Diary Of a Madman was w/o a doubt Randy's masterpiece. I first heard it in 82 at the age of 7 and started learning the guitar at 12.It's been 35yrs now and have played on numerous stages with many great musicians during that time .... all because of Randy Rhoads and that song. He will forever be my musical mentor in spirit.

Saw Rhoades shortly before the crash. Feb of 1982, in Birmingham, Alabama. I was blown AWAY by his playing, as I'd already seen Van Halen twice at that point. He death was a true loss, for everyone.

“I owe my career to him,” Ozzy Osbourne on Randy Rhodes. Randy was way before his time in his guitar talent. He was storm in music and will forever be remembered for his talent and his spirit. Thanks for telling his story. (I heard at one point Randy's Mom (before she passed) had his music playing at the mosselium.)

Randy was dedicated beyond belief. I often wonder how far he could have gone in terms of growing his natural talent as he really was something else. At the end of the day it’s a tragic waste of life that could and should have been avoided . I know Don has never recovered

Exactly. It's a tragic loss. The pilot was wasted and took out innocent people for no reason. He could have crashed the plane alone but murdered people that had nothing to do with his personal life. Completely insane.

This was such a shock when it happened. I had seen Randy on the previous tour for Blizzard. I remember it like it was yesterday. I happened to meet Ozzy briefly on the Bark at the Moon tour. We chatted about Randy. Someone had a boom box and was playing a live show recorded in Montreal in 81. Ozzy said, "That's Randy!". He mentioned that he was putting the Tribute album together. The sadness in his eyes when he spoke about him was unmistakable. Thanks for your efforts brother! 💓

What a senseless tragedy. As a mother I hope it gave Randy’s Mom a bit of comfort knowing that one of his last thoughts was of getting photographs for her. Yet again as a Mom I am also sure the absolute angry pain she must of went through knowing his death was so senseless. He died in attempt trying to wrestle that plane away from the tour bus.
Thank you Scott for your diligence in taking us with you and getting the complete story. RIP Randy and his Mom.

That photograph was taken by Paul Natkin, in my opinion the greatest photograph of Randy and Ozzy ever ! I was very fortunate I met Randy when I was 14 at stabler arena in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. When they were on the blizzard of Oz tour and I took two great shots using Kodak Kodachrome 64 slide film of Randy outside when he was signing autographs outside the tour bus and I still have those photographs today and I'm currently 55 years old. Oh I also failed to mention that day while I was standing there Randy reached into his pocket and handed me a guitar pick that was in his pocket and gave it to me! today my son has that pic, and it was a Gibson pic dark maroon.

I saw him a short time after this - Oz was not inspired - he sang and poured a few buckets of water on the front rows - Cardinal Stadium -
      Louisville KY - I knew
      he wasn't right - he
wasn't drunk or f-d up but when the set list was completed - he jumped in a golf cart and it was over -
People weren't happy - and everyone stood waiting for an encore - I told my friends - " He's done - we might as well beat the traffic " On way home my buddy's girlfriend said " He's still sad " - I was thinking the same thing

    • @mbass718

@@scottcastro9383They should have paused it for longer to give time for the fans to grieve. As well as they should have given time for Brad Gillis to be ready to join the tour. Bernie Torme was a decent Gtr player but nowhere near the level of Randy. I saw the Show at MSG and it was the saddest bummer of a show that I've ever seen. I still wish I never went. Brad Gillis to this day is still the best Gtr player who had to fill Randy's shoes. Next to Jake E Lee. The one show that helped me get over the loss was the Speak of the devil show at the old Ritz here in NY. That was phenomenal and I'd have to say Brad stole the show he was so great.

Bless your heart, Scott, I was hoping you’d cover Randy & you did. You’re always ahead of us. 🙂 He wasn’t the normal rock band lead guitarist - wasn’t into drugs, heavy drinking, partying. I always think of him as a ‘golden child.’ He wasn’t perfect, but was intelligent & had a good head on his shoulders. Had plans beyond the rock scene for his future. I always felt bad for him that his father left the family before Randy turned 2 years old & have wondered if that led him to teaching young kids music lessons. His resting place is lovely, it does my heart good to know his mother is there with him. This one & your coverage of Shannon Hoon are special for me. If you haven’t already, please consider covering Stevie Ray Vaughan - another beautiful soul. Thank you for this one, & thank you again for being so respectful of your subjects.💜

I didn't really get into Randy until the Tribute album came out. Yeah I'd hear Crazy Train on the radio and thought it was a cool song, but I was more of an Eddie Van Halen fan and didn't give any other guitar players much thought. But one night I had a dream that I walked into my living room, and sitting there on the couch, his head partially obscured by the lamp, was Randy Rhoads. He looked up at me and said "Hey what's up?". Probably a year or so later, when Tribute came out (1987?) I bought the album and when I listened to the studio outtakes for the song "Dee", I heard Randy's voice and was floored. It was exactly the same as the voice in my dream. Up until hearing it on the Tribute album, I had never heard Randy's voice.

Been there a few times. Always pay tribute to Randy and his mom. Ozzy felt so guilty about Randys death because he promised his mom he would make sure nothing would happen to him. I also paid a visit to Musonia in October 2021 and met Kelle Rhoads. Very nice guy and he gave us a tour of the school. I actually touched the amps Randy played in Quiet Riot. Side note- Wyatt Earp's brother Bill is buried there too.

I share his music with every soul i know. My children and grandchildren. I was deeply touched when Ozzy and Jack listened to old tapes captured during one their Ozzy and Jack tours- best show ever! Ozzy honored Randy by including him in his Ordinary Man video. Ozzy clearly still mourns his loss. I do too. I know Ozzy had a lot to do with his resting place. My first V guitar was a Jackson Rhoads. That led me to an obsession with them. While Im not into Ozzy per se, its a treat anytime someone digs up Randy's isolated tracks or any off-footage of him performing. His technique is so unbelievably...clean. Just one of the most precise guitarists while having emotion and soul drip from every note. Theres no telling what that bus driver cost the world that day.

I was absolutely devastated when I heard the news of the crash and Randy's death. Years earlier a friend and I had shared a lunch table with Randy and one of his friends at a crowded Burger King in Hollywood, waiting for the next tour time at Universal Studios. I had no idea who he was at that time. Randy had a guitar case with him that had a black Gibson SG in it that he said he had just purchased at a pawn shop. A good while later after I had returned home to Ohio, I learned who Randy was and a little about Quiet Riot. Randy was now the guitarest for Ozzy and I paid much more attention to him. I couldn't believe I had met him at that Burger King a few years earlier. This accident was definitely tradgic and senseless. A great video here Scott!!!

Watched many vids of this incident over the years but this one is the best.Probably because you are a pop music fan and not a musician.Totally fresh viewpoint.Did you quote any of the books that are out there in the world about this accident? The bassist rudy sarzo has a book about it.FUN FACT..Ritchie Blackmore from rainbow/deep purple was touring the us and when in tn they had to change busses and drivers because the driver wanted to go on vacation. When ritchie saw the new driver ritchie ''saw his black aura'' and offered to pay the original driver double to keep him. That driver was the pilot of the plane.

Very VERY Cool video Scott I love how you were able to tie the two locations together and also seeing all the familiar locations in San Bernardino such as driving through the Cajon Pass and even the cemetery its self. There is A Hospital in the background at the grave site where my Son Ryan and also Holly was born at. Ozzy would for many years come to Randys grave site for either his birthday or the day he died i forget which. Thanks for sharing this one with us buddy hope to see you again soon.

Tragic end to a young and talented man. He would be 66 years old now. I remember reading about this in Sharon's autobiography.

I saw RR play, front row in Bham, AL...right in front of him. The third to last show he played.
The live album that was later released did no justice to what I heard that night. Had he lived he MIGHT have gone back to classical music, but I think he would have been an even bigger rival to EVH.
I will never forget that explosion of sound that I heard that night. It was unforgettable. RIP RR.

I didn't get to see Randy sadly cause the tragedy happened just a few weeks before the show at MSG. But I've heard loads of great sound board recordings from the last couple of months before Randy died and I totally agree that the live album didn't do him justice. There's way better shows and recordings they could have used. Max Norman.. The engineer and producer of Blizzard, Diary and Tribute also stated that the tapes they gave him for the Tribute album were not the best they could have given him and he had to clean up the recordings big time. Check out any show from the last couple of months with Randy and you'll hear some mind blowing recordings. Though I'm sure none can beat seeing him around the time that you did.

Randy was an incredible classical and rock guitarist, he was as sweet and as humble as can be and as Rudy has said and feels Randy was murdered, I agree. This didn't need to happen, anyhow may they all RIP!
