  • On March 19, 1982, Randy Rhoads the heavy metal guitarist from Ozzy Osbourne's band died in a plane crash in Leesburg Florida.
    Among those killed were Randy Rhoads, Rachel Youngblood the seamstress for the band, and Andrew Aycock, the tour bus driver with an expired pilot's license. We will find Flying Baron Estates which is the location of the crash and discuss the events of that tragic day.

    Randy is still my favorite guitarist of all time! He died young but accomplished so much in that short time. His solos and riffs are still attempted by new guitar players!

    We're going to have to work on your approach speeds. Used up alot of runway on that landing at Baron : )
    Good topic and tour. I was one of the last people to see Randy perform. He was in Atlanta on the tour shortly before this. I was lucky and got seats close to the stage. During a solo, his high E string broke. I saw it snap. He continued right through the lead switching to a lower key using the strings he had. Unbelievable musician.

I was 11 when the accident happened and remember it well hearing it on the radio in Florida. I was a fairly new, rabid Ozzy fan and it took the wind out of my little pre-teen life. Its interesting how much conflicting info and how little, precise official info is available.

    My personal Diary I wrote the next day after the last show of Randy Rhoads in Knoxville Tennessee! RIP RANDY! YOU ARE SORELY MISSED!
    OZZY OSBOURNE: THURSDAY MARCH 18TH 1982: RANDY RHOADS LAST SHOW AT THE KNOXVILLE CIVIC COLISEUM: DIARY OF A MADMAN TOUR:
    Upon entering the coliseum after buying my tour shirt and ticket 🎫 stub processing: I noticed the stage was set up like a medieval castle with arches and bats 🦇 flying around the top of them. There was a staircase leading up to Tommy Aldridge’s Drumkit. The top left of Tommy was where Donny Airey’s keyboards were set up. Stage right and left had to cages with which Randy Rhoads would appear from the floor stage right and Rudy Sarzo stage left. OZZY had a throne of which he would appear out of to start the show to Over the Mountain. Tommy had his drum tech dressed as an Executioner stand beside his kit with his arms crossed. The staircase had a small section that would open and a small dwarf named: Ronnie (after Ronnie James Dio the new singer for Black Sabbath-replacing OZZY) and hand OZZY towels and water between songs. Little did we all know that later in the show: the executioner would bring the dwarf out to be hung from the rafters and later he would cut off his head using a guillotine! At the end of the show OZZY climbed onto a giant mechanical hand that OZZY stood on top of and launched unspecified meat 🥩 🍖 into the audience! Of course it was all an a theatrical act as the dwarf appeared to take a bow with OZZY and the band. When OZZY smiled we noticed he put vampire 🧛‍♀️ teeth in! We laughed hard! I went to the show with my friend Richard and his older brother Greg who was 18 at the time. We were 13. Greatest show on earth! Richard and I were both terrified and thrilled at what we witnessed! Unfortunately the next morning all that excitement and energy was gone as we learned that Randy Rhoads perished in a plane crash in Florida. Richard and I played drums but Greg played guitar 🎸 and he definitely took it the hardest! One of the greatest guitarist of our generation and had just won the new guitarist of the year by Guitar Player magazine. Rest In Peace Randy Rhoads your music lives on!
    Sincerely,
    Gary Lagstrom

I wondered what happened but I didn't find out until I went to my motel room in Leesburg and on the news was all about the crash and the fact that they buzzed the bus & hit it. Speculation was randy was flying the plane. It was THE story for weeks.

    I’ve seen and read everything you can find about this tragedy for the last 40 years. I believe Ayecock had a heart attack, or he just got to low and slow and stalled it. Remember, he was trying to allow Randy to take some pictures, meaning he may have slowed it down and stalled. I have yet to find out if the flaps were extended or retracted. I think most evidence was burned up, because the FAA report does not say a darn thing, other than it was an accident. I just wish Randy would have never got on that thing. I miss him every day…. Pilots licenses don't expire. He may not have been checked out in this plane, not current for flight, been suspended or medically disqualified. I still have and use the license I earned in the 1970s.

    • @realediciocco1598
      @realediciocco1598 2 года назад +2

      In most countries you need to maintain a valid medical to keep the licence valid otherwise no medical means no licence which means you are not legally allowed to fly.

    • @fluxerflixer1
      @fluxerflixer1 Год назад

      His medical was expired. He didn’t have permission to use someone else’s airplane. And he killed a young man while crashing a helicopter a few years before. Snorted coke and drove all night long. Who knows how long Ayecock was awake? But I do know he could have had a heart attack making these illegal maneuvers flying that low. He could have gotten an adrenaline rush doing it. I believe he slumped into the controls and Randy was trying to get him off the control column in a last ditch effort. Don Airey said he could see Randy struggling with something up front as he was in the back seats area. I don’t believe the pilot suicide crap for one minute. This guy Ayecock was bad JuJu!!!!

    the dereliction of duties by Darth Hideous indirectly led to this, she did not download the Aycock info to Jake Duncan about the prior incident. She also let him do coke all night and pick up his estranged wife in Knoville, which adds fuel to the murder suicide theories....as she was at the bus door when he was flying.

    Randy had a known fear of flying. I’m sure he knew the bus driver was using coke. I can’t believe Don Airey was foolish enough to go up with that guy and then he was buzzing the tour bus and acting carelessly. Why did Don Airey not say to Randy, don’t go up with that guy? I’m not sure what possessed Randy to accept Aycock’s invitation on the second flight but there was a serious lack of good judgement by EVERYONE involved in this tragedy.

      I guess the statement that gets used everywhere about being burned and identified by jewelry stems from the autopsy report. The report dated 3/20/82 9:00AM by Dr William H Shutze opens with. "This is the body of a badly burned male". It then describes the bits of clothing and jewelry. "portions of blue jeans and a portion of shirt, the color of which cannot be determined. There is a gold chain around the neck with a cross pendant and a second pendant with the initials "R.R." I guess people read more into that when writing accounts of the event. Thanks for the clarity.

      I have the autopsy photos. Randy was intact as far as head and torso. He's missing a hand and there's not much below the waist. He's burnt well beyond recognition. Thankful it was fast. Visited with Jerry at the site back in 2005 and he was able to fill in some details. He was devastated by what happened, including the loss of Andy. He'd met Randy before and really liked him. They talked about electric trains. Jerry was an older country music guy but he thought the world of Randy and his talent. The grounds is a beautiful and peaceful place - an oasis in a seriously hot part of Fl.

      @@magicvoice31 I was given the photos about 15 years ago. They are in color. You could maybe make out his jaw line but it really looks like a casualty in a WWII fire fight. Nothing about the body says it's Randy other than the documentation. Some folks might see that the body is contorted from the pain of dying in such a manner. It's not the case. Bodies contract and curl when burnt like anything else. Randy was gone in an instant thankfully and did not suffer.
