  • Shugborough Hall was the work of two brothers: swashbuckling sailor George Anson who made his fortune on the high seas, and the artistic traveler, Thomas. Alan uncovers their stories and that of another Shugborough resident: jet-setting earl and photographer to the stars Patrick Lichfield. Meanwhile, Miriam O’Reilly seeks out a photographic pioneer at Lacock in Wiltshire, and actor Louis Emerick follows the ale trail from Shugborough’s on-site brewery to the hop farm at Scotney Castle.

@@cleverusername9369 incorrect. With respect, pirates attack any ship regardless of nationality.
Anson only attacked enemies during wartime.
Often during wars, private ships, 'privateers', were issued a commission to attack enemies as the Americans did on many occasions. mostly merchant ships were the preferred prey, victims of privateers.
The French speak of corsairs with a lettre de marque and so on with other nations.

Branding the poor - whose land they stole - on the face for begging?💣💣💣🕳🕳🕳💨💨💨💦💦💦🗨🗨🗨 Some of these rich were selfish, cruel demons from Hell - they got their gains by force, pirating, big-time stealing, land grabbing, murder, exploitation of the poor.

The original estate was owned by Catholic bishops, until Henry VIII destroyed the monasteries. I wonder if the Catholic Church would have claims on it, and all the other things destroyed during Henry's era. So in a way, the ground it stands on was "pirated" to begin with.

If you buy into the theories, the follies are anything but; they are complex pieces in a jigsaw leading to answers to arcane mysteries. Unfortunately no one left any clues and a lot of it has been discredited. Still a lot more interesting than mushrooms and photos of the Royals!

I am very annoyed by the photography man. The woman says, "So this is where he invented photography," him, "no, he did it in his head, this is where he did the work." Literally the same thing. Just a man correcting a woman for the sake of correcting a woman and feeling superior.

According to a special computer program dedicated to working out today's value of the British pound in the past, the equivalent of admiral George Anson's prize money from 1744 would be £77.000.000; a nice sum, particularly when you think that the hateful income tax did not exist in those days.

@@GuruRasaVonWerder Well, I have to say that figure represents the value of the Spanish treasure he captured but let's not forget that all prizes were divided proportionally between the crew. However, he must have walked away with nearly 50% of that. Anyway, he did not murder anyone, he just captured an enemy ship in battle. He was not a criminal as you seem to imply.
