    ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Red yeast rice has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. It has been shown to decrease cholesterol. It includes HMG-CoA reductase materials. In fact, statins were originally developed from Monacolins, the fungus used to make red yeast rice.
    The FDA declared Monacolin products as a drug and tried to stop the sale of supplements containing it. This decision went to court and was overturned by the US Court of Appeals. They actually typically contain 10-20 mg of monacolins. Mevachor, made by Merck from red yeast rice, contains 20-80 mg of monacolins. So you're taking the same thing but usually at a lower dose. Side effects are the same: liver function problems, muscle breakdown.
    I prefer to use better statins at far lower doses. And I don't appreciate the patent formula product salesmen all over the web saying, "my product, XXX, is safer, more effective, and contains the exact right combination..... blah, blah, blah."

    I have listened to a lot of people and there is no question, this Dr is top draw. Firstly, he is a heart Dr (a lot are not). He is actively in the business of advising patients. He has certain complications himself which he outlines. Understated, authentic, and an unflappable style which is refreshing. Thanks Doc.

    Red Yeast Rice unlike statins, which contain a single monacolin, red yeast rice provides a mixture of monacolins, and this combination interacts with the body more readily and is less likely to cause adverse effects....

    Prescription statins cause me to have serious anxiety along with this overall body restlessness where I can't stop constantly tossing and turning...at nighttime only. I was hospitalized with idiopathic chest discomfort recently, mentioned my statin reactions and a staff doctor recommended I use red yeast rice. I'll give it a try.

    Good review. I was involved in natural products (or snake oil as some prefer) for years. I remember how companies responded to the drug companies attacks. One left the marketplace; yet they were one of the very few manufacturers that I trusted. As of last year I quit selling everything. Personal decision after seeing the benefits of food. I still take a few things. Your personal story is powerful. Thanks for the transparency.

    My GP 3 years ago put me on statins to lower my total cholesterol , 240. The first night I couldn't sleep because of a very strong pain in my shoulders, the second night either; I stopped taking the statins and the pain went away and I was able to sleep well. Someone told me about red rice and I started with it. I had the same symptoms as with the statins from the first day and on the third day I had to stop. I have a normal weight for my height and eat well. All I have done now is give up white bread and eat less sugar and carbohydrates. It seems to me that having high cholesterol at 62 years old is not a problem for me, I think I will live many years. In any case, I would have to do a CAC to see how my arteries are, right?
    Thanks for the videos. Sorry for commenting on a video from 4 years ago.

    My father had a heart attack. I got him to ask his Dr. For the intake papers from the hospital. His hdl cholesterol was in the nice high protective range of 67, a nice low ldl of 92, and a total cholesterol of 177. These numbers are great! Leave cholesterol alone.
    What he did have was insulin resistant type 2 diabetes (undiagnosed at the time) who knows for how many years he had levels of insulin up into the stratosphere.
    Just a quick case report.

    I believe a combo of citrus bergamot, and berberine is superior to a combo of red yeast rice and CoQ10. The main reason is for their effects on glucose disposal and HDL. My HDL went from 21 to 39 in 3 months after introducing those supplements.

    Well thank you for this video Dr. My husband is 73, and his cholesterol now is 3something. He was taking Vascepa because the Lipitor gave him muscle pain, he tried Crestor, and this gave him a temperature every day, stopped that, but was taking Flax seed-Primrose Oil, 1300 mg (Omega 3,6,9 EFA compex)and Niacin 100 mg. he needed to increase, but didn't...so we have a new Dr. and he's put him on rosuvastatine calcium 10 mg 1@day, along with CoQ-10 200 mg. I already read the side affects and memory loss & confusion...We really don't like that outcome, but he'll take this at least to lower the Cholesterol to down in the 200's. We exercise, and we eat healthy, red meat maybe once a week, we eat mostly at lunch, rice, beans, avocado,cucmber, & tomatoe, alternate, fish, salmon, How about taking Niacin 100 mg. with the Rosuvastatine? Breakfast is a healthy shake & Dinner's with greens juicing. Dr. recommeded he do a screening test for clogging , haven't make that appointment yet, working on eye exam, & colonoscopy next month...We don't like to take prescription drugs, but prefer a natural alternative..and we don't do vaccines. Dr if liver produces excess cholesterol, something else somewhere is not allowing the liver to function normally?

    Problem with supplements is knowing the optimal dosage and how much of what ingredients. I was on 5 mg of Atoravastatin for several years until you recommended Rosuvastatin. I asked my GP to switch me over and he did not have a problem with that. He pointed out that the dosage starts at 5 mg, and I thought, okay, same dosage as the other one. The pharmacy told me that the strength of the 2 is different. Oh? I found a chart on the internet that said Rosuvastatin is twice as strong as Atoravastatin. So I just cut the pill in half and take 2.5 mg a day.

    For a newcomer like me it's good to have a quailified positive opinion and some specific knowledge about statins. According to my 23andMe I'm not suited to tolerate it very well (muscle pain and atrophy). Nevertheless, I will keep in mind - as inflammation is not likely to be well tolerated in anybody - that a little dose of statins might be beneficial even for me, if I should develope atheroschlerosis in a critical degree. Thanks for this video!

  • @frankenz66

    LOL, don't worry about offending Red Yeast Rice users like me anyways! I do myself. I had been taking it for many years, and this last fall (even though no real changes in my diet should have warranted it, my cholesterol panels jumped up higher than they had been in all my life, which I personally don't even attribute exclusively to diet, but other factors as well working in tandem) my Total Cholesterol jumped to 240. My doctor laid out the ideas of either going on a statin or taking more Red Yeast Rice that I had been already. Also, doubling my fish oil as well. Being sure I got 1000 mgs of the EPA and DHA twice daily. 2- 600 mgs of the Red Yeast Rice twice daily. 60 days later it had dropped 20 points, (that was even during the holiday periods of late year where I tried to be good but situations still happen) and I continue it for now and have not gotten a level checked lately. I knew it had same active ingredients as some statins. Thanks! I just worry about things like Alzheimer's disease with statins, because too much cholesterol has been taken out out of the brain and not just my arteries. I guess Red Yeast Rice could do a person the same way. Is that unfounded?

      Hey Franklin Taylor, Today I came to this board looking for an answer to the same question you have posed. I quite taking my statins a couple months ago and started the RYR the same time. So if they work the same way, have I really quit the statin?

    • @PrevMedHealth
      @PrevMedHealth  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you Dr. Brewer. I will keep that in mind. I do not know if 1200 mg twice a day is excessive or not. It is double what is recommended on the bottle, but that's is what my doctor suggested I go up to.

    • @copout1405
      @copout1405 6 лет назад +2

      Franklin Taylor, I do not know if Atorvastatin and Pravastatin are derivatives of RYR. I am a new comer to this theme of taking some responsibility for my own health and I feel quite inadequate when confronted with the enormity of that job. At 72 yoa I have been taking the aforementioned statins for 5 years and have experienced symptoms recently that have caused me to break with taking the advice of my primary care physician for their continued use. I have immersed myself in these RUclips channels which have become my primary source of education in the matter. Like you I will be back to the lab for more bloodletting in a few weeks and then to see my primary care doc a couple weeks later. I have made some decent strides in making changes to my diet and exercise routines and have already seen results. As for the RYR I gave that up yesterday after finding out the answer about similar symptoms. I have compiled a list of 23 side affects(probably incomplete) of the statin drugs which I found on RUclips. Of that number I have experienced 11 of them. Of those 11 a few are caused only by the statins and the rest have been aggravated to varying degrees by eating these things. I hope to keep my primary care physician but he may not want to keep me after our next consult.

I thought I was doing great lowering from 249 to 210. This is quite confusing. I am taking plant sterols and red yeast rice, metamucil, vita d, calmagfizz. Cholesterol plugs lesions in arteries, that's the function. Now you reduce the cholesterol level that your body determined to be adequate for it's job by using statins. You not now at risk of bursting a vein when blood pressure increase during exercise/stress? Should focus not be solely on reducing lesions that will automatically result in your lever producing less cholesterol?

How much harassment from the doctor would need to be endured to get a statin prescription that may last longer than the doctor or drug company would like to see?... Otherwise, the only point in this video vague to me, was that ryr needs coq10 and D3 (to work?) , I think.

    Does the yeast/fungus/mold on rice create red compounds (aka statins) to suppress cholesterol synthesis in competing bacteria? If so, isn't the affect of statins mainly through modulation of the gut biome? On a side note, the box of blueberries I bought 6 months have shrunk sitting in the fridge but still have no fungus growth.

      Almost forgot, Im not insulin resistant, my number for that was 5.4. I also did a Lifeline screening and everything came out perfect. I also am getting. CAC scan in about a week. Is that scan worth getting, what are your thoughts. Thanks for all you do. I hope you see this!🙏🏼

    Can you take red yeast rice supplement and take statin also together

    • @PrevMedHealth
      @PrevMedHealth  4 года назад +1

      I would not do that. That’s double-dosing - and worse. It’s like mixing statins. Mixing statins greatly increases side effects.

    Is it possible for statins to cross the blood brain barrier and cause brain fog? Or not really?
