Took a break from scanning old pictures into the computer. Great song by a great group. Hit in 1960. Gal #1 born 1951, gal #2 1952, gal #3 my spouse of 42 years' secret.
Such a cute song - make us think of those innocent years growing up - life was so innocent then. Oh - to be 13 and 15 again - didn’t know how good it was - and then we have to grow up - Thanks Four Preps - let’s enjoy life no matter what age we are Thanks again
Ladies and gentlemen...after years of painstakingly researching a rumor I once heard, years which consumed a great deal of my youth, I can now firmly and conclusively state that this is the only song in the known world containing the word, "pufferbellies".
Yes, if a man can't get his Pufferbellies straight, what can he get straight??!!... in Kansas, at 4-H Camp, in the late forties and early fifties, we would sing the original version of this song as a round.... And we said Pufferbellies!!... :-)... :-)... :-)...
Hi Sharpy1, thank you so much for uploading cute and touching video - great "montage" of pictures, well edited and synchronized with the words of the song. That is what people looked like in my "American Graffiti" days (except for the cars/motorcycles which were older). Thank you for bringing me back to my time of innocence and freedom, thank you for the memories of "better days", you have a lot of talent, Ciao, L (Veteran)
I too, I've still got it along with Songs for a Campus Party. When I want to wallow in the mud of my youth it's The 4 Preps I put on (still got a turntable).
Here's my unlisted "Big Man" if you're interested. Was fun to make. The names have been changed to protect the innocent. Hahaha. ruclips.net/video/dBGDRNYraK4/видео.html
Such a cute song - I think every teenage boy 13 to 16 go thru this little - it was quite innocent at that age - oh to be that age again - to be so innocent and yet falling in love could be such a big thing part of growing up - And then we all have to grow up for real - those innocent years were the best up and find out
"Down by the Station,, a fun song by the Four Preps! You hear it on your favorite radio station, over perhaps, one of those cute little transistor radios. Then off to the record shop to buy your copy. Take it home, place it on the turn table and enjoy. A single 45 RPM probably retailed for about .75 cents. Yes, a lot of happy moments from the good old days. Shut your eyes, and remember. Sweet, isn't it?
+14Adam27 You were in the audience for those UCLA concerts that made it to vinyl as "Four Preps On Campus?" You lucky guy, I wanted to be there but was just an 11 year old kid in Seattle.
Great job putting the, video together with excellent pictures. Reminds me of the small town where I grew up at a much safer and simpler time. You have a beautiful wife.
the malt shops & corner drug stores, great memories!! reason I remember the corner drug stores, b/c I would get thrown out for trying to buy cigarettes at 16! lol!!!!!
I think of most if the modern music as "see rap" spelt cRAP. The people who like it, want to feel the music, because it is cRAP music, and has not much else to offer.
I guess Stephen Foster isn't enforcing copyright for "Swanee River". 😄. "Find yourself a trolley that goes into the bay!" Is one of the better put down lines I've heard lately, though. I agree that the four preps adapted a kiddie song, not the other way around.
I tend to say things like he did to the first girl, but really mean it and have no other. If she gives me a sign that she wants to be mine, I can't stop. I'm like lightning striking again.
2:17 - 2:20 Used to watch some trucking video's and one of the drivers had pictures of the little engine with the smiling face. She encountered it at a truck stop as it was being transported to another location.
oh man which parent listened to this song around children that made them say this was their favourite song when someone was doing a survey of what their favourite songs were? because I'm surprised a song like this made it into the Barney songbook
Number 1 is a spiting image of my wife. I've shown this to many people who believe she's is my wife. My wife was born in52. If I knew how to paste I would show you that picture
Haha. You caught that. I soloed that Cherokee 140 at 16. Gal # 2 was my first passenger. They both (airplane & her) have always been in my thoughts and bring good memories to me yet.
Ha! Thanks for the reply. I soloed a 172 on my 19th birthday. 3718L IIRC. Thanks so much for your post. Such memories from those wonderful years. I was born in '44.
I never knew it as a kid's song but I guess that may have been its start as per Wikipedia: The Four Preps recorded a version of "Down By the Station" in 1959, featuring an entirely different set of lyrics by group members Bruce Belland and Glen Larson. It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100
So this is "Down by the Station" pre-"kiddification". I recognize the last verse from my childhood, and sadly, that's probably the only verse from the original version that's widely recognized now that the song has been "kiddified".
should have used only pure vintage early 1960's (1960 I think was the year the song came out) pictures. Thomas the steam engine is a 1990's tv show and the cars and pick up truck are from much after the early 1960's. of the pictures are all vintage this would be a perfect video/slide show to the song.

50's and 60's were a fantastic time to be alive.
True till 65. When I landeed in Vietnam. 😅😆
The 21st century sucks,if time travel was possible this would be the era I would go back to
Unhappily, they don't make them like this anymore. The story it tells
is rather humourous!

Ladies and gentlemen...after years of painstakingly researching a rumor I once heard, years which consumed a great deal of my youth, I can now firmly and conclusively state that this is the only song in the known world containing the word, "pufferbellies".
Actually the word is Pufferbillies taken from the English children's words for steam engines "Puffing Billies"
Which itself was taken from the name of one of the earliest steam-engines which was named Puffing Billy.
Yes, if a man can't get his Pufferbellies straight, what can he get straight??!!... in Kansas, at 4-H Camp, in the late forties and early fifties, we would sing the original version of this song as a round.... And we said Pufferbellies!!... :-)... :-)... :-)...
I love the last 2 verses: The philandering singer got his comeuppance, while life went on about him. Love also seeing Thomas at the end!
Comeuppance! Thanks for teaching me a good new word =D

The Preps deep and rich harmony is at its best here.

Great group and song.
One of my all time great memory songs from Junior High....WELL DONE !!
No. 1 is very pretty also.
Wonderful photo op telling the story of the song. Absolutely beautiful.
You deserve a million
for making this gem of a song.
If this song was written today, the guy would have been outed on Facebook...
I want all three, because I can’t makeup my mind.

As a little girl my beloved uncle introduced me to this sweet song! Thank you for posting! ❤️
With all due respect, gal #1 is the prettiest. Catchy tune and nice story.
great pics to a great song
Great song. Originally recorded around 1958. Had the opportunity to see them in concert while attending UCLA. Fantastic performance.
+14Adam27 You were in the audience for those UCLA concerts that made it to vinyl as "Four Preps On Campus?" You lucky guy, I wanted to be there but was just an 11 year old kid in Seattle.
Agree! Still love the sixties!
Nice tune. From that period in the early 1960s before the Beatles which were really more a continuation of the 1950s before every changed overnight.
Love this song-nice memories-
Great job putting the, video together with excellent pictures. Reminds me of the small town where I grew up at a much safer and simpler time. You have a beautiful wife.
Thank you.
I haven't heard this song in decades. I remember when it was released! Thanks for the post.

To bad they don't make songs like this anymore :(
There was a girl in my 10th grade class that was almost a dead ringer for #3! As for #s 1 and 2... think Ginger and Mary-Ann. TOUGH choosing indeed!
What school?
E.C. Goodwin Tech, CT 1963

Best pop music was late 1950's and early 1960's. What passes for music today is &^%$!
I'm thankful for RUclips. Have a nice Thanksgiving tomorrow.
Well done! Always dreamed of doing this with this song. I like them all but stick with #1 is usually best. You broke the trend and won.
If you married #3....you have a beautiful wife!
Well thank you robbo. It is and has been an adventure. 46 years ago I thought it might get dull. HA!!!
Thanks. No. Made in the USA.
Great piece! Brings back memories. If you haven't, please take Mrs. No. 3 on a train rise somewhere!

Love this video and song! My favorite was # 1!! Hmmmm? Wonder where she is today??? Thanks for sharing!
Girl #1 looks like a girl I knew in high school. Her name was Mary and I have fond memories of her.
Hmmm, longshot, vacationed in northern Indiana '69 ?
@@Scharpy1 Nope, Grew up in Michigan. Was in 11th grade in '69.

Thanks! Grabbed the station photo off the internet and now can't find, so don't know it's location.
You're right Carson City! those hairdos are NOT the 5Os! I also agree that it's a great song!
Come to think of it Scharpy1 that station might be in San Francisco.
yes, Alcatraz Island is shown.
Linda canción
I think this is the band that SCTV got its 5 NEAT GUYS spoof from.
I heard a different version of this song on a kiddie record back in the early 1950s
the best variety a guy could have.
I'll take #1 and 2. ;o)
One pretty girl, then two, and finally three...and still goes home alone!
Talk about a "player" outsmarting himself.

darthsideous 1968, it reads as if you are saying today's music is better.
I'd have stayed with #!. She's a doll!
Sweet Pea, by Tommy Roe, is a song that resembles this song.
should have stayed with #1or at least 2
The beauty is, I'll never know... So far (50 years), no regrets. 🤥😉😇

Written by Glen Larson. Who also happens to have created and produced Battlestar Galactica.
Interesting!
Remember?
Anybody know the name of the number one girl? She's a doll.
I agree, Al!

Lyrics
Down by the station early in the morning
Met a little girl about as cute as she could be
I turned on my charms and told her that I loved her
I said that she would always be the number one for me
She'd always be my number one girl
I said there'd be no number two or three
Down in the malt shop shortly thereafter
Met another girl about as cute as she could be
I looked for number one and when I didn't see her
I told number two she was the only girl for me
Went to the drug store and nearly lost my life
There I saw my girlfriends, one and two
Standing there together, I knew I was in trouble
But I'm a clever guy I knew what to do
I went on down by the station early in the morning
I was wooing women as cute as they could be
But then I saw another girl lookin kinda pretty
I said I'm through with one and two
I love you number three
I said I love you number three
And here's what she said to me
Just head on down by the station early in the morning
Catch yourself a trolley car that goes into the sea
I want a love that's true sir, not a love like you sir
You weren't true to one and two
You won't be true to me
Down by the station early in the morning
See the little puffer-bellies all in a row
See the station master pull the little handle
Chug, chug, woo, woo, off they go
Girl number 1, call me! ;)
