, but I really like the one I have. I also bought a 2nd hand cx11e 8.5 power and I use that sometimes too. It has noticeably more pop, but a similar overall feel.
With both Engage and Selkirk coming out with borderless paddles, I think Gearbox really missed a marketing opportunity to gain more market share...they love their technology, but as a business, they missed a chance to hold a very unique place in the market.

I haven't put any tape on the edges - is that really necessary? Yeah, they get scuffed up a bit - but am I likely to get carbon fiber splinters or something if I don't tape?

I feel that the Quad is easier to wield at the NVZ than the elongated, and the elongated paddle is actually the same length only more narrow. I chose the CX 11 quad control 8.5 . I have recently added lead tape to the top for stability. It weighs in at 9.3 oz. I understand what the newest version, hyperspin? I believe it's called has a lot of grit on the face. Watch the pickelball studio spin test video. Gearbox tested separately was in the low top ten. The cx14 h at about 1650rpm and the e model at around 1500. And the Selkirk labs vanguard 003 wasn’t tested for this video, but came in at 2000rpm. Be careful. Their hyper flex spin technology is flawed. The paddle is supposed to bend around the ball holding it longer to generate spin. Fact is, the ball touches the paddle for a split second. Without a T700 carbon molded face, what’s grabbing the bell to create spin.

Your paddle reviews are interesting. I'm an old tennis teacher and coach, playing the last six months with the Franklin Ben Johns Signature. "Leaded up" from the shoulders down to the grip to get rid of the "dead spot" between the sweet spot and the grip.
I like the pop and feel of this paddle. I do wish it provided a bit more spin, but I don't like the idea of trying a dozen different paddles.

The Diadem is everything I could want in a paddle as far as touch, power, and spin combined. Much like your affinity for the Prince Response, I don't see myself leaving the Warrior anytime soon. My top spin is so good now and I just naturally developed a roll at the net because the way this paddle hold on to the ball. I tell people it's like and extension of your hand with this thing! The lighter weight allows for a quicker response at the kitchen line (had to add a little lead tape around the perimeter) and the spin exceeds that of the Electrum!!
