That was an unbelievable save...I lost one weekend plus two days trying to figure out what went wrong when from an error my data was erased and sent back to stone age, at bottom of old version....My apple ID started acting crazy didn't recognize my account, I couldn't start upgrading version from Apple Store, I was stuck in time with that slow version. I tried almost everything, I even contacted the Apple Support team, without success, until accidentally I saw your tutorial and in 5 seconds, my mood jumped from dispare to happiness. Not just I have my version back, I skipped to last possible version allowed to my system, I mean Catalina. Thank you again and God bless you!

If you're having trouble booting to recovery, try holding down the key combination until you see the status bar, and not just the Apple logo... sometimes the status bar appears a few seconds later. I've seen Macs boot back to their current OS many times when users don't wait until the status bar appears. Just a tip if anyone is getting frustrated :).

I was having difficulty using Command and R when restarting as it wasn't showing me a drive to install the original OS which was OS X Yosmite 10.10. Turned out using Option, Command and R made my computer look for the most up to date OS for my computer (Mac Air early 2015). macOS Monterey popped and allowed me to select and follow the steps for install. Yay! So simple but took me a while to find the right advice on line.

You can try recovery over the Internet.
      Try all 3:
Command-R: Start up from the built-in macOS Recovery System. Use this key combination to reinstall the latest macOS that was installed on your system, or to use the other apps in macOS Recovery.
Option-Command-R: Start up from macOS Recovery over the internet. Use this key combination to reinstall macOS and upgrade to the latest version of macOS that’s compatible with your Mac.
Option-Shift-Command-R: Start up from macOS Recovery over the internet. Use this key combination to reinstall the version of macOS that came with your Mac or the closest version that’s still available.
If nothing repairs the missing partition, then your Mac needs to be seen at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store.

Have a MacBook Pro that's been running slow in freezing up and want to do a fresh OS install. If I do this and restore data from time machine backup does it just restore the same problem or only transfer the data and keep the fresh operating system intact?

    • @applesupport

That’s a great question. If you restore just the files, this will not impact the new software. Restoring from a full backup has the potential to bring back any software problems that might be causing the problem. Learn more here: s.apple.com/d2I0Z287A9

In this case, we’d recommend using one of the methods in the “Other macOS installation options” section in that article.
