    10 mins of focused practice on just a hard bit of a piece of music a few times a day is better than being frustrated for 45 mins or an hour all together.

    I'm watching this again with one more year of experience under my fingers. That's the sign of a good video, that it touches pianists no matter what their experience level.

    Excellent strategies and tips, I agree 100% with every one of them! Still in a beginner status here, I've learned the hard way through trial and error (!) that there is definitely a point where I have to step away from the keyboard, and go do something different LOL Sometimes that happens after only an hour of practice, and rarely reaches, say 3, hours. There's a point of diminishing returns where more time simply does not help. And surprisingly, when I do come back, things start going better LOL

      Yes I think our ability to concentrate dips after a while and at some point practice stops being very productive. It's different for everyone and different each practice session so it's good to try and recognise it. As you say you often find it easier when you come back feeling fresh!

    For me i think what has helped me is practicing chords and inversion, scales and then i play songs in numbers....this helps me get a grip on shapes so i don't have to over think things... and i try not to spend too much time so i don't get frustrated...i try to break my practices in bits

    I'm new to piano and thinking about trying to learn a song after practicing some chords and learning thr keys. Thinking about breaking things down into manageable chunks was helpful, along with the entire video 🙂 thank you for all the videos!!!!

    If you’re mainly focused on blues playing would you put a caveat on tip #1? Comfortability in More fingerings the better without constraint to one or the other to create more freedom in future improvisation? Thanks for channel & work!

      @PianoFromScratch  8 месяцев назад

      It's dependant on your level of ability/experience and the difficulty of what you're playing. There's things I play for example where I don't think about the fingering at all and may do it slightly different each time but there's other things I play which if they are more technically challenging, I will rehearse set fingerings. If you're improvising, of course you can't rehearse exact fingers BUT your ability to find fingerings quickly and intuitively will have come from the years of experience behind you where you have been learning set things and how to use your fingers well.
      In short, if your'e a beginner and playing blues, when you're not improvising I would still practice set fingerings to help you execute what you're playing as best as possible. You could still practice alternate fingerings for specific licks etc once you have it nailed though to make yourself more versatile.

    Hi, thanks for amazing videos. I have a question. Which fingers I should use when I'm just playing lead melody on top of the chords. Should I use exact fingers when I'm running scales or I can play whatever comfortable at the time. Cause it's usually hard to understand where I'm in the scale

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  2 года назад +3

      The fingers to use will be different every time for different melodies, essentially we need to use the fingers that make it the simplest for us to move around and reach the next notes and each melody will move around differently. The scale fingers are just for playing the scale up and down so for example on a C major scale RH uses finger 3 on E, that doesn't mean you only ever play E with finger 3. Hope that clears it up a bit

    I am just starting to learn a little piano and for some reason I keep getting a bad cramp in my right pinky finger and it goes all the way up the side of hand, my wrist and arm, then it hurts so bad I have to stop! And it's Everytime I play! What am I doing wrong? 😖
