  • This video is from Coltrane's first trip overseas, touring as a member of one of Miles Davis's first great quintets. The footage was taken on March 28, 1960 in Düsseldorf, West Germany, a night Miles Davis sat out.

      Absolutely. Unfortunate that so many people get caught.up in the no other piano player except Bill Evans mindset.

      Imo, Kelly is greatly underrated. Supremely sensitive [he was quoted in, I think, liner notes as saying he would be more than satisfied only to comp] but also a lyrical and inventive improviser with a bluesy feel. Between Evans, Peterson, or Tyner, it's in WK that I find most to admire.

    So first Kelly kicks me in the gut with that stunning piano solo...then Coltrane blows me a way and goes off in a way that only Coltrane could ever do it, leaving my jaw on the damn floor...and then Stan Getz with his perfect tone and intonation just tears my heart clean out of my chest. This is easily one of the greatest things I've ever seen and heard.

      Jan Berings it’s not behind you! I’m a teenager and have grown up with a musician for a mother. She inspired me to play. You can inspire your kids, grand kids, heck, even your neighbors, to play this wonderful music.

    This was the golden age of jazz. It will never be repeated as there will never be the Society necessary to produce these geniuses. Best we can do is form clubs with like minded guys to keep alive these golden days as best we can.

    This is awesome! Trane and Getz together with THIS rhythm section! Jazz heaven! Love the way the lights are so low that the musicians seem almost silhouetted. Bravo!

    So beautifully gorgeous....that words can't describe how sublime it all is. The playing is truly phenomenal and the camera work is fabulous.
    The undercutting of Wynton Kelly & Paul Chambers is magic.
    John Coltrane & Stan Getz's solos are breathtaking! artistry of this calibre will never be seen again.

    You have to remember that WK didn't like to soloing at all. He was forced by Miles, among others to do so. A lesson to bunch of clowns who think they got something to say.

    Man, I love them all dearly but Kelly's solo is simply arresting and stunning. I'm tired of Autumn Leaves but that's of the few renditions of it that doesn't sound cheesy and cliché as most tend to.

      (I'm pretty sure) the II-V back to the top there is major. Trane is playing the 9 of the II chord. Nothing wrong happened there.

    I hate the sound of saxophone. Something is always stuck in it. Unnatural sound of Metal and wood. It's Always uncomfortable to listen to.. I really love the piano of Mr. Wynton Kelly anyway
