The UltraSuede is only trim on sides of the seat (bolsters). As far as it being comfortable, how can it not be? It's soft UltraSuede. Think of it this way, when you get in your car and it's a hot summer day, leather can be screaming hot to the touch, you can stick to it and sweat (pre-ventilated seat days!). UltraSuede is a soft material where this doesn't occur. Unfortunately, it isn't anywhere that could stop you from 'leather scalding'! Of course, this isn't as big an issue any more. But it's a good example of the difference in material. ;)

First time watching you. Great review! The Peppercorn interior has grown on me. It's the lesser evil between Macadamia, which is beautiful, but so light it's scary! Or black or red, which aren't options for me. Thank you for reiterating that this is a LUXURY car and not built for performance. All to often, people focus on that instead of the comfort/lux factor of the RX. People who buy the RX are looking specifically for that. Want performance? Buy a Porsche. Want comfort with all the luxury features, go for a Lexus!

Just reserved a fully-loaded AWD luxury with the Mark Levinson sound system -- should get it in 45 days. This will be the third RX I've owned going back to 2008. Very disappointed in the 4-cylinder...the 0-20 MPH sound reminds me of a cheap airport rental car, but it eventually quiets down like my current V6. In the end, Matt is right about performance vs. luxury (can't have both in this version, so I choose luxury). My only worry is having the instant power to get out of the way of the jackass who just ran a redlight and is barreling toward me. Crazy tech...concerned it will be too complicated for the wife, but I'm an engineer, so NP. Love the ride -- smooth and quiet. Time will tell if I like the car; will certainly miss my current RX when we part ways.

Nice review but Lexus dropped the ball on the RX.
If anything, I would take the Toyota Venza over this car.
Getting rid of 6 cylinder was a gut punch as older gen models take regular gas. I'll never understand the hype around touch screen. Physical buttons work so much better IMO.
If consumers were to stay in the premium market, I feel Genesis or even Acura may be better options at this point. Hopefully like other RX models, Lexus continues the trend of reliability

I can’t leave the honda line as it was spcaious and feel you get more for the money and not upgrading to get the top end trim and for that reason I move to MDX Aspec ‘22 it has V6 still and comfort and performabce oriented SUV formthe money and it has bigger soace and ulgraded interior.

The exterior is just awful. Not quite to the level of polish that we see in the x5, gle, xc90, gv80, MDX, aviator, grand Cherokee, xt6, qx60, cx9, telluride, palisade, Santa Fe, nautilus.
The interior is not luxurious at all. In fact take out the Lexus logo and the first thing you’d say is “nice interior for a toyota”. The interior has nothing on any of those rivals mentioned above. Nothing. Where’s the leather plastered everywhere on the doors and dashboard? Where’s the wood trim? Where’s the design? Where’s the opulence? Where’s the elegance and warm feeling interior? You don’t get any of those here. You get the same injection molded plastics you find in a Toyota on the dash and doors. You also get the same hard scratchy plastics on the bottom of the doors as you find in a Toyota. If you compare the interior of a gv80, aviator, or grand Cherokee summit to the rx you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
No luxury features either. No massaging seats no lounge chairs, no air suspension, 4 zone climate control, etc.
The tech is not great either. I admit the 14in screen is cool but it doesn’t look well integrated and the infotainment isn’t as nice as the gv80 or grand Cherokee or telluride or palisade. No physical controls at all, no built in gps, and no home screen. The gauge cluster is really small considering you can now get a 12.3in lcd cluster in a Toyota Highlander and Toyota rav4. The heads up display is not great especially with those god awful touch sensitive steering wheel controls. And don’t get me started on those gimmicky door handles.
The legroom and headroom have shrunk inside vs it’s previous generation. From what I notice it appears there is less headroom. I admit I’m glad the cargo space is improved but if you want cargo space, get a rav4.
Then we have the powertrains. And as is typical with Lexus, they are nothing short of lackluster. The 350 uses the same 2.4 turbo as a lesser Highlander. 0-60 in 7 seconds. A 4 cylinder turbo doesn’t belong in the RX. It’s noisy and unrefined vs the 3.5 v6. Performance is anemic for this class. Before you say “the RX isn’t about performance”, remember that every single rival is as fast or a lot faster and many of them are even cheaper. Even the already heavier MDX is as fast if not faster. The 350h hybrid and 450h+ plug in hybrids come from the rav4 and Highlander and tbh, those two are more “it’s fuel efficient but why even bother?” Then the 500h is not really great. Sure it may sound cool on paper 367hp 400lbft but the performance isn’t even better than a Toyota Camry v6 or rav4 prime yet it costs significantly more.
The driving dynamics are just awful for the class. “Lexus driving signature” is virtually nonexistent. It can’t compete with the MDX or gv80 or the already much softer aviator and nautilus or tbh even a Mazda CX-9. Even the off-road focused grand Cherokee will handle better than this because of it’s weight balance and it’s rear bias.
The RX is comfortable and smooth I give you that, but it’s not quite as comfortable as the x5 gle xc90 aviator MDX type S grand Cherokee summit with their air suspensions, or the gv80 and nautilus with their adaptive suspensions. So the RX doesn’t really have the comfort advantage.
Then there’s the price tag. Sure it may be cheaper than the Germans but it’s not much cheaper than a gv80 or the grand Cherokee or nautilus aviator or those mainstream options like the telluride palisade cx9. Yet the RX doesn’t do anything better than any of those rivals yet it costs a lot and can get very expensive
Sure it’ll be reliable but let me ask you who cares about reliability in a luxury car? Luxury cars are leased not bought. even if bought most of them get rid of them in a few years. Plus if you want reliability just buy a Toyota in its top end trim and not get those gimmicky features the RX has. It’s practically the same car. As for fuel economy who cares? You don’t buy a luxury car for that…

    • @MattTheCarguy
      @MattTheCarguy  Год назад +4

You brought up some good and valid points but I have to disagree with some of them:
Exterior and interior styling in my opinion are definitely improved over the last generation in my opinion but than again it is a matter of personal preference. I found the interior quite luxurious and improved over the last generation. Sure Mercedes has my favorite infotainment MBUX but in order to get all options you have to spend thousands, Volvo's is not as good and very limited in options, Lincoln and Acura are horrible. GV80 is nice and functional and BMW like MB you have to spec it out to get the most of the infotainment.
As far as the performance, I agree it is super slow in comparison to the competition. I have not tested the plug in hybrid or the rx500 but the 350 needs help. BTW it is not unusual for premium vehicles to share powertrains with their main stream brands. While I wish Lexus offered a v-6 option it looks like pretty much all with the exceptions of Acura MDX , BMW X5 and Lincoln Aviator (oh, and the Pentastar in the Jeep)offer 4 cyl as the base option.
The standard suspension is too soft in comparison to the competition. It floats on the road and that makes it a great highway vehicle but any bit of aggressive driving and you are done.
You can get adaptive suspension with the F handling package and standard on the 500, which would be interesting to see how it improves handling. Again the only standard air suspension is X5 I believe.
Overall I think it is a decent vehicle at a decent price point. If you are looking for a "fun to drive" vehicle than definitely go for the German cars. They have always been the "driver's cars"
Thanks for watching and your input!

@@naveenthemachine I was not crazy about any of these. Aviator was just ok. Summit unless equipped with 5.7 does not excite me at all. MDX felt better than RX but still underpowered. Its been a while since I've driven the CX-9. GV80 was the best out of all the vehicles mentioned. I am not arguing your point as far as the driving dynamics. It is definitely underwhelming but it always has been since the inception. All of the v-6's in the past were adequate at best but none were performance oriented.
