- Took a day trip to Nicaragua! Definitely a long day, but 100% worth the trip. We were super grateful to be able to see the sights and explore a new Country that we've never been to before. We hope you all enjoy it, and if you have any questions - do be sure to reach out!
Tour Itinerary:
5:30AM - Depart Riu Guanacaste
Breakfast at El Jardin Liberia
Cross the Border (Costa Rica into Nicaragua)
Lookout Point (in Rivas): Volcán Concepción & Volcán Maderas
Granada (Shopping, Catedral de Granada)
Lunch at El Almirante Granada
Boat Tour on Lake Nicaragua (see Monkey Island)
Volcán Masaya
Catarina (Shopping, Lake Apoyo overlook)
10:30PM - Return to Riu Guanacaste
Tips/ Suggestions:
🫧 Bring hand sanitizer. This is a full day of traveling within a third world country, with lots of stops. You never know when you will need it.
🌟 We highly recommend using the bathrooms at the restaurants (breakfast & lunch). They are the cleanest bathrooms you will see all day. All other bathrooms may be questionable; you’ll also have to pay to use the bathrooms once you’re in Nicaragua.
💵 When you cross the border, there will be an opportunity for you to convert USD to Córdoba. We only converted $5 USD in case we needed to use the bathroom throughout the day. We ended up not needing it, and spent the money on souvenirs in Catarina (small shopping village). Our final takeaway was that the conversion wasn’t really necessary. They accept USD in Nicaragua, you’ll be more than fine with having some singles on you. You don’t need to bring much money generally, maybe $10 per person (pending how much you’d like to buy). Also important to note, they don’t really accept credit card, venmo, etc. Cash is your best bet all around.
🍽 Most of these day tours return to the resorts around 9:00PM - 10:00PM. Depending on your resort, dinner service may be over. We advise to plan ahead and have food in your room for when you return, or to purchase snacks in Catarina while you can.
👟 Close-toed shoes are highly recommended, sneakers will be your best bet. There is a lot of walking, sometimes on dirt paths, so older sneakers would be the best thing to wear. We also recommend bringing a jacket, it can get chilly at night and at the volcano.
