Necessary reading in that seminal series is the one where Dr. Arcane is creating deformed creatures including using the body of a young womans father that Swamp Thing befriends. A Frankenstein looking creature with most of the story told from his POV. Fantastic!

Before Swamp Thing was in his own comic, I remember seeing his story in either Creepy or Eerie magazine. In the end, a murdered little girl was thrown in the swamp and became his daughter, and they lived happily ever after. No joke this was around 1970.

It's worth noting that Jason Woodrue dissected Swamp Thing to discover that there was nothing left of his human form. This was also written by Alan Moore and penciled by John Totelben, inked by Steve Bissette, if memory serves.
Woodrue was the Floronic Man, a pre-exisisting character with plant based powers, much like Poison Ivy.
Alan Moore, eh? That eccentric knucklehead.:)
Also, the art is so intricate because Totelben was going blind, and had to work closer and closer to the page. It's extraordinary. It's worth owning, even in reprints.:)

The new DC TV series pilot is mind-blowing in set design, CGI and the horror elements. The morgue scene was definitely a homage to that classic segment in John Carpenter's The Thing (you'll know when you see it). Though we don't see much of Swampies form, what we are shown is a perfectly realistic take on the comic character that doesn't look at all like that rubber one in the 80s film. This is going to be a fantastic series and just as awesome as "Cloak & Dagger", "The Doom Patrol" and "Titans".

I have read some Swamp Thing, but I'm not to familiar with the avatars. I do believe there are more then one avatar at the time, e.g. Poison Ivy is also an avatar of the green, and both Auqaman and Naiad are avatars of the blue and so on.

Swamp Thing is badass. Alan Moore is a genius storyteller for sure. Obviously he didn’t create the character, but he evolved the character. Gave him more depth, not being so one dimensional so to speak. Also, I’ve read and watched about many fans that complain that everything is being made to be darker and more mature, taking away from the lighthearted versions of the early years of comics. Um, yea, I’m an adult that loves comics. I want dark, complex, violent stories and characters. I do get that not all comic book fans are adults, but that’s what kid’s cartoons are for. You gotta have a balance of both. You can’t just have content for kids only or for adults only. We already have that but there’s people actually complaining that there’s stuff being made for adults in general like all they want is the lighthearted kids stuff. To each their own I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ll take my mature content thank you 😂

Alan Moore's Swamp Thing was DEEP! ST grew from thinking he was Alan.
Then he learned he wasn't & had to deal with that mind bender.
Then he learned how powerful he was as an elemental.
Then, he fought Batman over several comics & brought Gotham city to its knees for areesting Abby for loving a non-human.
Then Gotham hired Lex Luthor to kill him, which just made him "jump" to another planet while his body burned.
Then, he saved a planet from dying & even time traveled a bit on his search to make it back to Earth.
Oh, and he saved Superman when he got sick & went mad from a spore from a Kryptonian meteorite. It involved a kind of mind meld with Superman via the spore in Supe's body & it was trippy. Of course there was fighting.
