      Ross Best best way to fish for numbers.used em for years.its an excellent means to cover a massive amount of water at one time,and even possible to fish up and down the water collumbby useing various leader lengths and useing multiple baits to see whats getting the most attention.trotlines are a time tested old world means to fish.heavily used in the amazon still.despite the dangers lol.but here,we dont have man eating fish so its much safer lol.but jokes aside these people rely on this system to feed whole villages.the only other main method you will see them use is nets.they only use what will produce significant numbers.solid system and if used with some awarness and cuation its garanteed to land good fish.most of our 50 to 70 pound cats where cuaght on the trotline.and we had rods in the same area lol.the other known and effective method is closely related,and thats useing juglines.basically a single hook version of a trotline.i seen boats drop 50 of em in an area at a time.only thing to consider with them is to make sure they are ancored some how.cats tend to duck for cover after a strike if they are able.

    Nice design! Innovative and functional. I may copy it myself. I'd be interested in trying to bait it and feed it out like I used to do with my grandpa's trotline boxes. There were no plastic 5 gallon buckets back then so he used old wooden coke-a-cola boxes, he cut notches in the edge of the box and hung a baited hook in each notch, facing up and outside the box. We'd bait up 10 or 12 ea. 25-100 hook trotlines. The last thing in would be a weight with a few feet of line. So what we'd do is take a jug that was wrapped with 20-25 ft of line, tie a loop knot in the end, put the loop around the weight, place the pre-baited trotline box on the back of the boat (my job) toss the jug and weight and ease out in the boat, the baited lines would pay out of the box, as it got to the corners of the box I'd turn the box so that the baited line was feeding straight out over the back of the boat. When we got the end we'd attach another jug to the weight, stretch the line tight and drop it, the excess line was wrapped around the jug, the jug would spin paying the line out. The next day at daybreak we'd run the lines and reverse the process, feeding the line back into the trotline box, taking the fish off as they came in. The knot he tied the drop lines on with was the simplest knot ever, he'd run the line thru the hooks eye, the an over hand knot in the end, and another around the shank of the book and snug it up. It was earth to undo if a hook was tough to get out we'd just detach it from the main line and drop the fish in the bottom of the boat and keep going. Might not seem like a strong knot but he dragged in an 88 lb flathead One morning and he routinely caught 20-40 lb blues, channels and flatheads. One of my grandpa's favorite baits to use was grasshoppers. We'd catch them in late summer at night. Grasshoppers crawl up near the tops of weeds at night so the dew would dry quicker enabling them to dry out and be able to fly as early as possible. We'd go out at night with a flashlight and pick them off the weeds and fill a couple of gallon milk jugs which we'd freeze for later use. My grandfather also used ivory soap, skipjack, and some special homemade doughballs made out of cotton, ice cream, asefedida, fennel, garlic, and some other nasty stuff that I never did get the recipe for.

      I know what you are talking about because I have used those wooden jump boxes as we called them. I put out a 315 hook line with a stack of those boxes a couple of times. I can tell you that those boxes are much better than this bucket because the probability of a tangle is so much less with a jump box. I have read several times that old time commercial fishermen didn't put bait on their hooks. they would but out 45 thousand hooks per day and somehow catch enough fish to make it now worth the time to bait the hooks.
      thanks for watching

    • @dallasmore6703
      @dallasmore6703 3 года назад

      @@countrydirtkid4451 You're welcome. Uh, I'm gonna add one caution to baiting your lines the night before, make sure your pre-baited trotlines are locked inside something animal proof to keep the cats, coon, possums out of them! We baited up a dozen 50 hook lines and left them stacked in the boat inside the garage, but somebody left a door open and a couple of cats got into the trotline boxes, you can imagine the mess! My stepdad ended up having to dispose of several trotlines, cats and all, just chucked the whole mess into a dumpster.

    If You use large swivel snaps on your main line and tie your hooks on a loop it makes it a lot easier to take the fish off and easier to set because You set the main line without hooks and then go back over it putting your baited hooks on you just have to remember too close the swivel snaps then You have no tangles and no problems

    Awesome job!!! That is one of the best trotline mechanisms and general trotline design I've seen. Very thought out and a reason behind everything! And the video quality and editing was awesome! I want to see how you run your trotline. Tieing on to a tree and dropping one end off with a weight is one thing, but running a trotline in open water on a flat with only weights can be a pain in the butt and I've never figured out a way to do it safely and precisely. Do you have any videos on that topic?

    • @countrydirtkid4451
      @countrydirtkid4451  6 лет назад

      Thanks for watching, when I put it out I lift the motor all the way out of the water and drift with the wind. Since the hooks are 18ft apart I have plenty of time to free any tangles that arise. After I reach the last hook I let the wind tighten up the line somewhat and the throw the last weight out. Having the motor running when putting it out is scary so I lift the entire lower unit out of the water and the boat drifts sideways. Thanks again

    • @Gibsonguitarman89
      @Gibsonguitarman89 6 лет назад

      So that little weight is enough to anchor your boat also? I tried trotlining out of my 18 ft boat and now have a 24 ft boat. In the middle of the lake on a flat all I could come up with is put out a heavy 80 pound sack of concrete, tie it to a 8-12 pound weight with maybe 30 ft of string and attach trotline to small weight and terminate it in same manner with a small weight and a big weight. The small weights are enough to hold the trotline while the big weights help anchor your boat from drifting....I just always wondered how everybody else would approach trolling on a flat away from structure in a windy part of the lake

    • @paulkf5pv
      @paulkf5pv 6 лет назад +1

      Sounds like my problem. 21,5 foot boat. currently no trolling motor. a little wind puts a lot of pressure. I like this bucket though.

    see,this is exactly what i avoid when running these.all be it,these hooks are organised.but i never deploy or retreive a long line or trotline with hooks attached.i have seen too many times when a large fish decides its time to scram and pulls the trotline and all its hooks into the water.and possibly into the agler.people have died from this.yall do it however yall want.but personally i attach my droppers at the moment they get baited and deployed.and remove them as i retrieve.and besides safty,leaving hooks on the line is asking for a tangle.i want a problem free deployment.nothing at all against this design.this is one of the things i love about this feild.so many variations on how we put food on the plate.this system works for this guy,and thats all that matters.

      The swivel sometimes gets tangled and wrapped up in the dropline as the river current twist it continuously. A second way to swivel takes care of the problem.

    I don't see the video on setting the trotline, though. I hope you can do that soon.
    One question: I looked you the monk's knot and it looks like a kind of monkey fist that you tie on the end of a line. How do you tie that knot in the middle of the trotline?

    • @countrydirtkid4451
      @countrydirtkid4451  5 лет назад

      this video shows a better explanation ruclips.net/video/LOLCRkYXbfw/видео.html
      I do this by keeping the twine rolled up on the spool that it came on. Instead of passing the tag end through the loop I just pass the whole spool through and then tie the knot. I then unroll the spool a little and tie the second knot. You need to have all the swivels that you are going to use already on the line. Good Luck. The river where I live is massively flooded now. I should have a vid of this trot line in action next month

    Great idea, the only thing I would change....get rid of the knives on the bucket....have a knife on your hip/vest or somewhere within reach and a spare "pocket" knife in your pocket. This way, there is NO pull on the strap and it keep your hooks tighter on the bucket. Just my zero point zero two dollars worth.

      At the time I made this my channel got just a few hits per month. I gave up making trotline videos. This spring I plan on doing more.

    That would take too long to reef and i wouldnt want to untangle a line thats in the bottom of a bucket also you would only be able to make a 50 hook line.

      My videos get more views depending on what season it is. I'm a trapper so about Nov-Feb I get a lot more views and comments. Also the title of your videos are pretty important the term "click bait" is used in RUclips a lot now. I don't like the way RUclips does things sometimes but if you read up on the trends a little you can get more views. Keep up the good work man your doing great.

      Country Dirt Kid probably word got out or people shared it and it started to gain a good rating after we started liking it. RUclips is a crap shoot it prefers big companies.
