Lynyrd Skynyrd (/ˌlɛnərd ˈskɪnərd/ LEN-ərd SKIN-ərd)[2] is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida. The group originally formed as My Backyard in 1964 and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar) and Bob Burns (drums). The band spent five years touring small venues under various names and with several lineup changes before deciding on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969. The band released its first album in 1973, having settled on a lineup that included bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell and guitarist Ed King. Burns left and was replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1974. King left in 1975 and was replaced by Steve Gaines in 1976. At the height of their fame in the 1970s, the band popularized the Southern rock genre with songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". After releasing five studio albums and one live album, the band's career was abruptly halted on October 20, 1977, when their chartered airplane crashed, killing Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, and seriously injuring the rest of the band.
Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant as lead vocalist. They continue to tour and record with co-founder Rossington (the band's sole continuous member), Johnny Van Zant, and Rickey Medlocke, who first wrote and recorded with the band from 1971 to 1972 before his return in 1996. In January 2018, Lynyrd Skynyrd announced its farewell tour, and continue touring as of October 2019. Members are also working on their fifteenth album.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lynyrd Skynyrd No. 95 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006. To date, the band has sold more than 28 million records in the United States.
Following a performance at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 20, 1977, the band boarded a chartered Convair CV-240 bound for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they were scheduled to appear at LSU the following night. After running out of fuel, the pilots attempted an emergency landing before crashing in a heavily forested area five miles northeast of Gillsburg, Mississippi. Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, along with backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray were killed on impact. Other band members (Collins, Rossington, Wilkeson, Powell, Pyle, and Hawkins), tour manager Ron Eckerman, and several road crew members suffered serious injuries.
The accident came just three days after the release of Street Survivors. Following the crash and the ensuing press, Street Survivors became the band's second platinum album and reached No. 5 on the U.S. album chart. The single "What's Your Name" reached No. 13 on the single charts in 1978. The original cover sleeve for Street Survivors had featured a photograph of the band amid flames, with Steve Gaines nearly obscured by fire. Out of respect for the deceased (and at the request of Teresa Gaines, Steve's widow), MCA Records withdrew the original cover and replaced it with the album's back photo, a similar image of the band against a simple black background. However, the group would restore the original image for the 30th anniversary deluxe edition of the album.[citation needed]
Lynyrd Skynyrd disbanded after the tragedy, reuniting only on one occasion to perform an instrumental version of "Free Bird" at Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jam V in January 1979. Collins, Rossington, Powell, and Pyle were joined by Daniels and members of his band. Leon Wilkeson, who was still undergoing physical therapy for his badly broken left arm, was in attendance, along with Judy Van Zant, Teresa Gaines, JoJo Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins.

This was such a shocking tragedy. Music fans were just stunned. My friends and I danced to Gimme Three Steps every time the DJ played it. One of our favorite memories. I still "crank it up" even in the car to this day. Love their music. RIP to all we lost that fateful day. Thank you for the beautiful tribute, Scott.

Well... myself I'm 61 and I smile and slap my knee and tap my toes with abandon and sing to the top of my lungs. I'm gonna enjoy the music and celebrate the greatest band there ever was or ever will be while I still can. You should try doing the same brotha. The music doesn't bring a tear to my eye but things like this surely do

My dad had been a stagehand for the local venues in our city- he has so many backstage passes and tickets from different bands of those days in a scrapbook... but his most prized is by far his Lynyrd Skynryd stage pass.
He got to hang out in their room with them and got offered to do a line... he was 17 😂
He beams with pride whenever he talks about it.
Singing "Gimme three steps" with my dad at the top of our lungs while driving to the store will always be a loved memory ❤ Thanks for another great video, Scott!

Lynyrd Skynyrd one of the best of rock and roll bands that kept going even after a really bad tragedy. Sorry to say that rock and roll is dead that there will never be a band with their southern blues rock and roll sound! But its great that their recordings exist for all to listen to and documentaries to show the heart of the band!

Gene Odem has talked about the crash. While yes Ronnie was asleep and woken up, Gene was the one who placed him quickly into a seat and got his seat belt buckled. Was not till after the crash and during the investigation that Gene saw that the seat belt to which was supposedly Ronnie's, was not cut like the rest but was unbuckled. Because of that, Gene believed that while he tried running back his own seat, Ronnie unbuckled himself.

The notion that Lynyrd Skynyrd is
" Southern Rock" is offensive - it was offensive to Ronnie - Lynyrd Skynyrd was music - not Rock , not Country - it was the blood ,sweat and the tears of a group of blue eyed souls - it was truly Americana

Such a tragedy, they were just hitting their peak when this plane crash happened. I'm a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd & it's a shame this happened they were, like I said just hitting their peak when this happened. So sad man. RIP to the original band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines & Cassie Gaines, Dean Arthur Kilpatrick who died in the crash 🙏🕊️🕊️. It really was preventable, same with the Richie Valens Crash, Patsy Cline Crash, The Aaliyah Houghton Crash etc. It is so frustrating because if they took the proper safety precautions this would have been prevented. Lynyrd Skynyrd Were The Embodiment Of Southern Rock. Great Video Scott 👌

A documentary was made shortly before Ed King passed away, called If I Leave Here Tomorrow, and it’s a must-see for Skynyrd fans! It’s just recently gone up on Netflix from what I understand. Another must-see is the movie the band’s drummer, Artimus Pyle, made last year, called Street Survivors. It was named after their last album. Very well done movies!

I know that The February 3, 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson is known as the day the music died but to a true southerner (born and raised) the day the music died was October 20, 1977…. I’ve seen the modern band that call themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd and they are good but their music really doesn’t compare to those guys and gal…. Good stuff and as always thanks for sharing… P.S. don’t worry about getting eaten by gators in the south… They think Canadians taste funny lmao

This was real special for me to see. Never seen it. Tuesday's gone is my favorite song. I was living in Ft. Lauderdale in 1977, there last album street survivors came out and I bought it the day it did Oct 17, 1977. There plane crashed Oct 20th, 1977. On Oct 22nd they pulled the album off the shelves and replaced with a different cover. I still have that album, sealed. I never opened it, to painful. Artimus Pyle after the plane crash walked to the closest farm house before help arrived, the farmer thought he was a crazed drugged out hippie and shot him in the shoulder. There is so much to this story...thank you Scott, I would have never made it to the crash site.

Wonderful vlog Scott. Just by watching this video you can feel the sadness as you pan your camera around the area. Even though no one can make it to the actual crash site (which is now impossible to get to due to the area being overgrown out in the middle of a pasture) I had watched a video where the landowners had took a crew out within a few hundred yards of where the plane actually went down and I remember the landowner pointing out in the area of the crash which is now overrun with more trees that have grown over the years. So I believe that's why the memorial is where it's at. Anyways thanks again for this vlog and everything that you do to keep us entertained. Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd! 🖤 May all the crash victims and the other members that have passed rest in eternal peace

Enjoying your video on Lynyrd Skynyrd.
If you have time and since you're in that area, head on over to Dekalb Texas and visit the place where on New Year's Eve 1985, Rick Nelson and his band died when their plane caught fire in mid-flight and crash landed in a field.
The pilots climbed out the cockpit windows and left the security door locked trapping Rick, his fiancée and his band in the passenger area leaving them to burn alive.
The plane used to belong to Jerry Lee Lewis and their story is similar to the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash story.
Band members hated to fly on that plane and had premonitions of dying on that plane.
I understand that the town has the tail section in a museum.

Great video Scott. I’m honored to own a guitar signed by all of the original members. I’m gonna try to take that guitar to the monument and take some pictures with the guitar. Rip to all the original members and those who died on that plane. They are all together now.

Free 🐦 fly was the last hit before going on the jet plane along with patsy cline its very tragic. When I was little I remembered asking my mom if they were still alive but when she said no I started crying because there voices were so classic I can't imagine being in that situation knowing that it's going to be the final time there going to be living on earth
