Vapour Permeable Wrap/Membrane Installation. (IT’S NOT FOIL SARKING!)

  • The correct way to install a Vapour permeable or vapour impermeable wrap, for air tightness to properly leverage the products that are being installed. Some installers are used to installing foil sarking which are not installed in an air tight fashion. Proctor, Siga, Proclima membranes and other high quality membranes designed to be installed for air tightness are installed very differently.
    Air tight membranes are designed to be installed completely air tight, so we need to install them like that.

    Could you do a full install video on a small cubby house or something? just a video that shows how to do doors, windows, studs, interior and exterior wraps. They would be no need to show how others do it wrong like in this video, just show how you do it right.

    Those batts in the walls need to be flush it needs to be thicker or not squashed in , otherwise it will allow air movement in the walls .

    I live in the UK and am about to build an insulated garden room. I get the point about the internal membrane being continuous with no holes. I had intended to nail match board (timber) on top of the vapour membrane to be the internal finish. Are you saying this is a bad thing to do? What is your advise for the internal finish?

    Do you have any retrofit ideas for insulating and making airtight the attic space of a terracotta tile roof without sarking? Any way that avoids removing the tiles?

      Interesting question. Its a tough one. I’ll think about that one.

    How do we then attach the internal cladding/gyprock to the studs without puncturing the membrane?

    why not use caulk/glue/sealant on each stud rather than twine tape ? also when you put your leash down for your plaster you must nail that in and make holes in that sign membrane !

    Why do you install internally? As it’s permeable, won’t hot air from the inside condense with the cold surface and permeate into the cavity and cause mould?

    • @ecoevo

      There are vapour barrier wraps and vapour permeable wrap. In colder climates a vapour barrier wrap can be installed on the inside of the insulation, and normally a services cavity complements this detail.

      Max Young I’m glad i asked the question. You need a vapour impermeable barrier on the outside of the wall system, and you need it to be your best air barrier. Contact us for me information..

    How do you do the plumbing and electrical

    • @ecoevo
      @ecoevo  Год назад

      The "TEXTBOOK " solution is the provision of a services cavity by battening over the wrap. It there is limited space (and budget), the plumbing will be run conventionally and all electrical should be in conduits before the installation of the wrap. The bay of stud where there will be plumbing outlets or electrical switches and outlets should have a sheet of plywood or OSB fixing on the outdoor side, all internal corners/junctions should be caulked; the wrap will be cut open at these bays. The wrap opening should be tape sealed to the studs. this way, the continuity of the air barrier can be maintained.

      That’s the reason, in these types of vapour retarder barrier installations, a services cavity is introduced.
