When Rolling Light in BJJ Goes Wrong. . .

  • In today's video I answer a question from someone who was trying to light roll and it went wrong for him. Basically he said he was trying to go a little easier and ended up getting into a tough roll with someone who didn't go at the same pace as him.
After the roll he was both frustrated by the situation and upset with himself for getting angry. In this video I share some ideas on choosing training partner for rolling in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and also some of my own experiences of trying to go light, but getting rough rolled.
Hope the video is helpful to you!

A good tip for keeping a roll light, is asking your partner what they what to work on. For example, if they want to work on guard passing, you can reset every time they pass, and it can help stop things from getting too hectic.

This is great advice and what I do quite often with the less experienced. I’m a 110kg purple belt at 47 and I don’t do it because I’m worried about injuries (yet) but because I don’t want to smesh them with sub after sub as I and they don’t learn much from that.
I’d prefer to pass on knowledge and often stop to discuss their options and game plan for a particular position we find ourselves in rather than leave them to scramble with flailing knees and elbows due to not having enough tools in the box yet.
PS it easy for things to escalate as it’s a fighting art and I always wear my mouthguard now after chipping teeth a few years back when someone brought the death match after saying “let’s roll light bro”!

"Let's roll light." My go-to phrase when I'm (a) tired, (b) feeling slow or lazy, or (c) not feeling like getting smashed into oblivion. As a 43-year-old purple belt having trained for six years, I have learned the beauty of being selective about rolling partners and pace. Not because I don't appreciate different rolling styles, body types, etc., but I just gotta make sure I can walk off the mat with enough of my body in tact to roll the next night, haha!

That's how I do it. I tell new students this all the time. If you don't want to go hard....then don't go hard. LOL Most higher ranks will match intensity and let newbies work. At least a good training partner will do this.

I turn 50 this year. Mid blue. Half the gym is blue and everyone is a lot younger. I'm coming back from injuries. I've cut rolling at open mat time down significantly because I don't want to get into the spartan death matches. I feel like a giant wuss about it, but the alternative is missing a month of training due to injury. When I try and go light- guys just use it to flex.

    • @MarkNathanOfficial
      @MarkNathanOfficial 3 года назад +5

I wouldn’t worry about it. People should understand that it’s not a tournament mindset. Open mat is meant to explore techniques you haven’t quite mastered. They are your teammates and they should give you a challenge, but not push you 100% every roll. If you can’t find anyone who can control their ego, switch gyms.

Thanks for ur input Andy. 58 yo 4 stripe wht belt. In June I tore the top of my rt foot literally off. Tendon nerve and vascular injuries. Back on mat late July everyone being awesome rolling partners. Thursday night ( no gi night ) rolled w 17 yo wht belt. Because of my foot I’m mostly looking to keep an open guard or half guard and work on retaining when I lose those positions. This 17 yo kid goes apes sht I screw up he takes my back stretches me out and chokes the fk out of me. First time ever I felt anger and walked off mat for water and to cool down.
Days later and I’m still thinking about showing this 6’4” 130 lb kid what violence feels like. Lord willing humility rules over our next roll but can’t guarantee it or I just don’t roll w him and like u said I don’t want to feel like a “wuss” and avoid the challenge.

57 yo purple belt. Struggling to train regularly. Figured out mornings are better because evenings affect my sleep quality and recovery. You do have to start being choosy and conservative in partner selection. Best guys at my gym are almost pros now, BJJ takes precedence over work. I will generally roll with the bigger, stronger whites and blues to give them some reasonable opposition and save the other white belts from being smashed.

I am a 50yr old Blue Belt.. I have several other Blue Belts near my age who understand and we roll well together. There are several others who seem to be trying to get a UFC contract or something, I have way too many injuries from them. My professor is really good at making those pairings and is quick to stop rolls when he thinks they are cross that line.

Unless I have a competition coming up or I'm nursing an injury, it's good to roll with the spaz sometimes. Learning to stay calm while the other person is acting like they're high on bath salts is a valuable skill that will help in both competition and possibly a self defense situation.
If they muscle themselves into a good position, it's just another opportunity to work on my escapes.
All the good BJJ coaches and channels will say the same thing, lose the ego in your BJJ training. There's no winners and losers in practice. If a guy submits you when you thought you were just flowing, who cares? If they are ripping submissions and being unsafe, that is completely different, and the coach needs to have a discussion with them.
    Always love the videos Chewy!

@@MrNll004 That sucks, sorry to hear about your injuries. Yeah, size discrepancy can definitely be an issue. Being a bigger guy myself, I just don't understand how these big guys that go crazy on the smaller guys exist. With smaller guys, I try to work on technique and speed, rather than muscling through positions or submissions. I guess it's just lack of self-awareness and how you can really hurt someone if you get careless. I definitely was a spaz when I first started, but I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything reckless when I was rolling with a guy where I had an obvious size/strength advantage. I'd feel like an idiot if someone smaller than me got hurt because I was being a jerk on the mat.

For me it's when your partner doesn't realize they're being a dick and you have to serve a bit of mat justice. My trigger is when lower belts grab and bend my fingers. It usually starts with a warning "hey man, no fingers". Any continued dick moves get the competition treatment. Hard rolling, quick subs and maybe some forearm grinding in the chin. Every single time I end up feeling like an asshole for doing it but thinking about it off the mat I'm like "did I have to take it that far?" I feel like it's almost an inherent panic button but it's something I've never done so I can't quite get my head around it.

48 years old. 6'3 210 lbs., athletic build. I'm one of the older guys in the gym but also still one of the stronger and most explosive. 3 stripe white belt - a year and 4 months of training. I don't do politics and everyone at the gym knows it. I have no problem declining an invitation to roll. I'll get down with anyone - but not anytime. I go to open mats once a week always, sometimes twice - I know I'm going to war then and I'll take on all comers. If a spazzy roller or someone I know has a tendency to go hard and fast on subs (whether from our gym or a visitor) I know what I'm getting into and I default to high alert when rolling. On a regular day if I've done a heavy lift session at the gym earlier in the day or if I'm just not feeling it I will pass up an invite to go with one of the aforementioned characters and tell them I'll go with them at open mat that weekend. I've found that people respect the matter of fact approach I take, especially since I mean what I say and roll with them at open mat. Of course there's a huge physicality aspect to preventing injury but I think mindset has a lot to offer as well. If there's a part of you that's signaling alarms at rolling with a particular person I say heed the warnings and act accordingly. If you're going against someone that you know doesn't have mid-level gears you should roll with them when you feel up to it, and shelf the roll when you don't.

So I’m 41 here is my story, we were doing 3 min sparring sessions at the end of the class. Before each person I rolled with I told them very clearly “ hey look I need to go super light, my hand is completely taped like a spatula cause a hyper extended thumb, my elbow is inflamed (same one that got barred), plus a disc in my back is also twingy. I’m beat up cause I have been training hard so let’s take it super easy” Each person including the guy that got me assure me they would go light. First 3 guys were great, no issues. Went to roll with this last guy, had the same conversation and we agreed to go 30% or less. I told him my thumb is bugging me so I’m not even gonna use my right hand. At first it was mild but then as I started shutting stuff down he amped up more, so I backed off and gave up position intentionally so as to not amp things up and keep it flowy. I was losing position but it was fine I was holding how I could without it escalating. He got into mount, I figured I would ride out the rest of the time defending him on top no biggie, if he chokes me oh well. He was not able to get a choke though and I guess at some point my arm popped up and he locked in a spinning armbar from mount, my elbow popped before he even hit the ground plus he hit the ground with it tight. It wasn’t that I didn’t know how to defend the arm bar and he got me, it’s that I didn’t defend it at all thinking we were going super light. Not that my arm bar defense is perfect cause it’s obviously not, but I definitely could have and would have shut it down had I known he was gonna attempt to lock one in on me. I was under the impression we were going light and he wasn’t going to throw something on me same as I would do if we were sprilling. Mild resistance. I didn’t want to resist any harder and tempt him to pull harder on something the I end up hurt so I was mostly letting him have stuff, Obviously letting down my guard to someone I didn’t know was a mistake. Not saying it was my fault, dude fucked up not me, just saying it’s the lesson I’m taking away from it.
So that’s the crux of it. I don’t think he did it on purpose, I think he got caught up in the moment, but it was for sure his fault and he knew it. I was super pissed, so much so I just packed up and left cause I felt like if I confronted him the way I felt it would have escalated quickly then I would just end up looking like the dick. He apologized, I said it’s cool, he asked “are you sure it’s cool or are you lying to me”? I said I’m for sure lying to you, but don’t worry about it and left.

To add to my other comment I just left on your other video, I tend to roll light from the get go. Not sure if it's a good or bad habit. I thoroughly enjoyed the Zen Machines style. Mario Sperry. Just rolled so effortlessly. That's my goal. Doesn't always happen! Shit I slowed roll into a deep half position just last week, and I kinda forgot the basic concept of it, paid the price and got smashed by a heavy blue belt. But some white belts, yeah, you gotta lay the law down sometimes.

Match strength with strength. Personally, I call this an ego roll, the other person takes advantages because they’ve called for a light roll. I like a flow roll, lots of experimentation and trying tons of stuff.

I tend to match the intensity of my sparring partners. At any point where i feel someone is too over bearing on me i'll politely ask them to chill a bit and let them know i'm not trying to kill them or some scenarios just tapout mid spar even if when i'm not in a submission or hold and let them know i want to go a little lighter or ask what they want to focus on.
I wonder it's just me sometimes when i roll with someone not as skilled as i am and they're really aggressive like clearly going nearly 100% on me i see it as a challenge like: How much i can handle just based on skill alone without resorting to my physical strength or speed? It's kind of interesting i usually ending up mounting them after like 2-3 minutes of them relentlessly trying to submit me and they're out of breath. Not all the time though lol

Just experienced this for the first time. I did BJJ for a month or two then 6 month break from injuries. Came back, met a new white belt and was super respectful and assumed he didn't know much so I'm like how hard do you wanna go and he's like "lets go real light" so even though I'm a white belt who knows nothing, I thought this guy knew even less, so I completely let him get on top of me without trying, thinking I'm helping this guy learn, then basically he acts like he's in a life or death situation and is trying to kill me, even attempted a neck crank. When we finished I said do you have something to prove or what? I swear I was so close to saying mate i'm here to practice BJJ if you want to fight lets go outside and we'll see what happens then.. but I decided to keep it respectful. Then I took a break round, he got smashed by another white belt, then I rolled with the white belt who smashed him and I'm like hey man did he pull the same shit on you? and he's like yeah..
The only good thing that came from this, is I actually understand how annoying it is wanting to practice bjj and the guy thinks we're in the jungle and it's life or death, and I thought to myself, that's probably how other people feel when they roll with me and I spaz on them, so it helped me calm down my own game.

I had a similar situation with a training partner who is basically stronger, faster, more advanced and I used to try to keep up with him. He got me in a RNC with his forearm across my neck and put pressure on my windpipe hard and fast. On another occasion I was rolling with him and he guillotined me very aggressively, I got angry and slapped him on his back pretty hard instead of lightly tapping, which rightfully upset him, so I came away feeling ashamed and embarrassed of myself for having lost control. In my mind I felt like a little kid again... but I learned from the situation and to like to think i have grown from it.

This might be odd, but sometimes, I go ‘light’ when rolling with males (me: average sized female). This happens when the male, maybe much younger or bigger or a combination of both goes ‘easy’ on me. In some cases there is a big skill differences. I have more experience than the guy. I don’t want to be a jerk and add in power/strength when the guy is ‘holding back’. What I fail to acknowledge is the inherent power and strength difference between males and females. I know and accept ‘men are stronger’, but in the moment of rolling I’m just thinking ‘he’s said he’ll go easy, I would be a jerk if I didn’t too. The fact is , his going easy is probably still more powerful than my most powerful self; especially if there is a substantial age difference (I’m old - 61😢😢). I have been training consistently for over 9 years and my experience is a factor, but that factor definitely diminishes rolling with a healthy 20-30 year old male😊. I will say, it has happened that some guys interpret ‘go easy’ as do nothing. If he is doing nothing and I full on attack, I feel like a jerk.

I remember when this larger Blue belt told me "go easy on me", then IMMEDIATLY jumps my guard, takes my back and throws up a nasty loop choke and YANKS it hard before I get to tap. What a freaking POS! My throat hurt the entire night and for the next few days. Nowadays, I will tell people right off the bat that I want to only flow roll and not go hard at all. My absolute worse pet peeve when you want to go light and they just go ham.

Gotta be real here. If you say you want to roll light, and the other person doesn't, then just roll light anyway. If you roll light, then there's not really any way for them to do shit really hard because by that point you just tap.
But that's just it people don't want to tap, when they, at the same time, don't consider the concession to "roll light" to be a submission in the first place.

The only time I've ever been mad on the mat was about 2 or 3 weeks before one of my sparring partners fight. Context, he was fighting a guy who talked alot of smack and at the end of camp he was full on murderer mentality. I get it and I was willing to match that energy and take some lumps if I have to as long as my teammate is getting what he needs to perform for his fight. And for 2 or 3 days in a row he was grinding elbows in myy thighs and shoulders and i was frustrated but let it go but then he grabbed my throat and pushed his fingers in around my windpipe. Now there is no chance he can do that In the octagon so it doesn't help him at all, and could have seriously hurt me. I kjew he only did it as he was frustrated I wasn't letting him advanced position and I yelled at him afterwards for quite a bit. Don't break your toys or you got nothing to play with dummy.

Good job laying a very firm boundary and not backing down. I think in this situation it's very reasonable. Sometimes if they're being continuously ignorant or just really out of line, you can't back down-you have to teach them a lesson/tell them to back down and see that they're in the wrong.

I just started at a new academy after prob 5 years of not training. Felt like I had a target on my back, everyone's like "are you new to town" ect, come time to roll it was like the ADCC trials. Next time I go I'm gonna ask whoever I pair up with to roll at a lower intensity / flow roll bc honestly the death matches just lead to aches, pains and possibily injuries + are you really even learning anything? I've found that during 100% rolls I revert back to my techniques I already know well and don't even get a chance to try anything we just worked on or drilled. I dont completely discount the usefulness of rolling hard, but I also realize for the most part it's pretty counter productive.

Rolled with a guy who had 2 months off.. my gym is doing competition sparring at the moment so you can imagine the intensity. Said to my partner I'll roll light as your gas tank isn't where it should be.. the geezer tried to go supersain within the first minute of the roll (was a 9 minute round altogether). I just decided to hold him in my guard rather than smash him. I'll get my revenge when his fitness has improved (we are both new(ish) blue belts) 😂

You cannot expect unknown people to roll light. You can make the roll lighter, by playing defensively and going to tighter positions (by attacking an ankle lock you kinda pushing him to go harder bro). But other than that, when you want a light roll you need to go to someone you trust.

@@badxradxandy first of all the guy was really good... And did one of those "imma sub you 30 times in 30 seconds" things. So he did that and didn't let up which is fine, but I only mention it because he was a higher rank and was just kind of just going overly hard the whole time. This was like my 3rd class back after recovering from a minor injury and I was out for about 2 months and I was attempting at a calm roll. Stuff happened and he ended up standing and I was on the ground. He was acting like he wanted me to stand, and I just figured he wanted to work on some throws so I obliged and went to stand up and he then did an arm drag to a flying arm bar, but instead of actually applying the arm bar his hips went directly through the back of my shoulder, dislocating it for a moment and ripping part of my deltoid and part of my pec. He was WAY too good to do some dumb shit like that. I've been out 2 years because of it- I couldn't lift my arm for 6 months. I know we want to go hard and it's fun, but I think it's good to understand we are using each others bodies to train and this shit effects everything else in someone's life. Dude never even apologized.

Always roll light. The harder you roll, the more likely it is that you’re going to make a mistake and leave yourself vulnerable. If you want to be explosive make sure it is in a transition that calls for it. Use your technique properly and you’ll dominate your opponent without having to roll hard.
