Should BJJ Black Belts Be Better People ?

- In today's video I answer a question from a friend of mine (who's also a BJJ coach) about whether or not BJJ Black Belts should be better people.
Now obviously I think we all know the answer to this question and the TLDR version is that, No they don't have to be better people.
But in the video I share some more philosophical ideas on the nature of the journey through Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and how it could possibly help make you a better person. . . if you want it to.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
Well said.
Power and experience amplify whatever you are. If you are a "good person," increased power/experience/money allows you to be a better person. But, if you are a "bad person," increased power/experience/money allows you to be worse...
Kind of like the super soldier serum.
A quote from Abraham Lincoln:
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power"
I like this answer. All people _should_ be virtuous. They aren't. We aren't. But we should be striving to be.
Also, it is imperative that coaches and professors make it clear that a black belt means more than skill on the mat. I don't think every gym holds that standard, but each coach should want their black belts to reflect the virtues of the gym.
nope... bjj is just a sport. you dont need to be a good perosn to accel at a sport. it's not a religion.
@@Matt90Nine there is no need for anyone to be anything in a SPORT other than persistent. that's it, that's what you need to be to be a black belt in bjj. it's NOT a religion. this tma nonsense that you need to be virtuous to be involved in martial arts is absurd. this is America not a buhdist temple in Japan. as for misspelling excel.... great.... ya got me. you get a point for being grammar police, congratulations. feel better now? Im a bjj black belt.. I learned morals from my parents, but Ive known plenty of bjj black belts with no morals. the two are completely unrelated.
@@Matt90Nine Im not reading all that ridiculous nonsense. the gracies care ONLY about money. bjj is NOT judo... the fact that you make this silly claim tells me you dont train bjj. also, anyone that thinks bjj is choreographed moves knows NOTHING about bjj. you give yourself away as a complete blowhard offering opinions about a subject they know NOTHING about. you dont need to try and be moral to be good at bjj or any sport... there is enough immoral athletes out there, one would think that was obvious. my rebuttal to your incredibly verbose pretentious and bloviated opinions is complete and utter disregard. your opinion matters nothing to me. as for getting a stranger off the street to wear a gi? what? wtf does that even mean? Ive been training in bjj 4 or 5 days a week for 20 years now fella. this is the reason why I find your absurd opinions comical. have a good day.
@@Matt90Nine again... wont read all that nonsense. as for your absurd weak insult.... yeah man, I cant read. you got it. secondly, the gracies want their names in lineages because they wanna get paid... same reason they want to run the ibjjf. furthermore, I dont give AF what you believe little fella. too funny.
@@Matt90Nine you clearly dont train.
Should black belts be good people? Absolutely! They are the face and the role models. This goes for any discipline.
But, as Chewy says, just because they should doesn’t mean they will.
Jiu jitsu stirs up a lot of stuff and then gives you a chance to deal with it. This is so true!
Chewy, I want to say thank you! Ive been watching all of you video and just competed in a NAGA tournament. I placed in all 5 of the division I was signed up for! I did GI and no GI as a white belt. I've only been doing this for 5 months and my coaches are really proud of me! I trained so many things for countless hours at night by myself imagining you as my training partner. Thanks for being my internetcoach!
Black belts should be good people yes..with great power comes great responsibility, but some take advantage of their skills. It’s the same in any area where someone has knowledge over another. Just think of Mikey being the hero and geo being a villain. Some are “good” some are “bad”
Completely correct , the skills they posses is not normal to the average man , in a way it’s like having a concealed weapon they can pull out at any time , they SHOULD be respectful, humble and just not a cunt lol
Jedis and Siths lol
@@quantumblurrr those movies are pretty accurate displaying character dynamics in real life, minus the epic glowing swords 😁
Bro, I dig your depth. Not just moves but real-life, heart, human stuff!
Appreciate it bro.
I think this whole thing came from Joe and Eddie talking on a podcast like 10 years ago. They said bjj is the ultimate "douchebag filter.' Time has kinda proven them wrong, but that idea is still out there.
Very good video Chewy. I enjoyed this one very much and furthered trust in you. If I ever get back into a martial art and overcome my physical obstacles you will be remembered as one of the sparks that did it. Thank you for being a good example
I almost didn’t watch this because I’m only at purple, but I’m so glad I did - very insightful and inspirational - thank you 🙏
Our black belts are like monks :D They are super calm all the time and always helping out. Then again i go to 10th planet so probably most of the guys are stoned all the time...
Haha.
No, being a black belt doesn't require you to be a good person, just good at jiu jitsu. But if you want to leverage that black belt to teach jiu jitsu then be prepared to be held to a higher standard than you were as a student.
I'd expect more out of a brown belt instructor than a black belt who just shows up to train and then goes home.
Being a black belt means you were good at jiu jitsu (when tested).... One day you'll be old (or injured) - when your skill leaves you, what are you then?
@@theoriginalmikaveli first off.... normally there is no belt test in bjj. as for when your skill leaves you, what are you then? it's the same for everything you are... people get old and eventually die.; that's the way of it.
No, being a black belt doesnt make you a better person. It makes you a better trained person.
This perfectly sums it up.
Thank you for that insight Prof. Chewy
I got second place in my first bjj tournament
How many in your bracket though?
2 matchs
Great video chewy!
Really eloquent explanation
As a white belt jiu jitsu has been a huge game changer for me. When i started it, I got dumped. My world fell apart. I came to the mats. Every time i was there, i wasnt just fight the person in front of me, i was also fighting all the guilt and sadness that and all my insecurities were just there right in front of me. It has really helped me bounce back quickly. I still got a long way to go though.
what a great answer!
I learn BJJ right outside the gym by jumping people coming out of the gym in the parking lot. It's free training cause I can't afford a gym membership. Got pretty good, gonna move up to jumping yellow belts soon.
Great philosophy. I like the honor that this sport breeds between people. Going to war with someone really makes you respect them more. I love the role model examples I see in my black belt coaches.
I think the bigger issue is the BJJ community as a whole being okay with "bad" black belts. You have guys like Renzo Gracie that have many skeletons, some in the closet, some just out in the open. Yet the majority of the BJJ community thinks the world of him. You have guys like Jaime Kilstein who has had multiple, credible sexual assault allegations - yet he is allowed to thrive in the BJJ community. The state of who is welcome in the BJJ says more about the culture of BJJ than it does about the individual.
Renzo did nothing wrong

And the other thing is pure BS , renzo loves all people.
Great words! Thank you!
I love bjj absolutely amazing its changing my life in such a positive way but so many drama queens obsessed with a belt colour absolutey every credit to them the amount of work you put into it but just because your a high belt colour doesnt make you a supeior being be humble with everything in life we only have one love your vids mate 👍🏻👍🏻
Hopefully the gym owner/head blackbelt sets a good example. Even enforces a good example and good environment for training.
Your videos are so smoothed and we'll worded.... Do you do these videos in one take? Or do you rehearse for hours then hit the record button? Lol. Your the best man!
I read the questions a day in advanced usually. Then record the next day. No real rehearsal or scripting. Just get a few ideas and chat with you guys. I'm used to doing this with my students already.
great question , I think people hold them to a higher atndard for sure.
And they should!
I'm so tempted to travel to america from UK, just to get a class from you lol
You a fan of Elliot hulse chewjitsu? Your energy Is very similar, love the vids man
I’m not even old enough to be a blue belt so I guess this’ll help me in the future
Or heck just help me in general
This is great, thank you!
Interesting topic!
Our school actuality works with a local organization that refers survivors of abuse to us. Most of them are children. I'm the kids coach (3 stripe blue belt please don't hate lol) I was asked to teach because of coaching in youth sports. Anyways we have had kids come in that have low self worth due to their situation and parents as well. And it's a great feeling to not only see them grow and become themselves again but to also see the parents as well. Jiu jitsu has a ripple effect for the people that are around it even if they are not involved.
Agreed we are each on our own path but it's easier to follow our path with positive people around. We have been blessed to have some very very humble black belts in our area that love to share their knowledge and life experiences. Kudos to them
My old dojo did same, I was a bsa leader, we helped get many kids on a better path.god bless and keep you.
I understood that part the imaginary me i want to be that i know im going there just keep making that step forward everyday
Shouldn't everyone be a good person? Holding people to a different standard just because they do or don't train jiu-jitsu seems odd, I know there are a lot of kind and humble practitioners but I feel like that's letting everyone else off too easy.
@* Toxic Reviews * can't argue with that logic...
I think you missed the point of the message
I feel that a black belt gives a perceived position of authority or power to some; either the Black belt themselves or those that perceive a black belt as having this position of power. As with other positions that some could view as having authority or power such as a teacher, police officer, etc., there may be a perceived standard of them having to act in a particular way. Typically a higher standard than those in positions without a perceived authority.
Aye I gotta question I'm a white belt btw I love ur videos I watch basically everyday. So I don't know all the rules I've been in love with the lapel chokes. Can you choke someone out with someone's or your own belt in a roll ? It's a weird question I know
Good topic
The problem comes when assholes promote assholes. The cycle can be stopped. I have 12-13 black belts that I know on a personal level or have worked with. 7-8 are worthless human beings. My personal belief is that being a decent person should be part of getting the belt. You are doing it the right way.
Black belts sometimes take themselves very seriously 👀
Seems like black belts are typically going to exemplify the qualities that the guy who promoted them value.
Question I think is worth talking about (because I've heard it said in a few places) is whether a black belt should be expected to teach? Whether that's a full on class or just helping pass down skills on an individual basis. Some people just aren't wired that way, some are. Is that something that should be expected on a black/upper belt?
Good question.
Saving for a video.
"Something to chew on." Blessings
Yes.
People should be better people.
Jui Jitsu simply amplifies the true you.
Chewy is like the Jocko of jiu-jitsu
I always imagined when you get you bjj black belt you reach a state of enlightenment and have a permanent halo around your head
I got my orange belt today and next year I’ll be able to go for blue
yes
Max was here
Unlikely that someone considers themselves a bad person and is more likely that their sense of morality and virtues are different from your own/socially accepted norms.
If you ask all black belts if they are good people you will probably get a resounding yes lol so it's all perspective.
chewys lifeskill course 101
You watch alot of elliott hulse back in the day?
Bro I haven't even got a stripe yet and all I do is jujitsu help me out!
There are a good majority of respectable black belts every now and then you'll find a dueche bag that is a black belt and is ego is bigger then his GI
All a black belt means is that they did BJJ for longer
Unfortunately/fortunately, being a good person encompasses more than doing BJJ for a long time
absolutely. this is the correct answer.
Why just black belts?
You are the ted lasso of bjj
Ted Lasso?
@@Chewjitsu Ted Lasso is a newer tv show about an American football coach coaching an English soccer team. His philosophies and mindset are similar to you :).
Philosophy and martial arts seem to have a natural connection. Like Jordan Peterson says you can’t really be a good person unless you have the capability to be bad, so when you actually develop real capability the choice then becomes even more in your face and you’re not just stuck with the circumstances you’re thrown in
Is this a reupload?
no
Where do I send questions??
Email or IG is usually the best.
@@Chewjitsu Thanks! OSS!
I accidentally read this as “Should Black people be better belts.” That was confusing.
😂 that would be a weird video
Muscmeci may have a somewhat naïve outlook.
Gives example of terrible black belt: “they like to hustle t-shirts grrr”
Me: well that’s very specific and random…wait doesn’t chewy sell t-shirts?
Yeah I didn't give good context. One of my students who trains with me now said he'd walk into his old gym. And his coach who never trained with him or taught classes who be out telling him "man you want a new shirt" or whatever. Selling products is fine. But you don't want students to feel like dollar signs and you shouldn't treat them as such either.
@@Chewjitsu yeah I fully understand that, that happened to me at a muay Thai gym once. I was just poking fun, I understand how hard it is to make videos and I appreciate everything you do and stand for. If this means anything at all I just want you to know that you helped me so much with my Jiu Jitsu journey. Much love from Australia ✌️

NO! You should be a black belt to fight better dirty :)
sounds like a PSF question
"belts dont maketh the man" Jesus ..... I think?
So so so so many bonehead black belts 😂😂😂
No, no one has to be a good person lol
I definitely think you can't be a shit person and a black belt. That interview after the match was intense but he wasn't wrong. "I rooted for him in all his matches" I really felt for him when it happened you could tell just how hurt he was.
Yeah, I want to be really good at defense and competition is (for me) nothing but a marker to determine where I measure up. How high I measure is of little consequence truthfully. That said I've really been making it a point to guide others where I can (as a blue belt there isn't much I have to offer there), but I know that I have to produce results if I want those I have faith in to take my instructions to heart. No one wants to follow a loser.
You would hope that years of getting smashed and realizing there is always someone better would be humbling for everyone.
But… as many have stated, it just brings out your true character more.
1st?
Crappy people ruin jiu-jitsu .
Crappy people ruin everything they touch.
You don't really need to. It's all about business. Always been. Athletes need not to be a better person they just need to win.
I disagree. Business is important though.
Who cares?!
