Leah,
You talk TO us and not DOWN
to us. Big difference! You are blessed with a natural gift for teaching. I listen to every single
word. Love Ya!!!
This video is the perfect example of why I subscribe here. Relatable, personable and encouraging. This is what teaching should be. Thank you for doing these videos.
Easily the clearest and most informative intro to hand planes I've seen yet. Nice job!
thank you very much!
I just love this woman. She always answers the particular problem I'm having with whatever tool or project she is working on. It is like she can read my mind through the computer.
It is amazing how many times she has helped me get done with my various projects and undertakings.
Thanks again!
Leah You are a good teacher. I have been doing woodworking for over 40 years, and have trouble teaching how to set a Plane.
you did it so easy. PS. I have over 30 planes, 15 was my Grandfathers from the late 1800s I am 70 now and learned woodworking from Gramps in his Cabinet Shop in southern ohio.
keep up the good work.
Mr Jack
Best instruction I have ever seen. And the ONLY one that told me about the blade up vs the blade down. Which means I have been setting my plane wrong for over a year and complaining about it not working right. Thank you Jane.
Hi From Turkey. This is Tolga. Yesterday i ordered my first planer and then started to watch videos about how to use it ,how to set it up. This video is best and most informative one i have watched so far. Thank you very much .
Thank you Tolga
This was the best video! I’ve searched everywhere to understand which way the bevel goes. I bought a couple planes and the blades were both set differently. Thanks for the thorough explanation!
I just bought a block plane for one small project I have at home and came straight here for clear, concise instructions on how to use one. Thanks!
Thank you, all these years you have helped me threw more projects then I can count. You're a wonderful lady
Ms. Leah, I will have to say that I've searched all over for a video that can really teach me everything about this topic, I found myself taking notes as you spoke, very well done, a well deserved like and subscribe, Thanks a lot.
We need more people in this world like you! It'd be a much better place. Thanks🤗
You are an awesome teacher.
Leah once again you've broken it down like a fraction. Again the way you dispense your knowledge makes it ez to follow and I've walked away familiar with another tool I've only speculated about using seriously. Thanks Leah, great job. Greg
you're welcome, Greg, and thanks so much for the compliment!
I just bought a block plane, and had no idea how to set the blade and use it. I watched half a dozen other YT videos on block planes, all of which were NO help at all. This is the video I was looking for ... exceedingly helpful, thank you very much for it! Subscribed.
I love all your videos. I, like the person who sent you a letter, found a block plane in the house I bought and I screwed it all up messing with the different adjustments. Now that I've familiarized myself with its components by watching your video, I'll go fix it and try using it. Thanks!
Thank you so much for breaking down the steps in an easy to understand but not condescending format. I love your videos... you make tools much more approachable. My dad was horrible at fixing stuff so I never really learned this stuff growing up. I’ve always loved woodworking but never could figure out how to adjust a planer. I finally understand the different parts now.
Glad to be of help, Rachael!
THANK YOU! I was having a devil of a time getting the mouth of the plane open. Now I know what to do! There's a bunch of videos on how to _use_ a plane, but yours is the best of the few on how to _set up_ one.
Thank you, Leah. You've just demystified the, oft maladjusted, minefield that was my block plane. No more lopsided cuts for me.
I love the way you teach. I'd watch your videos even if they weren't about woodworking!
Again Leah, a great video. I'm just going to look at all your vids as this is THE best channel just about everything concerning carpentry, woodworking and house repairs. Thanks to you, I can tackle jobs I was afraid to try without messing up, but now I can. Again thanks Leah, heres to 500k subs
Oh nice
Your teachings are enlightening even after 3 years posted.
Please carry on.
......Love from India
You are an amazing teacher! What a gift.
Mentioning how the plane should rest on it's side when not in use is great advice. Helps keep that blade from being dulled unnecessarily.
Superb - just set my no4 stanley up for the first time using this video and it works so well - been faffing about for ages and never got it right - thank you so much - stay safe
You are a very good teacher. Nice job explaining what the other videos I have seen have failed to do. Thanks.
I found my great-grandfather's old block plane in a barn and I tore it apart to clean it up and remove all the rust. I put it all back together and it's been so long since I've messed with a plane that I forgot how to adjust the blade to the perfect depth. Thank you Leah again you saved me!
how wonderful that you were able to restore your grandfather's plane. Have fun using it!
Awsome, Leah! I don't know when I've heard someone explain something so clearly and usefully. You've taken away a lot of my plane anxiety. Thanks!
Great video explaining the set up of a plane. I just purchased a #4 and your video came at the right time for me. I appreciate how you break things down so we can improve our work. Thank you.
you're welcome, Tom, and I'm glad the video was "right on time"...:)
Simple, loud and clear. The best instruction ever. Thumbs up!
Again, another wonderful lesson from Leah. You are the best!
Fantastic example of teaching once again. Your videos are always a great help.
hands down THE best tutorial on the plane! Thank you
My pleasure
Thanks, Leah. Very helpful. I was able to get my Stanley 60 1/2 working and was able to remove enough wood to get my swollen gate to close again. All of the rain in Southern California did a number on my old termite-ridden gate. The plane did stop working, however, and I had to mess around again and watch the video again. There's some adjustments with the blade and top piece that you didn't cover on the small plane and that would have helped. Learning how to use the knob on the back was key. Despite my problems, I got my old gate jerry-rigged and that's the main thing! Thanks so much for this video, Leah! Anita
Thank you Leah for this video, I have had a Stanley plane for many many years and just didnt understand how it should be set up. You are so amazing thank you for sharing this information
Leah, you're a friggin' ROCKSTAR! Thanks for all the tutorials and knowledge that you share!
The whisper of a sharp well-adjusted plane as it cuts through pine is one of the sweetest sounds around.
And I thought I was the only one that loved that sound!
Wish I had found your channel years ago. You're a gifted teacher and craftsman. /hatsoff to ya :)
Thank You Leah. You are so good at solving masteries.
👍On these two planes, you are the BEST instructor with super simple and easy explanations/steps for beginners like me, especially on how to set the depth of the blade: VERY smart 👌.
Thank you so much for your time and efforts in making and sharing this video. Wish you good health and good business😊.
Plain and simple. Thanks leah
:)
Another great video broken down into small chunks of information thank you.
you're very welcome, Matt!
Wow I've watched a number of talks about planes and the y NEVER talk about the basics. I didn't even know if I should loosen the lever cap to adjust, and on and on...and this is in basic planing posts. This gives me some foundation to build on. Thank you
Thank you. I too have messed up my planes. I didn't know how to fix them, so they are sitting idle in my shop. I have hope to use them again. THANK YOU!!!
Also, your video about woodworking v. Carpentry tells me that as I have been watching various tips, some are meant for carpentry. I expected woodworking or craft level precision. Now I will try to discern the level precision intended in the tips and pointers, jigs and tools. .
I had decided that I could not do precise work. Again, I'll try again, with this new awareness.
Thanks Leah!
Almost 5 years later this helped me to understand not just *what* a depth adjustment does but *how* to set it.
Amazing to listen to you Leah. Down to earth without focusing on the expensive tools but how to make the best with what you have and to use it properly. Just bought myself a Stanley Bailey No 4, and as you said, I jumped right down the rabbit hole but you dragged me back :-)
This is the best instructional video I think I have ever seen.
I have my manual plane for so many years and I didn’t use because it didn’t work for me.
With your video I learned how to use it and now it is fine. Thank you for your very good explanation of how work every part of the plane
Best explanation I ever heard. You are a gifted teacher. Thank you.
There are a few teachers I can really learn from..Leah is one of those teachers...Thanks!!!
Thank you Michael
your very welcome
The low angle block plane IS called the 60 1/2 plane! That said, this is one of the best if not THE best video on setting up a plane! Congrats, as a shop teacher, I highly recommend her at all times!
That was a great explanation. Nice, detailed, calm. The best I have ever seen. Thanks.
Great Job-clear, informative, no BS. Fron teacher with 37 years in classroom.
i have started watching your video’s, you are awesome. You saved me on a crown molding job, now I have a sears hand plane to put back together. Thank you!,,,,
I enjoyed the way you presented this. I am new to wood planes and have watched a lot of woodworkers and most of say the same thing but in different way. The way you do it was just made sense to me. Thank you. I have now subscribed to you as well.
Thank-you, Leah. This really helped me a lot. Stay awesome and well!!
I love this ladies no nonsense approach to videos
Thank you! I have watched many videos on this and have been so confused, I feel I can now adjust my planes instead of them gathering dust in the drawer !! :) I love your tutorials !
best video i've ever seen on how to get started using a plane.
thank you very much!
Thank you Leah! After years of giving up hope on my bench plane I decided to tackle setting it up correctly. Your video helped me achieve that. Now I am getting beautiful translucent shavings from a tool that previously was just taking up space. You are a gift to the public with the teaching you do.
bautiful video!! it's clearly explained and teaches all the thing a very beginner needs to know in order to make his/her first shavings.
Leah is an absolute star.
Leah, you are a star, many thanks for your excellent tutorial
Thanks for this video. I have been looking for this information for what seems forever. You are the best and even a dummy like me can understand.
Nice simple thorough explanation. Well done.
Marvelous tutorial on planes. Just what I needed to know with no mumbo jumbo. Thanks a lot Jane!
Sorry, Thanks a lot Leah!
:)
Nice simple thorough explanation. Well done. Tks Dave.
I just found you on RUclips and am so glad!! You are very engaging, knowledgeable, entertaining and all around awesome!! I feel addicted in just watching a couple of your videos. I have always loved the idea of " I think I can do that" or " I want to make this or build that" and with your instructions and educational videos now I feel like I may actually be able to make something that I can be proud of instead of something that turns out better in my mind. I thank you for being such a wonderful teacher and I would love to take classes if you were to offer them! Be blessed!!😀
Sincerely,
Sue Moore
Thank you, Sue...glad you found us!
I love your videos, so calming and encouraging
Great teaching as always. Thank you very much. You are my go to person for my training. Thanks again.
Thank you. I could have written that email, too! I had the same question and knew you'd have already posted a video with the answer. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge and experience for free!
Thanks Leah, this is one thing I have never known how to do until not. I'm not a woodworker but I have the Stanley planer that was my dad's. It's probably about 70 years old but a good one. Now, thanks to you, I know how to set it up and use it. Thanks a million. You must have been reading my mind. You mus be physic.
hi Leah great job in putting adjusting and setting up a plane in common terms . keep up the good work
Thank you Leah!!! What a great teacher you are. Just getting started in woodworking and this was very helpful.
Thanks again for another great video.
I now know more about my planes 🙂
Great information. I love the way you explain things. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
Adjusting a plane made simple. Thanks Leah.
Thank you Leah, that was exactly what I needed to see
60 is not the size but the model # of the plane. It appears that almost all other manufacturers have mimicked Stanley's model number for their planes also. I learned something new today too. Thank you for your videos Leah.
Thank you leah you have fixed a huge issue for me! I have a cupboard FULL of planes and had no idea how to use them. You are amazing at this!
Awesome Leah, thanks so,much for taking the time to simplify this stuff. Been doing woodworking for over 50 years but wise enough to know I've still got a lot to learn. Also I'm a slow learner!! Scared of using a plane but want to give it a try. I think I will now. Thanks!
I've learned quite a bit watching your videos Leah. You're very effective in the way you present the content of what you're teaching. I appreciate how detailed you are with your explanations. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing!
Thanks Jose.....I appreciate the comment.
After a few words of you explication, I liked you already. Real teacher tone of voice. Subscribing
Leah, thank you so much.
I received from my father in law a box of vintage planes which he'd bought, or inherited from his dad, and until now I've been too intimidated to use them, and the one time I tried I messed up the alignment. Now I feel like I can use them, which gives me great appreciation, and a way to carry on the legacy.
Thanks so much.
Nice!
Best plane adjusting I’ve seen. Thanks very much...
Thanks so much for such a straight forward video. So easy to understand.
Leah you are the best instructor! So glad to have found your videos. Keep it up, you explain it clear, short and sweet. Thank you for what you do!
you're welcome, Marijke, thanks for commenting!
Been a few years since I've used the plane, that is up until a few days ago anyway. I couldn't remember how to make adjustments, then this video comes up. Thanks for the refresher ;-)
you're welcome, Travis, my pleasure
I just got my first hand planer. I thought it would be super simple so I took it apart, then realized I couldn't figure out how to get it back together. Haha! I thought, "what would Leah do?" and here we are. Thank you for another excellent video! :) I think we need t-shirts, "WWLD"? :P
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I found a good deal on 5 old planes. They are in tough shape from rust and an accumulation of years of grime. I’ve turned the blades in for resharpening and will certainly refer to your video! Thanks again
Good stuff Leah, I just realized I had the blade the wrong way in. Really informative.
glad it was helpful!
Great instructional information. Nicely presented. Thank you very much.
You explain things so clearly and simply! I really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. Thank you!
Thank you, Leah! I have collected some old planes, but never did much with them as I feared going down the rabbit hole and never finding my way back :). Watched other videos, but still didn't know where to start. I like that you start with simple steps. I just watched your video on sharpening, too. I'm starting with my kitchen knives, then plane blades. You got some nice curls of wood and I aspire to that. Would you consider a video on sharpening wood scrapers? I'd love to use them instead of sandpaper.
You're so right....scrapers are a great addition to planes
thanks,I never knew some blades was up and some was down.I tried to set them both the same and no wonder those smaller planes didn`t work good!
Home run!! I purchased a plane a couple years ago and never figured out how to set it properly. Ended up using belt sander which can be very extreme at times. Thanks for the video.
:)
Awesome description of how to set up planes!
Perfect pointers for someone that never even used a plane. Thank you so much for sharing! Keep it up please... I like your style a lot!
thanks, Frank!
Damn! This was just what I needed to know! That final tip on wether the front screw is overtightened was priceless. Thanks!!
Very friendly and informative for an amateur like me thanks heaps, silly me set the blade the wrong way around for what I was doing and didn't even think that might of been my issue
