As i got older I started to have the same health problems the rest of the African American relatives in my family have. High cholesterol and high blood pressure and heart disease. But my wife is Japanese, she never changed her diet and continue to eat food she was raised to eat. Very little meat, no red meats, some fish. But the majority of what we eat are vegetables, rice and fruits. We even stop eating meat. My blood pressure and cholesterol are now normal, which my doctor said is very unusual for a African American my age. Your body reflects what you put in it.🍠🥕🍏🥦🥑

I'm from the Philippines and I visit Japan at least twice a year for 3 weeks at least. Simple difference. When I'm home, I am highly cautious of my diet. Veggies and fruits here are grown w high use of pesticides. Meats are very fatty and feeds are either questionable. Going to grocery store is a tough job selecting the safest food to buy. In Japan, food purchase is just easy since they are fresh, healthy and almost organic. Price wise, Philippines is pricy.... Unbelievable!

All excellent points but missed one of the most critical. Natto, fermented soybean, the world's most healthy food. One of the largest sources of Vitamin K2. Most Japanese eat it for breakfast. The Swiss also live long and get plenty of K2 from fermented cheese. K2 directs calcium to where it needs to go, bones and teeth, and away from soft tissues like artery walls and neurons.

I have lived in Japan and go back very often now these days. They really do emphasize healthy foods into their diet! Apart from fruits and vegetables, Fish is so healthy! And i also feel like they walk a lot like average 20,000 steps a day because public transportation are on time and taxis and private cars are super expensive! So even if you don't exercise a lot, just going to and from work and school is already a workout!

Dr. Itam is absolutely my kind of doctor. She is emphasizing the need for nutritous food quality, nutrition, and personal care of the body through cleanliness. United States Americans focus on "rich and famous"and money. In my area, which is the Balkans, countries including Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro. People used to live over 100 years for women and men between 85-90. Just up until a couple generations ago. And their diet consisted of very greasy, salty meat, every day, (people close to the Mediterranean had some fish in their diet) mixed with some local vegetables like beans cabbage, peas, carrots. etc.. Also a lot of dairy products, people had their own cows, they maid cheese, sour cream, clotted cream, all high fat content. Also everything was cooked mainly with animal fat, instead of oil. White bread was included with every meal. And now most of the people have moved to big polluted cities. If I was on that kind of diet today I would die at 45, 50 probably. But the thing is back then the water was from clean natural sources, animals ate food without herbicides, and plants were grown in natural soil, they used sea salt mainly. Today we call that food organic. Back than it was regular food. So I feel that the modern day pollution in our food, air, water, must be a big factor.

I am not familiar with the traditional diet of the Balkins. They might be an exception to the rule. You might find Blue Zones interesting. They are areas of the world that live unusually long healthy lives. They tend to eat a lot less meat than we do here in the USA. In fact, the Loma Linda, California Blue Zone, includes many Seventh Day Adventists who are all completely vegetarian or vegan.

The traditional diet of the Balkans is, when the Czar's impressment squad comes around to get you into the army, suddenly you hand them your daddy's birth certificate and tell them you're too old.
This improves your life expectancy because you get to skip a war or two. It also does wonder for the life expectancy figures because everybody's reporting the numbers they get from the dumb army folks.

What's missing is the spiritual side of the Japanese person's lifestyle. The spirit of independence works very strongly for sustaining a healthy strong life. Also participating in the community and inspiring to be creative and reflective. The Japanese women have more ingenuity to cultivate artistic aspects of life, Ikebana, Tea Ceremony, Haiky/Waka poetry and other traditional inspiring cultures. Also, the Japanese women, especially older ones are spiritually and financially independent. They don't give a heck about conventions, politics, and social expectations. They thrive to be spiritually free more than anything else.

I want to add, I spent 4 years in Japan, and rice does not have the protein "Gluten" . Dr Wallach explains that the human was never fully able to digest gluten and so through many years of intaking gluten, it eventually coats your small intestine and makes it very hard for you to absorb the vitamins and minerals (even if you are taking them) into your blood stream. So be aware of this, all wheat, oats, barley, has gluten. Some people are affected by it quicker --- but everyone is affected LONG TERM and later on -- your intestine is fully glued by this stuff.

Great episode Dr. Sarah and Neil ! Really enjoyed the extra touch of the motion graphics - my mom was an intense health nut introducing me to japanese health foods from a very young age -that plus the habit of walking in nature , meditation , soaking in hot springs regularly and drinking tea have all helped me rise above the modern western lifestyle . I always get into trouble Whenever I drift too deep into the sugar saturated and processed foods of the modern world . The big hidden danger is the SODIUM MODIFIERS they put in most packaged foods !! I suffered for years from horrible migraines until I realized that Msg and sodium BENZOATE are even widely used in (seemingly harmless) things like sauces , chips , sodas etc. The FDA allows it because it is treated as a “necessary’” preservative . But the dark truth is that it’s a potent flavor enhancer that increases sales because these are basically drugs for your taste buds= hyper stimulating your brains pleasure response to food - causing migraines and many other complications for thousands - NESTLE EVEN PUTS SODIUM MODIFIERS IN ITS ‘PURE’ WATER ?!?! I got lucky and used a food diary and the basic scientific method of tracking my results to finally nail down the culprits . I’ve been migraine free ever since -Doesn’t matter what country your in -READ THE LABEL OF INGREDIENTS !! eat fresh food you cooked !! and if you eat/drink something that comes out of a box/bottle READ THE LABEL!

However, the younger ones are now trying to copy "the west", and have imported many bad habits such as smoking and drinking.

Well done video! With the massive Western (American) influence on all aspects of the Japanese lifestyle after the World War II, an increase in cancer and heart diseases are notable.
Food additives, preservatives, hormones for growing fish are few of the suspects. Air and water contamination? Of course Japan has them. Indigenous diet, exercise, avoidance of excessive convenience, conservation of the nature and spirituality also play great roles in one's fulfilling life. Living healthy and long doesn't satisfy anyone unless one has an ideal and purpose in life, also an attitude to appreciate and enjoy it. Even small attempt such as growing vegetables, caring and sharing, respecting others and the nature, forest bathing, being close to the nature will enhance one's health and spirit. At the end of the day, we all must realize life is only one chance to experience everything on earth. Borrowed time.

Recently found out that brown rice, though lower in calories, isn't healthier as it contains enzymes in the husk that prevent absorption of food nutrients into the body.

Old people used to live to their 90's ;stay thin and grow leathery and tough because they spent their earlier years in daily physical labor. However, in the evening they got on with living life..taking organic meals, visiting folks and making little baby country people. Then somebody got the idea of moving to some city and getting a "job". All down hill from there..

Diet & exercise is the main thing. Even if a Japanese does own a car, he/she is likely to ride a bicycle to the corner store. The way cities in the US are planned with suburban sprawl, it is more difficult to cover vast distances by bicycle in a shopping trip so going by car is the norm. The other thing is that places with healthy populations tend to have close-knit network of relatives (extended family) & friends. Otherwise it is common for older people to have depression to some degree. People who are engaged in various activities like dancing, art, playing music, playing cards etc. have a more positive outlook on life (in the case of Japan Karaoke).

I really enjoyed this video. the doctor presenting is gorgeous very insightful. my husband and I are incorporating a lot of these things in our daily routine and they have made a definite difference especially consuming more seafood instead of red meat choosing a walk versus driving and not to mention proper sleep that does play a big factor. I'm very happy I found this video it makes me feel that what I'm doing is the right thing to turn my health around.

You are not recognizing the fact that there is a huge cultural gap between Britain and Japan. Japan is an Asian culture with a totally different value system, family values and interpersonal relationships which are practically non-existent in western culture

I'm from Japan and I know Mediterranean or Caucasus cuisine is similar to Japanese cuisine.
They eat fish, vegetables and fermented food, and have longevity.
And I guess Italy or Greece has more conservative society like Japan compared to Britain in terms of value system, family values and interpersonal relationships. If Britain go back to traditional way of life (like South Europe ?), they will probably eat less meat and processed food.

On the one hand we need a healthy lifestyle, sports and friends, etc. in order to postpone and slow aging. On the other hand, if we want to be able to live in a truely young and healthy state for as long as we want, we should do our best to support the SENS Research Foundation and other non profit research organisations with the target to finally cure and undo age relateted diseases.

processed foods. the answer is in the food we eat. the amount of corn syrup and culture of eating THREE meals a day is absurd.
i myself started the keto diet (low carb based), eating more fish (protien) and interment fasting (eating one meal a day).
i've never felt more healthier or focused.

While sitting in an onsen may be healthy, it is unlikely to be a real factor inn most Japanese people's health. Visiting an onsen is a special, vacation-type occasion for most of them, like visiting Disneyland for Westerners, so this infrequent activity is unlikely to have a significant effect on overall health.

    • @designorbit7418
      @designorbit7418 6 лет назад +5

You're referring more to the younger Japanese. The video specifically deals with the "traditional diet and lifestyle", particularly of previous generations who visited onsens far more regularly than their children and grandchildren do.

She fails to emphasize the excessive processing of foods in the west. The fish benefit is largely substitution of worse meat. Low dairy consumption helps too.
