Looking back, these cannons on the Invisible Hand in Revenge of the Sith just feels like a sci-fi version of naval battles back when ships were powered by sails. Cool to look at, even if it is a bit on the nose
I got the same feeling Then I found out that George Lucas actually got alot of inspiration from the looks of weapons of ww1 and ww2 And battle tactics Thats when I was like oh That's probably why
the excuse is that the coruscant battle was so crowded that it became efficient to simply broadside ships on both sides and fire everywhere, because there were hundreds of cis ships. most republic battles didnt seem to come down to favoring broadsides first.
I remember these guns from Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars. Having to deal with Silver and Gold ones were frustrating but not impossible. But they were very powerful when highjack them to use against the CIS.
2:36 It didn't just drive off the acclamators, the acclamator on the far left was destroyed after its engine was hit, demonstrating the power of these guns.
@@jiyuhong5853yeah but it was at low enough altitude that even if it was only disabled it would still crash before the crew could regain control and change direction.
Makes sense, proton torpedoes are well known to have effects on capital ships, so you can imagine (and see) just how powerful a gun that propels a proton warhead much faster and with much more space for boom without guidance systems can be.
I love the J-1 Proton cannon. It is strong enough to damage capital ships yet accurate enough to take out bombers and gunships easily from such long distances.
I'm glad you're able to make a discussion of these dual purpose artillery droids since they're one of my favorites in the cis & the separate Droid Army being my favorite military faction in all of star wars.
I assume a major real world inspiration for the J1 must've been the German 88 Field Cannon of the WW2 era, which could reliably function as both an anti-armor/anti-air gun.
Loved these thing in the broadside dual with the Invisible hand and Guarlara... but watching those shells being left by Wall during that broadsideis just asking for Turbo Laser to hit it.
Personally, I would have changed the direction of the big armor pieces up top so it actually had decent frontal protection. The eyes are at the perfect level to pop out of underneath the plates and there could be a cutout for the gun. But, I'm not an engineer in the SW universe so it could be because of some cooling or cost factors.
It is pretty odd to have the armour where it was,a frontol shield definitely would've been better. A good idea for a field upgrade, though, would be putting a Droidekas' bubble shield around the main body, since that would only need the bolting on of the shield projector, instead of fashioning a piece of durasteel or what have you around the exposed bits.
I posit that CIS droid artillery would have been vastly superior to the Clone-crewed artillery, for the following reasons: 1. 100% accurate laying (aiming) the gun for every round, excepting mechanical errors and the like. Typically in my experence in an old schoolfield howitzer battery the layer (guy seated beside the barrel aiming the barrel and pulling the lever to fire) was generally required to aim it within a tolerance of 1 mil (unit of measurement), and I'm sure droids can do it with even more precision, 2. Able to do #1 100% accurately and precisely for extended amounts of time, in contrast to the clone crews who tire and accuracy drops. 3. Counter battery fire: Droids have no fear and being under enemy counterbattery fire won't affect their accuracy. 4. Much better able to coordinate battery, battalion and division level salvos (where the guns fire all at once). Their weak spot would probably have been in unexpected terrain, unconventional gun deployment sites or basically adapting to unorthodox situations that occur.
Meanwhile the Clones doing counterbattery fire on the AV-7 Cannon: haha, missed us! Cya, as they prepared to shoot and scoot again using the AV-7 Cannon's repulsorlifts to reposition.
No wonder the invisible hand went up in flames all those proton bombs just stacked up next to the cannons if 1 cannon got hit that entire battery would go up

You sold out to a grubby lawyer? It’s bad enough to be assailed by that leech on radio, billboards, placards, and TV! Now they’ve ruined one of my favorite RUclipsrs! Highly disappointed, man.
@donaldrussell9406 yeah, but it’s like saying “there so annoying” instead of “they’re so annoying”. “There” means a place, “they’re” is short for “they are”. I seriously can’t believe I’m having to describe basic f***ing grammar to someone on RUclips.
@@koopatroopa7968 Worst part is, this isn't even a question of grammar. It's someone (several, actually) using the WRONG WORD entirely. I first started hearing it like a year ago and figured, "Ah well. I knew what they meant and it's probably just a onetime slip." Then it kept happening, and on more than one channel. lol
The J1’s more powerful, the ammo from it can go through shields (a J1 was able to shoot down an Aclamaitor at the Battle of Ryloth pretty easily) whereas AV-7 ammo cannot as mentioned in the Clone Wars movie during the Battle of Christophsis
@@Kyzen_Wrellthe clone option is also more maneuverable, and easier to transport, so I'd say realistically in the role of artillery the clone option is better, but when the ranges close in these big guns are better simply because they preform better against heavy armor
you all see the canons firing a few rounds each without seeing anyone loading the gun at the complex sence? Wouldn't that mean they have more then one round in there chamber? If u look at the bottom right corner just before 3.44
Im not sure if this is cannon or not but in Lego star wars 3 the clone wars the j-1 proton cannon has a mini gun under it to fend off enemy troops (same thing with the AV-7 i think its a gameplay thing though)
Why does it need a control chair? Why does it need a gunner? It’s the same problem I have with the AAT, they both should be self piloting, they’re part of the droid army.
The AAT was made before the droid army, and was desighned to allow organics to use it, not all AAT crews were droids, it was basically the only tank option with widespread use that the cis could give to planets for an organic to pilot, and this artillery peice is in a similar place, though more optimized for droid use due to the heavy shells being difficult to reload

Could be to prevent damage from something like airburst munitions, which in the real world is a common choice of counter-battery artillery

Should the J-1 show up in Star Wars Legion?
Is it just me or do they look like 88 mm guns?
The artillery must be based on WW1 and 2 inspiration
could be flak 8.8 because it was used as anti air/anti tank killer
and also sometimes as artillery if there wasn't any near
Starwars version of the flak 88
A very powerful weapon, but it can be very easily defeated by outmaneuvering it
Official, or man made, does that mean, *shudders* that Lego is natural…
The J1 is similar to the 8'8, its just substantially slower.
When you so early you beat the video showing up in you sub box and the kids saying first...
All these measurements confuse me, I need it all in standard wookie measurements
first?
Very slow to aim the cannon
