    Learning to memorise music is kind of like building a muscle stronger sometimes, I know it feels hard now but it does get better with experience and the more you practice it without always relying on using the sheets etc. What memorisation tips do you have for everyone else? 🎹Also don't forget to hit the like button above, that really helps out!

    Pure gold this stuff. I'd only like to suggest that it is often useful to start ones chunks working forward from the end. This means it gets steadily easier to finish and so easier as you play through rather than heavily overdoing the begining and getting great confidence at the start but getting less confidence as you progress through it. Obviously some pieces have such iconic rifs at the start that it is important to tackle these first.

    These tips have transformed my practice from a seemingly random practice of disconnected tones, scales, chords, riffs and songs to a purposeful and unified practice of connections among tones, scales, chords, riffs and songs. Thanks for the Aha! moment.

    Thanks for all the helpful videos!
    I'm moving on steadily past beginner stuff and into more intermediate/advanced pieces now but still feel like there are times where I may not be using the pedal optimally (times where there might be 8th note octave changes in the bass or playing areppegio chords in the left while trying to play the melody with the right hand)
    would you possibly want to try creating a more advanced pedaling guide in the future?
    keep up the good work!

    thanks for this, these tips are great. currently using an app to learn piano and although i am playing basic songs with both hands when i move on to the next piece i have completely forgotten the last song i spent hours practicing. unless i have the app open and the song selected i cannot play it. not sure if this is normal. but thanks again for the tips!

      Yes you won’t be the only one! I think the main tips that will help you at this stage is to come back to it in short burst, practice going back and forth between different pieces and also just trying to specifically memorise smaller scetions of the piece without looking at the music. Start small with short segments or it’s kind of like trying to run a marathon on your first day of running. It does get better eventually, good luck!

    I am memorizing In The Mood. It is in C major so the first section melody-the right hand-is the C major chord. Broken up. That’s the melody. This video was helpful in noticing that

    I'm personally really struggling with this. I started teaching myself how to play piano about 2 years ago and I can confidently say I probably can't play more than 3 songs fully, from memory. Everything else has already been forgotten almost entirely and I'll have to look it up and essentially relearn it (altho relearning goes much more quickly).
    It's extremely frustrating. I put a lot of effort into learning Clair de Lune, and after being able to play it I moved on to the 3rd mvmt of Moonlight Sonata, and now that I've learned that piece I wudnt even know where to start on Clair de Lune. At this point I'm almost afraid to sink my teeth into a new piece since I think that'll then just cause me to forget the Moonlight Sonata too and be forced to relearn that too, as I've also already forgotten it's first movement and will have to go back and relearn it some day. And all that despite playing/practicing every single day.
    In the last example, along with your 3rd Tip, it also puzzled me that I could forget how to play the 1st movement of the Moonlight Sonata whilst learning the 3rd one, since they're really not that different for the most part. Im a bit at a loss. I dont know if this is something completely normal for all pianists and Im just working with unrealistic expectations.

      Qcontrol, how is your sleep? I'm sure you're aware, but we often underestimate exactly how essential sleep is for memory. One could say that our brain does our memorizing during our sleep. If you're either not sleeping enough hours, or you're uncomfortable and so waking up often/not sleeping deeply, that may be the main culprit.

    Drawing a complete blank on how a routine starts can happen to professional dancers, too. Especially if you try to explain a number you've been doing automatically for months in a show.

    Are you a Bob Marley fan? What do you like most about his music?

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  3 года назад +1

      Yes I am, grew up on his music amongst other things and just a sucker for reggae rhythms. Obviously he has many iconic songs and inspired lots of other musicians. Nothing particularly complicated in his music, but fantastic melodies, groove and well crafted songs.

      @@PianoFromScratch nice! In Brazil, specially in Bahia and Maranhão states, we have a big legion of Marley fans. Not only for black people, but surfers and other tribes too. I am a surfer from Bahia, so... Twice as fan! Now that I live in Portugal, I don't notice many European fans... Good to know his legacy still persists nearby!
