  • This was in March I tried to use leaves to propagate Schefflera plant. I used vermiculite as the substrate for cuttings. The operation process is very simple. After more than a month, the leaves of Schefflera plant finally grew roots, but no new shoots germinated. As for whether they can germinate and grow in the end, I look forward to the follow-up...

Great effort bro. But unfortunately plant like these cannot be propagated into a full plant just from leaf. There is some portion of stem required in the cutting from where new growth can happen (from nodes). However, leaf alone can sustain with such root system as it can fulfil its needs on its own.

@@thierrys85 ....okay good to know. Not a good way to propagate then. I cut a piece of my daughters plant with a 2" stem in water and some roots grew than planted it in a pot. And it is growing stems and alot of leaves after a few months. Hers is a miniature green variety. Thanks for feedback.

If anyone is doing this for other than a cool factor dont your wasting your time. Better to top your shefflara and cut each leaf with the stem at the node leave like an inch of the stem then do these steps

In fact, ordinary garden soil will do. It can also take root in water. Propagating with leaves is not recommended though, as it will never grow new leaves.

I did this three years ago and although the leafs are still alive and green they have yet to grow any other leaves. However at the same time, I took a cutting that had sprouted from the plant with multiple shoots, rooted that and it is now a full bushy plant almost three feet tall.

These comments by the ignorant take ls away the great information provided in the video. If it roots, it will grow. That skinny little stem from the cutting, grows into hardwood which in turn produces shoots and growth. Try it yourself and don’t go by what the ignorant say.

@@pinkyssj4 This type of plant cannot be propagated from leaves. There cannot be new growth as there are no nodes or area from where new growth can happen. However, leaves can sustain on its own as it has grown root system for taking all the nutrition and water from soil. There are plants like zz, snake plant etc that can grow from leaves, as they have different functioning but unfortunately not this one.
