    These pools work with nature to provide safe bathing water without the use of chemicals.
    Bill made this pool for around £6,000. A fraction (1/10) of the cost of a commercial installation. The decking and paved areas were and additional cost. Bill bought David Pagan Butler's DVD (Natural Swimming Pools - a guide to building and designing your own) and Organic Pools DIY Manual. He also attended one of David's courses.

      with the plants providing extra oxygen thus the algae stays away, besides the black color liner also prohibits algae growth while providing more warmth

  • @RIPPER334
    @RIPPER334 7 лет назад +409

    Looks like a flooded backyard... I don't understand why this is somehow better than a regular pool. It certainly wasn't any cheaper... Is it because it doesn't have a filter? Who wants to swim in unfiltered water... and fight mosquitos. You could have just dug a pond for 1/3rd less money, and been swimming in the same dirty water...
    And the only thing "organic" about it, is the plants growing around the edge... seems like a silly waste.

    • @sophi-vive
      @sophi-vive 7 лет назад +14

      RIPPER334 the plants do the filtering

    • @youknowmetoowell1516
      @youknowmetoowell1516 7 лет назад +42

      David Ayers do they kill bacteria and parasites?

    • @RIPPER334
      @RIPPER334 7 лет назад +24

      David Ayers No... no.
      While some plants CAN absorb (and adsorb) SOME bacteria, and even a few heavy metals, these are typically leached fairly quickly back into the water colum. So using the term "filter" would be extremely loose in this example.
      Mostly what aquatic plants WILL do, is take excess nutrients from the water (even then, only what they need to grow), and as a result of this nutrient reduction, algae is starved... and you have clearer "looking" water. Again... using that term loosely.
      Plants won't do anything for parasites... they've never stopped a case of dysentery or foot rot... and the money you save on pool filter sand, you'll quickly spend on mosquito spray!
      Basically, unless you are a fish benefiting from a balanced nitrogen cycle, and the added oxygen in the water, plants aren't doing much for funky, mostly stagnant water... (which this will become without proper stratification)... especially in the few numbers planted around this flooded backyard.
      This is just another go-green money grab...

    Won't the wood rot over time? And what about mosquitoes and such? I know the water isn't stagnate but still it would be considered a pond no?

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 10 лет назад +8

      Yes, but the integrity of the wood will be maintained for years and years, and if you're that worried, the lining can tear, the cement and mortar can crack, etc. etc.
      And mosquitos require stagnant water to breed, which is why the problem exists. This body of water is circulating. Mosquitos won't be a huge problem.
      Plus mosquitos don't live everywhere, so where this guy lives is also a factor.

    • @Joshua79C
      @Joshua79C 6 лет назад

      Republic of Texas, actually Italy uses Piles it sit on, not just beams, and only sinking due to the wood deteriorating due to the movement of the buildings and people walking rhythm, woods does not live forever underwater where aquatic wood borers persist and is only 'sinking' due to tides thus why they have built those barriers to protect it sometime into the future.
      They really should look at replacing those piles with carbon/dyneema/fiberglass/kevlar composite piles as they are impervious to rust unlike steel, wood borers and rot like wood, or washout and rust deterioration like reinforced concrete. But that would be a vast and very highly costly operation

  • @alexl6433

    • @Joshua79C

      ask about whether a white or black/green plastic tank is better, you will find the white tank is an algae farm, black is a good passive heating system to warm the water along with a medium to dark green or even blue also help keep algae at bay along with the plants providing natural algae killing oxygen into the water as well

    • @ewebb16
      @ewebb16 10 лет назад +23

      Sustainably harvested wood is actually good for the environment, it ties up carbon into a permanent fixture rather than letting it fly around in the air. It's a big assumption to think that wood is from Brazil, oak doesn't even grow in Brazil.
      Sure it's a fair bit of plastic but compare that to a huge fibreglass and plastic shell and all the necessary filtration equipment and chemicals and it is definitely more natural than a normal pool.

    • @3887douglas
      @3887douglas 9 лет назад +6

      I totally agree! There's never been a child worth $7,000! And ALL drownings only happen to stupid, incompetent parents. Besides, a pool just looks better with a poor, dead baby floating in it.
      IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD A FENCE, YOU CAN'T AFFORD A POOL. DROWNINGS KILL MORE CHILDREN IN FLORIDA THAN CARS, GUNS AND POISONS COMBINED.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 9 лет назад +10

      3887douglas
      Don't try to blame others because of your failure to look after your children. You neglected the child, leading to their death. The people with the pool are innocents, in fact, they're victims. They now have to go the rest of their lives knowing a child drowned in their pool, and that's all because you just weren't good enough.
      Your weakness and neglect killed a child and likely traumatized other human beings. What if the family with a pool had a kid, and that kid was the one who found your drowned child?
      Don't try to displace blame. The world shouldn't have to safeguard itself for your child, you should safeguard your child until they're capable of managing their own safety.

      never myself heard of or read about anyone getting amoeba in such a pool/pond design, however said amoeba love to swim and thrive and endanger humans in public natural bodies of water and only a few dozen cases of non-survivors, also unless there is a food source such as insects then those critters are not going to be an issue if you neglect to care for and remove such issues and it will lead to aquatic snakes along with croc and gator feasting on them and making home as long as they have a food source to feast on.
      I have enjoy swims in a few properly maintained nsp.

      The plants provide oxygen which is what keeps algae at bay, ever seen a pond using those floating fountains? those fountains are helping oxygenate and thus reduce to the point of elimination of algae. the plants, limestone gravel shown being added, along with charcoal and even a uv and or ultrasonic filters help prevent it much like typical pools but without the salt filter or chemicals to treat it, the plants providing additional oxygen and pumps moving the water eliminate algae aong with deterring mosquitos which prefer standing water

      I have seen blue and green ocean waters in the tropics and even once of the 5 great lakes is blue and often so crystal clear you can see to he bottom as some sunken ship images shown proves this. Yet you still say its not clear despite its black due to the liner color? I can see myself with Rx glasses how clear it is.

    To the builders: Google "Naegleria fowleri".

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 10 лет назад

      To the paranoid: Infections of Naegleria fowleri are extremely rare. While there is a risk, when compared to the number of incidences where people swim in fresh water bodies (read: extremely common), the risk is almost non-existent.
      The risk is further minimized the cooler your climate. The majority of cases of infection of Naegleria fowleri occur in warmer regions.

    • @MollyHJohns
      @MollyHJohns 8 месяцев назад

      I learned from other similar natural pool builders. They either breed small fish, let bats or dragonflies live around the pool, or cultivate insect-repelling and water purifying plants in the shallow areas around the pool. Also the extra filters will always run the water through the pump and so this kind of build isn't considered stagnant water pond at all. It is still a pool. And the 'natural' part doesn't really means all natural or untreated obviously; just probably using unchlorinated water so plants and other water-dependent animals can live in it quite well if included in the plan.

      you can do this with salt water

    • @Joshua79C
      @Joshua79C 6 лет назад

      I myself prefer non salty water, rather not be feeling sticky after a good long (1 hour or so) swim like I often did after swimming in the actual ocean. Plus the salt is still chlorine aka chemical in nature and yes you can do a natural salt water pool like this with salt water plants.
