  • Angels Landing Trail in Zion National Park, Utah is famous partially for its incredible views, and partially because of the terrifying half mile section where you’re hanging off the side of the mountain holding on to only a chain. Warning: this hike is not for the faint of heart. If you have a crippling fear of heights, you’d better pass on this one. Thankfully neither of us have crazy fears of heights. Spoiler alert: it might have taken us two tries to complete it, but we did finally finish the trail and man oh man was it worth it! Hands down one of the most beautiful hikes we’ve ever done!
    Life doesn’t always give you second chances at opportunities, but we’re thankful just this once we were given an opportunity to try again. Angels Landing is a crazy and incredible hike that we highly recommend. Just please be careful and respect those around you! Go prepared, take your time, and enjoy the views from Angels Landing.

    I lived in Southern Utah over 30 years and have been to Zion hundreds of times. I have heard so many people say how amazing the Angels Landing hike is, but I am deathly afraid of heights. But when I turned 40 I decided to face one of my biggest fears and attempt the hike. My best friend took me. I was so terrified going up, but she kept me going. The view is so amazing and will forever be seared in my mind. I am so grateful I finally went. The hike down was so much worse for me. The sandstone is slippery and when you pass people someone has to let go of the chain to pass. I cried the whole way down...how embarrassing!! But Im still thrilled I did it.

      Yep - even Alex Honnold when he started his climb without any ropes changed his mind when got about 20 feet up. He called off the climb as at a gut level he didn't feel things were right. Some days later he completed the climb.

    One of the most important things you say in this video is that you trust yourself but you don't trust other people on the last part of that climb. I did it earlier this year and folks were being ridiculous and impatient. It's an experience that can be easily ruined by that type of stuff. Safety first, at all times ✌🏻 Congrats on making it to the top. It's worth it in the end

    Congratulations on getting it done on your second try. I attempted the final section some years ago. I was doing good until someone on the other side of the chains bumped into me. My heart rate immediately went to about 150 beats per minute. When I got my heart rate under control, I turned around and went back. I have always regretted not giving it another try. Way to go!

      I think Angels landing is more scary on pictures and videos so you may not want to give up in it yet. I'm very scared of falling and heights and I conquered Angels Landing relatively easy but Half Dome is something I won't do as I got half way and swore never to to back.

    We had the permit and got there late September in the afternoon. So although they limit hiker numbers it was still crowded. My husband is afraid of heights and did not even want to try after I showed him some videos. For me it was your quote coming to my mind then: I trust myself but I don't trust people.
    I guess I could have handled it in a group of 10 who move one way accompanied by a ranger giving advise, or if hooked into the chains. We enjoyed the hike and the views before the chain section and made a younger and braver couple happy who wanted to do the final section but didn't win the lottery for a permit by giving them ours.
    I had goosebumps just watching your 2nd try! Way to go! 😮❤

    We just got back from a week visiting Zion, Bryce and others in the area. I totally understand your stance. People crossing the barriers, standing on rails, laying over the edge of cliffs, ect just wears on you over time. If they want to end it by being foolish that's fine but don't take me with you.

    I stayed at Zion National Park in 2002, and everyday, twice a day, I would run from the valley floor up to the top of Angel’s Landing. It part of processing a very hard life event and something about that valley helped. I’ll never forget a huge rainstorm that came through there and the sides of the valley began to be dotted with multiple waterfalls. I went pre season which is always the best time to avoid big crowds.

    I went three years ago, around the 4th of July holiday. It was 105 degrees, and I was about to undergo spinal fusion a few weeks later, so my balance was so-so. I realized as I got halfway along the trail, with hordes of people climbing over me, or trying to take selfies, that it was not the smartest thing to be doing at that point. I vowed to go back and finish it, but I'm starting to think that, if I never check this off my bucket list, I'll still be able to live with myself.

You were wise to toss our your pride and try the next day. now, next on my list is the Dome - so I will look for your youtube on the Dome hike... I hope can find it. Steep steep falloffs on both sides can easily freak you out. Next get a permit to hike the subway in Zions. Hiking with fewer people because permits required. Minor repelling, ropes required, the best part where you have to swim underwater to get through a hole. Lots of slot canyons keeps you in the shade and lots of hiking through the river. Awesome..i love Utah

    I am 67 years old now. When I was 8 years old, my family had a big family reunion in Zions. We did the Angles Landing hike ON HORSES! They used to have riding stables there and they led groups up there all the time! Going back several times since then as an adult, I cannot believe that anyone would ride horses up that thing to the top! What were my parents thinking??? A few weeks after we got home, my Mother told me that the guide who had led us up there, that his horse had bolted and they both went off the cliff and were killed.. I would NEVER let a child ride a horse up Angles Landing! I still have dreams about it occasionally!

    • @aliox1941
      @aliox1941 2 года назад +1

      Just to be clear, we rode horses up the exact way you hike up there now, to the top. Obviously we did not ride horses where the chains are at the very top, but had lunch at the top flat part just before the chains, then rode back down again. When I look at those steep switchbacks just before the top now, I just cringe thinking we were on horses going up those! It was terrifying!

      @chrisandsara  2 года назад +1

      Oh my gosh! 😳 I can’t imagine riding horses up that!! You’re definitely braver than I am! That’s a crazy and sad story about the guide, too. Definitely stay safe out there. Zion is incredibly beautiful but those drop offs are frightening.

      @@chrisandsara Well, I was 8 years old and just followed the family. There were probably 10 horses at a time, pretty mellow horses I recall (thank heaven). The guide had a more feisty white horse and as I had said earlier, his horse went over the cliff with him a few weeks later my mother said was in the news. Very sad. But it should never have been allowed! It is dangerous enough on foot but to ride a horse up those cliffs and switchbacks to the top, insane!

    We just got back from zion. Our neighbors at our camp site were from Germany and Switzerland, both experienced hikers. It was so crowded they almost made it to the top and stopped due to the crowds. He said people were careless and some not experienced. He trusted his gut and did not finish. Smart move, and they are experienced hikers. There are people up there that have no business being up there and make it risky for others. He said he is not one that has to prove anything to anyone but himself and it was not worth dying for.

    I would never be able to do this hike-way to afraid of heights. So April 2021 I hiked to Observation Point on the east side of the park and overlooked Angel's Landing. It was absolutely beautiful!

    Wow!!! That looks like it was quite the experience. I am so proud of you for going back and tackling it again. Three weeks ago we (brother and I) were in Chattanooga, and it made me think of you because we did some of the things you shared in your video. This is another video where I have definitely learned about some cool places from you and wonder if you will be in my thoughts in the future if/when I try this climb. Thanks for sharing such an awe inspiring view/hike.

    My brother and I did angels landing when we were kids, I was 6 or 7 My brother would have been 10ish. My dad had no clue, he would have been back at the trailer and was now called the grotto picnic area but then was a campground. The solid bridge you see them crossing over the river at the beginning of the hike used to be a swinging rope bridge, we would jump up and down on it and start to get it swinging back and forth. If you watch the movie The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood you'll see a pool and a bar in a scene. The pool was in front of the lodge, there used to be pictures of it in the lodge. Took my kids on Angel's landing when they were teenagers, think I might have been in my 40s this time, scared the crap out of me unlike when I was six. Anyway, thanks for the memories, and don't forget to turn left after you cross the river and go to the lower, middle and upper emerald pools, The upper emerald pool is totally worth the extra effort.

    I hiked Angels Landing last month. Angels Landing wasn’t as bad as I had envisioned. Obviously you shouldn’t go on Angels Landing if you’re afraid of heights in any way. Angels Landing is most definitely a hike that demands your attention and concentration with every step. Angels Landing is most definitely a hike that demands common sense. Common sense like not turning your back to a 1000ft cliff to take a selfie. A number of fatalities on Angels Landing have been caused by foolish behavior like that.
    There are some scary areas on the hike where you should feel some fear and nervousness. However, I strongly believe that having a healthy amount of fear and nervousness is actually a good thing that prevents you from doing something foolish on a hike like Angels Landing. Set your own pace on the hike, and be courteous to others in letting them pass you when it is safe to do so if they want to hike faster than you. The view from the summit of Angels Landing is absolutely amazing, and is well worth the effort! Personally I would hike Angels Landing again if I returned to Zion NP.

    Half dome chains seem so difficult! but about to do this hike and one of the worries I have is the amount of people on the chains. Hopefully with the permit, it isn't too bad!
