- More and more people say they don’t feel safe going into downtown Memphis after recent crimes in the area.
In a three-part series, WREG Investigators are digging deeper into the problem of crime downtown, looking at the mounting concern, the widespread impact and possible solutions.

I was born and raised in Memphis and now have a child. I’m getting the hell out of this city soon and will never look back. It’s toxic and dangerous and bad for my mental health.

Visited Memphis about 8 months ago and will never go back. Downtown smelled like urine, was loaded with trash, filled with homeless, vehicles with plastic over windows from break ins, and it didn’t feel like a safe environment. The ribs were good though. 😅

Reality won’t kick in. “The good people need to just keep coming downtown…” these business owners say? No, The city leadership has to GET SERIOUS about protecting people from crime and criminals. 30+ years of a terrible crime problem with which we refuse to correct.
Andrew needs to run for office or be a part of the task force that leads action - the most articulate framing of the issue.

When I was a child downtown was the safest place to go we could walk the fountains on main street go listen to live blues artist playing on the side walks get a slice of new York style pizza and walk to the riverside in peace.. now I go down there and the biggest building we have in our city is abandoned windows bust out building cover with wood city hall looks like it’s about to cave in and none of the criminals are scared to do crime in front of 201.. that’s scary when the headquarters of the MPD in the heart of town and still people getting shot robbed and just plain bullied by the criminals.. but threw it all I love Memphis for what it was not what it has become.. a steady grip on law enforcement presence on each corner .. increase mpd bike patrol.. And more convictions instead of releases.. stop letting the criminals win.. they are even telling us I’ll be back out soon to continue… and they do.. I watched the evening news and they tell us it was a robbery or a shooting in downtown Memphis we see the perk get released on bond or bail only to become news once more.. sheriff jack Owen’s had this thing called jump and grap it worked they had every criminal wondering are they coming for them next so they thought twice of any illegal doings.. now that was a safer city.. the program worked.. downtown Memphis was a safe haven.. never should have taken our only amusement park away.. nor stop the mid south fair coming.

Nothing will ever change in Memphis because black leaders are either unable or unwilling to address the root causes of poor outcomes in Memphis.
We all know what the problems are but all we talk about is too many guns, mental health, and social Justice. Start focusing on the Root causes of chaos. Memphis is just a smaller example of Baltimore, St. Louis, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
Now pause for a moment and think about all the commonalities those cities share and those common attributes are the problem.
Time for people of color to look in the mirror and do an honest assessment of why we produce poor outcomes all over America.
