I don't think you can successfuly grow another full plant from a leaf (at least not with Schefflera). The leaf will indeed grow roots, so you can have a single leaf as a livable plant. It is cute, small office decoration, but one will be upset if he expects an umbrella tree from this cutting.
My landlord has had this house since the 80s we live on the same lot. He has an umbrella tree that’s two stories high. It was originally given to him as a plant in a pot. The One who gave it to him as long expired. So I cut just as much as I ever want. I live in Rosarito Mexico and there are huge ficus trees too. They just thrive here
Did several of these. They rooted nicely and look wonderful and healthy, but they've never developed into plants and never will because they have no growth nodes. I took the advice of another gardener and cut a small limb off between leaves and put it in water. It developed lovely roots and is now transplanted and growing splendidly. Six months later the little limbs you suggested haven't changed. Was this some kind of joke?
You really can't. Although the leafs will easily root they will never grow beyond what see here. They must have at least one node in order to grow into a bush. I have rotted one and it is still alive and green after years and it has not grown one bit. At this point I want to see just how long it will continue to stay alive without growing.
The video I spent weeks looking for. I knew I could propagate with a leaf but no one had videos on how to. I had to go on google when I found this vid. Sorry for complaining haha, thanks you so much for the video!

With a few exceptions, every plant's leaves bear roots with right amount of light and moisture but save a few like Jade, Sansiviera, ZZ plant and others, none will progress upward the soil. 1 leaf some roots and a misguided viewer. Thats it. Schleffera never bears shoots without at least one of the stem nodes. The nature of cells in the leaves and the stem are different.
Mine actually did but it took two years for it to snow some growth. It now looks like a leaf with two little leaf branch growing on it. Mind you the stem and the original leaf didn’t grow a mingle inch in two years.
My leaves rooted after 2 months and produced new growth the next season (over a year after I cut them. From mother plant). The bigger cutting I took with a part of stem is massive compared to the ones from leaves.

I got a mystery clippings box online and 1 of them was a single leaf like this. All the successful propagation things I’ve seen are either by pruning or air layering, but they are always from a main stem node and not a single leaf. Has anyone been able to produce new growth or do the roots just keep growing and keep the single leaf alive in perpetuity? I haven’t been able to find of single instance of a leaf without a node producing new growth, so if anyone actually has proof, I’d really be interested in knowing if it’s even worth the soil and time just to keep a leaf alive.
That’s my question!!!! How do new stems grow from the single leaf? I know you posted this question a year ago - but if you see this and have had this question answered - PLEASE tell me the secret!!!! I bought a very small starter plant 4mo ago. So far, I’m just “keeping it alive”. No new growth. But it’s only a few stems/leaves. So if I cut those off to propagate - will I just be keeping a bunch of singles alive then? Where does the new branching and growth come from and HOW? Please tell me you’ve found a solution! ❤

Hope this helps. Don't give up. 😊
Unbelievable.. where do you place the jar and do you cover it with anything. Please let us know the steps you followed in one months time from placing the leaves in water to the time it showed up roots
What kind of magic water do you have? I have a almost 1,70cm big Schefflera I wanted to propagate approximately 1½ years ago like you did and it took around half a year + for these little waffles to grow roots! I changed water every 2-3 times a week. And from the somewhat 20 leafs I wanted to propagate, only 8 survived, the other ones started to rot on the blob where the roots came out and died. I put the survivers in good soil and literally nothing happened in the past ¾ year except that now only two survived. I just took them out of the soil to check for growth and except the fact that they had a good amount of roots, nothing has changed. Ehh?! I even added a bit fertilizer and I'm not entirely new to plants.. XO
I have a leaf growing roots after just a couple weeks! I dipped the bottom in a little cinnamon then put it in the water and its rooted so fast! When this is planted will it grow a full plant?
I doubt it! I've tried it myself, and only when the schefflera cutting had a piece of stem did the cutting grew into a full plant. With just a leaf, it won't grow any further, though in a small pot it does make for a small livable one leaf plant.
I have one I just got from a lady. It's just one leaf like this how do I encourage it to branch out? Also one leaf fell off the top will that encourage more growth elsewhere? I've heard of notching but all I see is some brown rings around the base of the leaf I don't think this are nodes?
Every time I buy this plant leaves just drop off badly so I decided to put in today let’s see if it comes back maybe I keep it to moist not sure tried putting in clay pot too but I may have traumatized the plant before it got adjusted to my atmosphere.
Plants absolutely need sunlight, not directly as it's still delicate at this stage but light is definitely needed. Behind a window will be good enough. Blessings 😊✨
I have a set of cuttings that are in the water for like 2 months now. No roots at all but all alive. Why is not working? Should I try putting in soil directly? :/
Maybe not enough sunlight? And there are root grow hormone products on the market which I would reccomend! They're very cheap (like 5 dollars) on amazon and theyve worked wonders for my other propagations! :)
Make sure you take the cutting with the triangular tip still on the stem otherwise just a flat stem won't work. Look at the the buttom of the stem carefully... It should be like that... Good luck with your cuttings :)
I have mines on a window ledge. It gets bright indirect sunlight. Been rooting them for over a month. Thought of planting them but they roots look so pretty in water culture.
@@Jenjoshstars2012 Honestly no I just keep the vase I have them in full. I fill it up once a week. But one thing I have done is I use a rooting hormone powder on all my cuttings to help them root. It works great.

Ok so mine has been in water for about 3 months now. Regular water changes, tried aquarium water, tried fertilising the water, tried sugar, nothing, please help. I have succeeded with all my other plants
Why so many likes. My plant is in a childlike child size coma
Mine did nothing for 3,5 month other than produce those weird white bumps, but it finally rooted! I would suggest to just keep this guys in water and change it regularly. It will eventually root
Mine took a few months
@@dianacountry it did nothing but rot away in the end rip. It seems dark green waxy leaf plants dont like me or my VERY cold house
@@victoriawhyte5379 I'm a beginner but try your warmest and most lit room. I'm the summer or spring is probably the best time but I also experiment in the winter. Lol i change the water once a week. I also noticed sometimes if I put too much water, sometimes they rot. Sometimes they freeze if I put them too close to my windows because my apartment windows are old and let in too much cold air. Hope this helps. Don't give up. 😊
Nice video
Está planta crece bien en clima tropical.
Good video ji

Nice🌷🌸🍀💐🌺
When taking the cuttings from the leaves, am I able to braid them to make it grow as a braided plant?
I would think so but not too tightly
Unbelievable.. where do you place the jar and do you cover it with anything. Please let us know the steps you followed in one months time from placing the leaves in water to the time it showed up roots
Does this work because i luv this umbrella tree i do have one and im thinking of buying another one
Dziękuję... :)
Thanks for sharing, can I transport plant from soil to water?
XO
Qué ganas de vivir tenían las pobres plantas.
Jajjajajajajajjajaja

I have a leaf growing roots after just a couple weeks! I dipped the bottom in a little cinnamon then put it in the water and its rooted so fast! When this is planted will it grow a full plant?
I doubt it! I've tried it myself, and only when the schefflera cutting had a piece of stem did the cutting grew into a full plant. With just a leaf, it won't grow any further, though in a small pot it does make for a small livable one leaf plant.
Does it still need the node at the bottom of it? Or can it just grow with the stem?
Can grow with stem
@@Natureflowers thank you so much bro!!! 🥺
I have one I just got from a lady. It's just one leaf like this how do I encourage it to branch out? Also one leaf fell off the top will that encourage more growth elsewhere? I've heard of notching but all I see is some brown rings around the base of the leaf I don't think this are nodes?
Amazing video keep it up..
🌍🌍🌍🌏👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉
Every time I buy this plant leaves just drop off badly so I decided to put in today let’s see if it comes back maybe I keep it to moist not sure tried putting in clay pot too but I may have traumatized the plant before it got adjusted to my atmosphere.
This music is wild
Is this real?
Did you put anything in the water?
Will try it though
During that one month do you change the water and do they stay in light or dark place ?
Plants absolutely need sunlight, not directly as it's still delicate at this stage but light is definitely needed. Behind a window will be good enough. Blessings 😊✨
While I've gotten roots from the stem before, I've never gotten roots like that in only 1 month. Seems kinda fishy to me.
Beautiful 👍👌😉 BRAVO 👏👏👏👏
Did the plant finally grow ? do you have a follow up ?
I'm still waiting for him
@@Natureflowers don't worry buddy it will grow.you'll be amazed when it shout new leaves 😊
@@Natureflowers any updates by now?
😍👌👌
Hola soy de Chile me gustaría saber en que estación del año se hace porque ahora estamos entrando al invierno se puede hacer en esta estación del año?
👍👍👍👍
How often did you change out the water while rooting? Thank you.
In general for this kind of propagation, it would be nice to change the water at least each 3 days. Hope you get good results! 👍
super nápad !!
can we grow it in summer (rainy season in our region at this time)?
Un buen dato, gracias por la información.
what about now? did they grown ?
Beautiful video
WOW
Se eu fizer uma poda de folhagem da sheffera arboricola ela volta a brotar folhas novas nesse galho! Obrigada aguardo retorno!
My question is will the leaf grow branches once rooted?
No it wont
I've tried it. It will get roots but won't grow
Ola quanto tempo elas ficaram na agua para enraizar? E ficaram na meia sombra ?
Ninguem responde🥺
When should I propagate this one???
I must say that from one leave we can’t grow flower despite we have roots. It doesn’t grow as I know. I would be glad if I wrong
Can I change water on daily basis
Water mattno ethra day koodumbol
It has been more than a month and half still no roots . What to do ?
Can it be put straight into the soil??
What did you add to the water
We are in October can i do it now?
Thank you so much for this video
how frequently should we change water
No need node?
Отлично!
Que maravilha receita Deus te abençoe
Lindo cuidado , parabéns!
I just started mine now, it's mid winter here in Melbourne Australia. 🙏🙏🙏
A A A flat stem rooted for me. I didn’t know the node was needed. I just transferred it to soil tonight.
Beautiful
Thanks for the video, I have a follow up question: when the cuttings are in the water, how much light should they get? Is a window ledge ok?
I have mines on a window ledge. It gets bright indirect sunlight. Been rooting them for over a month. Thought of planting them but they roots look so pretty in water culture.
@@Jenjoshstars2012 Honestly no I just keep the vase I have them in full. I fill it up once a week. But one thing I have done is I use a rooting hormone powder on all my cuttings to help them root. It works great.
Lady GeMiNi did you add rooting powder to the water?
@@sirisri767 No I dip the end of the cutting where I cut it in the powder then I place it in the water.
Спасибо, не знала, что можно так, любимая шифлера очень полезная инфа, браво👍 🌵🌿🍀🎄⛄🎄
How much time did it need to start rooting ? 😁
Doesn't take long I started seeing results in just a couple of weeks. They root pretty fast.
Can you do an update ? please 🌸
How long will it take to get mature with new leaves popping out?
I have the same question. There's no node, so possibly never
