Just finished about an hour ago. If you don't count 11/22/63, this was my favorite King book since the 1990's. So damn good.

Charlie Jacobs. Fantastic character. One of my favourites in the King universe. Sinister and compelling, but you can't help being sympathetic toward him. The terrible sermon is one of my favourite scenes in a King novel. Great review!

One of my favorite quotes is towards the end: “It’s hard for me to think of what happened next, let alone write it down, but I must, if only as a warning for anyone else who contemplates some similar experiment in damnation, and may read these words, and turn back because of them.”

I kinda viewed Charlie Jacobs as making a deal with the devil. He got his secret electricity from an old forbidden grimoire, full of spells and charms. He was given the ability to heal, but only at the price of death, Mother, coming to collect.

The revival of Mary was a super punch of horror that it shook me to my fucking core.

Fritz Leiber wrote sword in sorcery pulp fiction back in the day. Specifically stories about Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, barbarian and theif duo in the vien of Conan. The characters had a big influence on early dnd .

Peter Straub isn't from "across the pond". He's American, just like King...from Washington state, If I remember correctly. He only lied in the UK a few years, like King did.

Clark Ashton Smith wrote the short story "Genius Loci" which inspired the Iron Maiden song "Still Life". Look it up. It's a great, creepy story.

I love this book... but it always makes me a little sad how Jamie goes from loving Charles to practically loathing him by the end of the story.
