    This video shows the repair of an XBOX One S console which has no power. It does have a good, working power supply (PSU) so what gives? Here we check the board over, find a 12v rail short and then go ahead to examine the components in the APU power supply circuit where we find an issue which is stopping our console from powering up.
    The replacement MOSFETs required are Toshiba TPN8R903NL,LQ.

    8 months ago i lost my xbox 1. I quickly replaced tee power supply with a new one but the console did not turn on. I got a donner xbox 1s from a friend. Today i found ur video armed with a multimeter and your video, tested all 3 regulators. 1 was faulty. I replaced the faulty one and the xbox worked. Thanks a million brother. Very precise tutorial and to the point.

    Amazing video. I watched it and believe it or not the Xbox I bought had an identical issue. Another commenter put the link on for the replacement chips, I got 30 for £5 next day delivery. Used my dads hot air rework tool. Repaired entirely from chips arriving (ok motherboard was already out) to running in less than 5 minutes.
    Thank you so much. You’re awesome. Keep up the good work.

    Thank you for posting this particular method of troubleshooting MOSFETs in circuit... I have a DUAL processor Xeon system with 6 phases for each CPU, and 2 MOSFETS per phase (total of 24 MOSFETS). I tried several different tests, but YOUR method enabled me to identify the exact MOSFET causing a short to ground. In hindsight, this is the most sensible test, because it exploits the basic theory behind a properly functioning FET.

    Excellent video, thank you very much, Andrew. Got a console in with the same issue - one of these mosfets blew (lane to the right of the one in the video) and took one of the capacitors with it. I'd had not been able to identify the issue without your video!
    My hot air station doesn't seem to have enough power/airflow to remove the current one, so I've ordered something with a bit more grunt. Fingers crossed the surge hasn't taken anything else with it, as I've never worked with larger surface mount chips before. Wish me luck!

    Ordered 9 of these mosfets just after watching this video for a repair I have coming in tomorrow, cheap enough so if the XBOX One S that I am receiving tomorrow isn't fixed with these then it's no big loss.
    Thanks for making these videos.
    Edit: turns out it was not one of the mosfets, 12V to ground short stayed even with removing all 3, most likely a Southbridge or APU issue which now isn't really worth fixing.

    • @bobapthorpe
      @bobapthorpe 5 лет назад +6

      It can be difficult to trace circuits just by following the traces on the board; what helps me is understanding a bit about the high-level function blocks of a circuit or board (power, video, radios, controllers, CPU/memory) and the parts that you find in each. The easy (unhelpful) answer is experience, which is true but doesn't help someone starting out. Every subsystem needs power and there's a definite order in which the subsystems get power and start up (e.g. video & wifi will come up after the CPU). You get clues by the overall system behavior (does the fan spin? do you get lights on the board?) which helps isolate the high-level functions which aren't working so you check them and their dependencies. Hopefully this lets you isolate the possible failures to a few sections of the board and you can do a visual inspection for burnt/abused components before you start probing pins. Look for obvious problems; what's obvious to you will come with experience but everyone starts at the beginning and there's no substitute for getting your hands dirty :)
      There's a lot of detail to take in but that's why I watch people like Andrew & Louis Rossman. It's partly to pick up on their experience with specific hardware but mostly to understand the logic they use when diagnosing problems.

    Is there a way to test the internal power supply without taking it apart? When I plug in the power cable there is a click (spark) but I cannot see any fan movement. Would the console still charge a usb device if it had a defective part other than the power supply... Do you know what the voltage should read if I remove the power supply, plug it into the mains and use a multimeter

    • @gmaninthusa
      @gmaninthusa 5 лет назад +3

      power supply should give 12V. If there's a short on the APU power rail, it will likely trip the overcurrent protection on the PSU and cause it to shut down. As for the click sound, I'm guessing that would be the overcurrent protection kicking in. Mine did the same thing until replacing the faulty power rail mosfet on my One S board.

    Excellent video! I narrowed down my no power issue thanks to this. I have a board with a blown IC labeled Q9E1 just to the left of the MOSFET that you replaced (6:40). I'm guessing it's a 12V regulator or some other FET? I also get a short across the MOSFET gate so I'll be replacing that as well. Do you think it would be worth while replacing the PWM controller while I've got it on the operating table or would I be pushing my luck going after all 3 at once? I've replaced plenty of chips that size and smaller, my hands are pretty steady, but I know some are prone to pads lifting more so than others. Easy on the heat I guess... haha

      Hey, have similar issue with these IC that you mentioned.. did you replaced it? Did it helped? because I have shorts on all three of these IC and all the capacitors behind them and below the main chip.. not sure if only these IC's are affected or the main chip is damaged as well..

    Love all your videos. You are my last and first stop when I am stumped. So if a system has good power supply and no short to ground that would normally be the power controll IC? Just looking for a starting point for testing.

    Hi Andrew, excellent videos. I have the beeps once and turns off problem on the xbox one s. The LED doesn't light but there is some power going in albeit briefly. I've checked everything you point on this and cant find an issue. Any idea where I should look now? I'm stuck. Thanks in advance.

    Thank you so much. My main general question is why on earth did this "gate" go wrong in the first place? Heat? excessive use? or what?

    Hello Andrew, great video!.
    I have a similar problem on my XBox One S, but in my case there is no sound at all when powering it on.
    I checked if there is a short on the power pins, but there isn't.
    I also check all three of the mosfets, but they seem to be fine as well.
    I just found that all the capacitors under the APU are shorted, so I think in this intance the problem is the APU itself, right?

    I'm learning and inspired soo much from yourself, tronixfix and my mate vince I've actually invested in gear I. E solder station, helping hand, Multimeter etc that I've decided to take on a mini project myself, a neighbours a xbox one (original) with a simular issue.
    Thought I might of be the power brick but the capacitors looked OK, the xbox board on the otherhand different story
    Apu maybe fried due to very little thermal paste left on it. Maybe a gonna
    Will test mosfets

      An APU isn't going to fry due to lack of thermal compound. Modern CPU's/APUs/GPUs are all really good with thermal throttling or just shutting down in extreme cases.

    Hello sir, what a magnificent video. I need to ask probably a dumb question when you check the MOSFETs do you have power to the board? If so how?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  2 года назад

      No - you don't need power applied to the board.

    Hi, firstly brilliant video.
    I have a problem where Xbox One S starts and switches off after 6 seconds.
    I have tested the first FET (furthest left) and this appears to not give a reading on either probe arrangement. also has continuity to ground on that 1st pin.
    If I change this FET should the fault disappear or would you have thought this is caused by APU or a more serious fault.
    Thanks
