It bothered me that in this season they indicate that Supes make ONLY fake saves. In the prior seasons, they did actual work (because why wouldn't they) they just also had a lot of collateral and were also often egotistical degenerate monsters. Maeve talks about the bus of children she saved, bluehawk overpolices black neighbourhoods, Stan Edgar indicates cities hire supes for policing with allowance for a 30% casualty rate in the contract. There are a lot of indicators that it's not *ALL* staged but this season walks that back. It makes things feel less nuanced.
A lot of the metaphors and analogues in this show are just kinda falling apart. I know the comics used it and the animated anthology touched on it but it is getting weird that Vought don't have a line up of Z Tier Supes who can take a beaten and come back next week as a line up WWE Heel type villains. But I guess if you bring that up, well then those are actual vllains but they might be alright guys with a 9-5, and then the whole "all these superheroes in media are actually evil if you think about it" falls apart because, well a guy with superpowers who struggles for work is just regular spider-man.
Also it's weird Supes wouldn't be in the government already. It goes against democratic values unless they are saying American isn't a democracy where anyone can be president

I started listening during the beginning of the pandemic and will continue listening for as long as you do this. In regard to The Boys and Huey’s dad getting V, I’m sure others have pointed it out, but it was Huey’s mom who gave his dad the V. He got it, but changed his mind at the last second (realizing how dangerous it was and that he just had to let his dad go). I can’t remember if he put it down like an idiot or it fell out of his pocket, but it was his mom and not him. But, I do totally agree with the point it’s not okay for Huey, his mom, or any of them to do that and if they followed their morals his mom should be in jail for the rest of her life. But I liked that turn for Huey, precisely because he gets to the edge of going against his morals but turning back.
I figured Longlegs would be supernatural from the opening with Maika doing the psychic test and then psychic-ing her way through the evidence montage, but was pretty let down that it was just "lol Satan did it." The metal ball and weird dolls made me hope for something... I dunno, _weirder._ Make up your own mythos and go crazy weird with it, idk.

There's a series of comic panels when Ross is first revealed to be the Red Hulk and transforms that shows his mustache receding into his upper lip as he transforms, sort of as is his mustache doesn't grow with the rest of his body. It's quite dumb, and when Robert Maverick becomes the new Red Hulk, he retains his mustache after transforming.
My favorite part of Acolyte was when the Jedi find the guy who sold the poison used to kill a Jedi Master, and immediately offer him immunity from prosecution to give them the person who gave that poison to a Jedi Master. Like, intentionally selling fucking poison, poison that was used to kill a Jedi, seems insane.
James and Mason's opinions on SW get increasingly less credible. The argument that most of the complaints about the show are not important and just whining noises is a red herring. Sure the time discrepancies and small inconsistencies are a bit annoying but the real issues that matter have to do with the writing. the storytelling talent and "creative" decisions are horrifically bad. It baffles me that they can accept the writing of these Star Slop shows as acceptable storytelling from the largest media monopoly and most lucrative and beloved IP in history.

The idea that opinions, subjective evaluations of media, can be credible is wild. They aren't scholars. They aren't responsible for engaging every element of criticism-- they aren't defending the show in an academic or deep-dive forum. That you or anyone chooses to spend time engaging with Star Wars criticism and dissecting what you deem to be worthy or unworthy is a hobby. A critic who watches a show, hears a middling amount of criticism, and discounts it isn't wrong. They aren't Star Wars hobbyists. They're giving a mildly engaged, median-viewer review while also doing comedy bits. You either agree or don't agree. It's not a matter of fact. Approaching Star Wars like it's academics isn't mandatory to talk about Star Wars.

The thing that bothers me is that they'll happily slash bad writing apart in other movies or TV shows but for some reason don't seem to do the same with SW and I think Disney has to be held to a higher standard. Disney and SW have historically been in an unprecedented position to create generational, impactful, and innovative stories. Cinema is dying and Disney should be held accountable with their influence and capacity for incredible storytelling.

Yeah there are so many moments that took me out of it, I couldn’t watch that show without something insane or nonsensical happening. That was the last of them. Couldn’t keep watching after that.

In The Boys, gaining powers had nothing to do with being a kid. The reason the babies got V in the hospital was to make it seem like they were born with the powers. Not because they needed to be a baby for it to work. It also makes the baby grow up to believe they were born that way too. There’s a line early on if I’m not mistaken about how there’s some percentage of supes that still believe they were born with powers etc
The whole point of the lamplighter arc and the lab where they were testing V on people was because adult immune systems rejected the V and it almost always failed

Regarding Longlegs and her boss, it could have been a bit of the 90's male bravado of " I'm in the FBI and high up the chain, there's no way this could happen to me." Plus he was dismissive of the more out there stuff and seemed more focused on what was actually tangible. That plus the failure of Lee to properly explain things due to the haze she was in, and the very little time after it was broken, led to the tragedy.
33:22 RE: People complaining about the Acolyte - the thing about plot holes in stories is that every single story has a plot hole, or some level of suspension of disbelief, even if it's "magic isn't real" or "I know that guy isn't a spy, he's a famous actor." When stories earn enough goodwill, the audience willingly suspends their disbelief and ignores any plot holes, or at least makes a fun game out of explaining the plot holes. I think a lot of negative reaction to stories from certain vocal corners comes from them being predisposed to not liking a film/show before even watching it, perhaps, for a completely random example, because the show has a female POC as the main character and a wider cast of non-white characters, with most of the white actors in alien makeup. That hypothetical show would have little chance of earning goodwill with that crowd to persuade them to suspend their disbelief. There's plenty of other reasons why stories might predispose someone to not like it going in, or fail to persuade someone to suspend their disbelief. But certain vocal sections of the Star Wars fandom have history with racism and misogyny. I don't think they're going to stop blowing plot holes and inconsistencies out of proportion for any story with a diverse cast.
Going good to evil to good to evil to good entirely unmotivated isn't a mere "plot hole" when it's the entire reason the show exists; the writers should probably try to write character motivations for the driving narrative force of the show.
If Giancarlo Esposito isn't GW Bridge, maybe he's Agent Pratt? He does have history with the Hulk. And I can't remember exactly, but I am like 90% sure he got his powers from Department H, so he can tie into the Weapons Plus program
the acyolte episode 3 and 7 i think are the worst episodes of tv i've seen in the last decade tbh, the fight sequences are pretty ok, but the plot could have been put into 3 maybe 4 episodes and would have actually paced much better. The power of many chant should get someone fired, whoever wrote it, fire them.
Would be good if you used a darker background for these videos, I like to have them on when I'm sleeping but it's difficult with the bright white background.
The Russo's are great, but I just hope that they actually take their time with this one. Too many marvel productions are shoved out the door before they are ready.

I have two over-abiding feelings about the Acolyte: 1) It had some decent ideas and stuff in it, but it would have been FAR better as a movie than the drip-feed tv show it turned into. Could have really fixed the pacing issues and really focused in on the better aspects. 2) It really should have been a standalone story with a proper ending; I'm a bit tired of everything seemingly needing to have either a spin-off or sequel to get greenlit. There's nothing wrong with a one-season story with a proper ending. (I know folk may cite Obi Wan here, but I feel like that was screaming out "We're planning to do a Reva series...") Overall, though, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as folk seemed to think (for me, anyway). It wasn't GREAT by any means, but it was a mile better than Boba Fett, which was one of the worst things I've ever watched, and it did have some decent ideas and performances. Darth GoodPlace was the highlight easily.
Imagine if this show was 30% that episode where Darth Good Place shows up, instead of just 12%. I'd be a lot more forgiving of the show if it didn't make me wait hours through boring filler.

Was the timing really the issue? It was a topical joke (and a stupid joke as I said already) but if the joke really upsets someone, I don’t really know if more time is going to make the joke any less upsetting.
I think a qualified directory like Zack Snyder should follow my direction...and end up making a great Avengers movie that finally destroys DC which makes it the ultimate Avengers movie...segwaying into a new Universe of multiverses. Everyone's calls me the man, i disagree and plummet into a cycle of rebellion that ends with me as an old man telling my story to a journalist who's gets a movie out of it after I die. I have to agree. Sometimes I do feel like the boys care more about not associating themselves with the weirdo fandom than just talking about the movie or show. There are a few Wackadoos maybe who need to hear that, but for the most part I feel like it's preaching to the choir. I guess being internet personalities for nerdy topics will do that to you.
That's just untrue. People have been coming out against this show long before it ever came out. Mostly against the showrunner and they thought it was going to be overly "woke" by having a diverse cast and a lot of lgbtq+ representation and stuff. I haven't seen the show, but I have heard the pacing is bad, the mysteries get solved basically immediately, and it's just not that great. I wouldn't know because I haven't seen it, but I do know there was already criticism and hate for it long before we even saw any footage of the show.

The Acolyte was fine, fairly forgettable & boring but not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, average at best. I didn’t connect with the core story of Osha & Mae, at all. Glad we got Sol, Lee Jung-Jae was a delight to watch, Qimir was quite interesting. The cast overall was great if tbh wasted. The action was the standout, fantastic lightsaber fights & choreography, hats off to the second unit team. So yeah I didn’t hate it, it’s not worst thing ever like how the Fandom Menace far right group are describing it as, or the culture war weirdos are as well, I’ve seen much worse, not just Star Wars, but much worse television.
Kinda liked it, mostly for the same reasons you mentioned. It would be nice to see a second season with some better writing as that was the weakest point of it. And you never know, Lee Jung-Jae might pop up again, since nobody's ever really gone ;)

The thing that bothers me is that they'll happily slash bad writing apart in other movies or TV shows but for some reason don't seem to do the same with SW and I think Disney has to be held to a higher standard. Disney and SW have historically been in an unprecedented position to create generational, impactful, and innovative stories. Cinema is dying and Disney should be held accountable with their influence and capacity for incredible storytelling.

In The Boys, gaining powers had nothing to do with being a kid. The reason the babies got V in the hospital was to make it seem like they were born with the powers. Not because they needed to be a baby for it to work. It also makes the baby grow up to believe they were born that way too. There’s a line early on if I’m not mistaken about how there’s some percentage of supes that still believe they were born with powers etc
The whole point of the lamplighter arc and the lab where they were testing V on people was because adult immune systems rejected the V and it almost always failed

Regarding Longlegs and her boss, it could have been a bit of the 90's male bravado of " I'm in the FBI and high up the chain, there's no way this could happen to me." Plus he was dismissive of the more out there stuff and seemed more focused on what was actually tangible. That plus the failure of Lee to properly explain things due to the haze she was in, and the very little time after it was broken, led to the tragedy.

33:22 RE: People complaining about the Acolyte - the thing about plot holes in stories is that every single story has a plot hole, or some level of suspension of disbelief, even if it's "magic isn't real" or "I know that guy isn't a spy, he's a famous actor." When stories earn enough goodwill, the audience willingly suspends their disbelief and ignores any plot holes, or at least makes a fun game out of explaining the plot holes. I think a lot of negative reaction to stories from certain vocal corners comes from them being predisposed to not liking a film/show before even watching it, perhaps, for a completely random example, because the show has a female POC as the main character and a wider cast of non-white characters, with most of the white actors in alien makeup. That hypothetical show would have little chance of earning goodwill with that crowd to persuade them to suspend their disbelief.
There's plenty of other reasons why stories might predispose someone to not like it going in, or fail to persuade someone to suspend their disbelief. But certain vocal sections of the Star Wars fandom have history with racism and misogyny. I don't think they're going to stop blowing plot holes and inconsistencies out of proportion for any story with a diverse cast.
Going good to evil to good to evil to good entirely unmotivated isn't a mere "plot hole" when it's the entire reason the show exists; the writers should probably try to write character motivations for the driving narrative force of the show.
If Giancarlo Esposito isn't GW Bridge, maybe he's Agent Pratt? He does have history with the Hulk. And I can't remember exactly, but I am like 90% sure he got his powers from Department H, so he can tie into the Weapons Plus program

the fight sequences are pretty ok, but the plot could have been put into 3 maybe 4 episodes and would have actually paced much better.

It was alright. I saw Oddity the night before I saw Longlegs, and Oddity was waaaaay better.
I have two over-abiding feelings about the Acolyte:
1) It had some decent ideas and stuff in it, but it would have been FAR better as a movie than the drip-feed tv show it turned into. Could have really fixed the pacing issues and really focused in on the better aspects.
2) It really should have been a standalone story with a proper ending; I'm a bit tired of everything seemingly needing to have either a spin-off or sequel to get greenlit. There's nothing wrong with a one-season story with a proper ending. (I know folk may cite Obi Wan here, but I feel like that was screaming out "We're planning to do a Reva series...")
Overall, though, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as folk seemed to think (for me, anyway). It wasn't GREAT by any means, but it was a mile better than Boba Fett, which was one of the worst things I've ever watched, and it did have some decent ideas and performances. Darth GoodPlace was the highlight easily.
Imagine if this show was 30% that episode where Darth Good Place shows up, instead of just 12%. I'd be a lot more forgiving of the show if it didn't make me wait hours through boring filler.

James and Mason's opinions on SW get increasingly less credible. The argument that most of the complaints about the show are not important and just whining noises is a red herring. Sure the time discrepancies and small inconsistencies are a bit annoying but the real issues that matter have to do with the writing. the storytelling talent and "creative" decisions are horrifically bad. It baffles me that they can accept the writing of these Star Slop shows as acceptable storytelling from the largest media monopoly and most lucrative and beloved IP in history.

That's just untrue. People have been coming out against this show long before it ever came out. Mostly against the showrunner and they thought it was going to be overly "woke" by having a diverse cast and a lot of lgbtq+ representation and stuff. I haven't seen the show, but I have heard the pacing is bad, the mysteries get solved basically immediately, and it's just not that great. I wouldn't know because I haven't seen it, but I do know there was already criticism and hate for it long before we even saw any footage of the show.

The Acolyte was fine, fairly forgettable & boring but not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, average at best.
I didn’t connect with the core story of Osha & Mae, at all. Glad we got Sol, Lee Jung-Jae was a delight to watch, Qimir was quite interesting. The cast overall was great if tbh wasted.
The action was the standout, fantastic lightsaber fights & choreography, hats off to the second unit team.
So yeah I didn’t hate it, it’s not worst thing ever like how the Fandom Menace far right group are describing it as, or the culture war weirdos are as well, I’ve seen much worse, not just Star Wars, but much worse television.
Kinda liked it, mostly for the same reasons you mentioned. It would be nice to see a second season with some better writing as that was the weakest point of it. And you never know, Lee Jung-Jae might pop up again, since nobody's ever really gone ;)
