    can you imagine a regular software company focusing some time ENTIRELY on bugs and issues like this? anything that doesn't get in the way of selling rental licenses would be ignored, left to rot forever. blender doing it right!

      what are you talking about all software companies focus on bugs and issues even offer 24/7 support for Studios which Blender devs can't do...they are now swarmed with bugs and problems because of the technical depth that 2.80 has brought, now they are forced to do this curfew which might lead to users being unhappy because some of their bugs might be closed as known issue and will never get fixed.

    I commented to blender today that they should have an episode on what is happenning on the day to day life at blender and these are the ones that we needed. a big brother feeling on all blender developer life at the blender institute.

    good thing, I hope it will help us all, another hope is that we don't move too much actual bugs to "documented flaws and limitations".

    I've seen so many bugs closed for the simple reason that they don't feel like fixing it. They say, oh that'll take a bunch of work... close the bug. They won't even deprioritize them but simply ignore them permanently.

      It's hard to reply without seeing an example. But if someone needs too long to fix a bug, than it is something that won't fit in the regular bug tracker allocated time. Instead it would need to be scheduled, so it is tackled as a regular development task. And if there will be no time in the foreseeable future to tackle this, then it is labeled as a known issue. This keeps the expectations aligned from both the development team and the user base (if you see something tagged as a bug, odds are it will be fixed in the coming weeks/months - as oppose to never/years).
      Worth reminding everyone that the list of known issues will be used also as an indicative of the state of the modules, and as a poll of tasks to be picked from (moved to the "bug" status) at the begin of every release cycle.

    Blender has always been great, but it's becoming something truly amazing. Blender's future looks very bright, but there is much work to be done!

    Bug fixes are a very important process. As a programmer, I know its importance. If you have created a software with great features and it has many bugs and you notice that you are late to notice these bugs and you have a set of classes, functions and modules to manage these bugs And the authors of the code who could have better understood its problem have left the workspace forever, then how will you manage this critical situation.
    In parallel, an artist reads about these features and is using them as usual and it is not working as then the reputation of the software will be down.

    Not sure if sweeping bugs under the carpet by renaming them "issues" will do anything good. Better prioritize them and take the time you need to fix them, even if it takes years. Users don't need nice looking stats but working features.

    • @prostagma3132
      @prostagma3132 4 года назад +2

      With that many open issues I feel like you have to prioritize correctly following some road-map, otherwise is a total chaos if issues are solved randomly for fear of "keeping them under the carpet" as you say. Probably this is the best they can do given their current resources.

  • @venator773

    Sooooo, half the bugs that are open right now just gonna be known issues that blender is not going to fix? Or i didn't understand it right?
    i'm concerned because there's a bug in 2.8, that makes dense fur grooming almost impossible dropping the frame rate to 3 when you edit guides, and it's been open for almost a year without any resolution.
    Happy holidays ~

    • @prostagma3132

      In the linked article it says more or less that their road-map gets blurred with that much open issues and they want to drop the quantity to less than 200.
      Besides from trying to keep a manageable amount of open issues all the time, they will probably pick from the pool of known issues as long as it reflects their roadmap.
      For example performance with eevee is something that is being worked on if I remember correctly so they will probably pick that issue as a bug as long as it reflects their goal of fixing performance.

    I've always wondered my more projects don't do something like this. I wouldn't mind being behind 2 feature releases to get 1 fat one filled with fixes.

  • @onjofilms

    Hope it works. I can't run any displacement on an 11 yr old mac without crashing, checked the bug tracker and saw all the crash bugs not fixed and just decided not to report it because it really looks like these issues are not being cleaned up.

    • @xox8717
      @xox8717 4 года назад +2

      This is not about 100% free bug but there are many bugs reported which are duplicates or missing info/known issues, but the bugs which are confirmed will be tackled, the goal is to reduce the number to a manageable size so they can work with ease and not have to worry about thousands of useless reprots that won't help in anyway the only concern here is if the report is valid but would take weeks to solve which then becomes as a known issue and could go under the carpet.
