I bought the three first sets second hand from someone for 11 euro per set. I just couldn't resist. They were barely used. I'm going to buy the Monarch set and skintones sets as quickly as possible. Besides that, I have the 160 Brutfuner oil pencils. Cheap as hell, but remarkably good for being budget pencils. For a beginner like me anyway. Prismacolors are still a bit too expensive for me (Europe) so the Black Widow pencils seemed like a good alternative for now. Costs about 100 euro in total whereas the 150 Prisma Premier set would set me back 170 euro. Great review! I'm so glad I went with these.
Sounds like you got a bargain! The Brutfurner pencils remind me of my Guang Hui and I wonder if they are the same just repackaged under a different name (seems to be common with my Guang Hui pencils). My GH are lovely and they were so cheap for 160 pencils for a budget brand. Prismacolor seem very expensive in Europe. They are my favorite pencil but I wouldn't pay that price for them haha! @@coloringqueen Finished two WIPS. Yay. Then found one or two or three that I had forgotten about because of being in books I hadn't opened for a while. And then somehow I started a new page without myself noticing I was doing it. How does that happen? But it is in a small, probably unknown book. At least I have never seen someone having colored a page in it. And I began it doing only some leaves during a Zoom cocktail hour when I didn't have to think. It's one of those pictures of an animal made up of flowers and leaves, in this case an elephant.
I've had the two skintone sets in my Amazon basket for about two weeks now. I will get them eventually. I really like pencil sets with just skintone colours. I just need to start colouring more. I haven't been doing it that much lately, so I can't really justify getting them at the moment.
I had them in my basket for a long time too! In the end my need for a full set won haha! I haven't been coloring at all ...other than swatches ..seem to have lost my mojo haha! Hopefully, we'll both get back into coloring soon. Stay safe. Happy coloring x
In Canada on Amazon, a complete set of Black Widows is between $130 - 135, whereas a complete set of 150 Prismacolor Premier are $138 or you can get 132 of those for $95 right now.
That's my point exactly ...often it is just better to get an outright set of pencils where you can easily buy open stock replacements (and often go on sale). Stay safe. Happy coloring x
I recently bought the three initial sets as I'd heard good things and watched your review, too. I wanted so much to like them, and while they are fairly soft and creamy, their lack of pigmentation was a problem for me. I felt like I had to work really hard to get color on the page. So... They're going back. I haven't found anything I like as much as Prismacolor and Polychromos.
I'm sorry to hear that you didn't fancy them as they do have some nice colors but for the price (depending on specials) often you are just better sticking with the main brands especially with the ability to get open stock. FYI they work very well in Johanna's new book and I've been using them in there ........but I'll always love my Prismacolors the most :) Stay safe. Happy coloring x
That is so weird. I own Polys, prismas, derwents, and these had even more pigment than those for me....Did you sharpen them before testing? Sometimes wax pencils can develop a coating over time and once you sharpen it it goes away. My fav thing about these pencils is actually the insane pigment. I actually reach for these over my prismas and polys.
You have hints of yellow in your skin if you have a warm tone to your skin and you color skin with a mixture of yellow and oranges and whatnot to get a skin tone.
Thank you for sharing. I have been checking these out for a few weeks now. I really am looking for more Neon colors. Colors that pop. I see some of that in these sets.

Honestly, I would skip the prismas. I bought them and now barely touch my really expensive set now that I have these.

These pencils are actually water soluble I add a touch of water to smooth every thing out. Instead of using Gamsol.

In Australia at the moment prismacolour are near enough to double black widow so it's worth it for us.
