Along with Hank and Hendrix ,Blackmore was the main reason I picked up a guitar. You can instantly tell when it’s him playing even on the Blackmore Night albums where his acoustic playing is brilliant.Yes he was one to not suffer fools. If he didn’t like you look out, just ask poor old Tony Carey. He didn’t dare try anything on Cozy Powell though😀.No he was never a party animal but he does like a bottle or two.But it’s all about the music with him and although he somewhat lost me after Dio left I still listen to him to this day.And his move to Renaissance music was logical and brilliant.

Blackmore was never a party guy ! He was never into drugs or alcohol, Blackmore was purely always a true musician and a true artist, he was never a part of the commercial aspect of the show business , but purely just music and melody. In my opinion blackmore is the definition of a true musician and arguably the best rock guitarist ever.

Mr. Blackmore is the real guitar God of the 1970s. Ritchie can play any style and proved it. The other members of DP need to give thanks to Ritchie for the songs he wrote. Even the legendary Jon Lord stated Ritchie was the gas pedal of DP. Ritchie rules.

Blackmore was the best guitarist of the 70’s and 80’s. I don’t think he was an asshole. I think most people don’t understand his personality. He is not a bootlicker.
The end of the show with the guitar in the camera and the amps blowing up was epic!! What a grand finale

You can tell Blackmore didn't do drugs by the standards he kept for himself to always play sharply. I remember once seeing Aerosmith and they were stumbling all around. They sounded good but they played like they wanted to get back to the party. Blackmore had standards.

Blackers had his moments, too. The performance at San Diego shortly after CalJam, he went completely off the rails with Burn. I heard it on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a syndicated radio program of live performances. As much as I love Blackmore, everyone has their bad days. Not to mention I remember all of the needling I got from friends over that one....lol!! But IMO, he will always be the greatest ever.

The wait for Purple to come on stage was not quite that long. Maybe an hour and a half, two max. But there was a very long period after Black Sabbath left the stage. Plastic milk jugs for water were passed out earlier in the day, and at one point during the hiatus, everyone started tossing those jugs in the air. Plus, mid April in CA, it’s getting pretty dark by 7:30. I recall there still being a fair amount of residual light from the setting sun by the time the Purps came on stage. Moody, cantankerous, whatever you want to call him, I don’t blame him for standing his ground. These days, a lot of people could learn from that. All in all, in my book, he will always be the greatest guitarist ever from the greatest band of all time.

Ritchie has a great sense of humor, I just think he was always serious about what he wanted musically and he wanted the guys he'd hire in Rainbow to sound the way he wanted, and some musicians would steer of course sometimes which Ritchie wouldn't tolerate.
Ritchie had good instincts, I mean just look at all the talented guys he used who went on to be big names. I've read about everything about Ritchie that's out there and the stories are wonderful.
He's a guy who went the direction he wanted to go throughout his career and was successful the whole way. He could've achieved much greater success but that wasn't his primary motivation, very unique and extremely talented man.

I don't blame Ritchie one bit for the Cal Jam stuff. He was finally persuaded to by management to play the festival under the condition that they go on at dusk.Contracts are signed for a reason and I applaud him for refusing to go on early. I watched on ABC In Concert in April '74.It wasn't live. It was edited down to a couple or few songs of each band. I think the promoters were worried that while Ritchie was stalling for 2+ hours, the crowd would get ugly and violent with no music happening. Everything ended up fine.I would like to hear ELP's take on what happened, since they had to follow Purple.

    • @tyronesharp401

I read that ELP' S management was going to sue Purple for "damage to the stage".

That would be interesting, if it had been recorded on previously. Since losing Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, the only one left is Carl Palmer. Admittedly i came to the show to see Deep Purple. But we stayed until the very end, and I personally thought ELP put on a fine performance. Same goes for Black Sabbath.

Introvert, wind up merchant, a Sahara dry sense of humour, all of which I loved, bully.
Good player, of course, wonderful and instantly recognisable tone.
Not given the credit as a songwriter, he deserves IMO.
I have always had him as my favourite player but not in the same league as JEFF BECK as an instrumentalists IMO ( He is on the record as saying so himself)
I perfectly understand his switch to Pop mediaeval stuff. Can you imagine just how boring it is to play Smoke on the Water every night for 50 years!
As for Candice, a lovely lady but nothing special as a singer, and the only musician he never fired!
Believe his mother in Law is their manager.
Saw that show years ago, it left me cold as do all of the albums, some of which I bought, played once and never listened to again.
That said, RB has been a part of my life since the early 70s and provided some amazing exciting music.

Many have said the show went better than others. reason was that, the stage was on railroad tracks and would slide the bands after sets. this allowed the
next band to set up and go on way faster than waiting to let a band tear down their gear. There was 2 sound systems for the 200 thousand there. I heard It was ELP's
system in the middle of the fans for the rest to hear the show in back.

  • @larsnilsson3438

He had the legal right, to not go on stage, before sundown, according to his contract. They could yell and scream how much they wanted, he did the right thing. I understand, completely his reasons. The show was awesome, completely amazing and what he did on Space truckin´was great. The cameraman went to close several times and Ritchie told him to back, he did not listen. What he did then with the explosion and the burning stage, great show. Here Deep Purple did one great show and for many, memorable.

Glenn Hughes: We managed to delay by about 20 minutes but the sun only went down about halfway through our set. But it fired us up; it gave a bit of an edge to our performance. Ritchie had a bit of a moan - he hadn’t had time to change into his stage clothes. Then Blackmore attacked a cameraman.
