A fire is around 600c? Does anyone know how much stone that heat will penetrate? Basically, if you have a foot and a half to two-foot firebox, how much stone around it would stop that heat from getting to walls?

Jonathon Baker Actually if you collect most of the stone and taught yourself how to do brick and mortar the cost wouldn’t be bad and actually doing the work is easy it just takes time!

No reason to think these designs are that expensive. Compared to the rest of the cost of a decent house, these fireplaces aren't bad at all.

@@tipstoes1079 You would have to study. Throwing a stone fireplace in a place is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, and a huge waste of time if you get it wrong. The wrong depth of stone and your walls will smoke.
