The fact that they even followed the usual format of a musical is amazingly hilarious
- overture establishing the setting
- protagonist's 'I want' song
- minor character's 'I want' song
- corny antagonist song number
- complete ensemble to end an act (usually in the form of a reprise or referencing previous melodies)
SNL and SCTV are really good at referencing and making fun of the common tropes and formats of a given genre. SCTV can cut to the bone, though, but a lot of people sleep on SNL doing the same. They don't get it right some of the time, but they try.
The first funny SNL skit since 2022
@@channelchen what about the shrimp tower
well, they've worked in nyc for 50 years ...
Apparently you haven't been paying attention in that time @@channelchen
'I was not told about this' - ridley scott 😂😂😂😂
😂
That was hilarious!
All the idiots who talk about SNL being past its prime is not seeing stuff like this. It exceeds anything the show did in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
But he raves about it, so it fine!
I'm here for a musical remake of #WhiteSquall , Ridley Scott! 😁👍
Paul hit that last note "Ro-oo-ome" perfectly 😅
Haha first time seeing another Barbie and Oppenheimer but they made it a smash up songs and live acting instead haha!
@@userin379 Probably got some tips from his gf Gracie Abrams 😊
Paul riding on a broom singing caught me off guard, I laughed so hard.
The whole skit is perfect except for the "flossing" part. Boomers ruin everything.
I knew he could sing, but wow at that.
BRO the corpses flopping to the music at the end, then Paul's "Ro-oome" I CAN'T EVEN 😂😂
I caught that too 😅
Beautiful
YES those were the best parts (in addition to all of Paul’s flamboyant dance moves)
👏🏼👍🏼😂
W pfp
I lost it when Paul is flying with broom and sing "Roo-me"
Plus the witch hat
Great Wicked reference.
what
Paul Mescal is the only one allowed to be cast as live action Hercules!! Disney, this is his official audition, take notes!
OMG YES!!!
His voice is incredible
His face is too British to be a Greek character
@@danielles7766 he actually has a Roman nose. He looks very much like ancient statues.
@MsTriangle I think you meant those British empire era statues that appropriated Greco-Roman statues because hard Naur
It’s amazing that they can conceive, write, costume, record, sing, lipsynch, special effect, and edit this piece in less than a week. It definitely takes a village - and no sleep. Great job!
And they have added protections since the writers strike ❤
I was thinking the same thing while watching! It’s truly incredible and takes a group of very talented people working together to make it happen. Kudos to the SNL team! Brilliant! 🙌👏🎉
For musical sketches like this, I think they're probably conceived and written in advance.
I wonder if the the actual gladiator movie gives $ cause it is good promotion 🤔
@@josephg9465 Conceived, written, storyboarded, pre-production, and set building started weeks or months in advance. The hard work is all done in 4-5 days though which is insane.
Good for Bowen Yang for being in both Wicked AND Gladiiator. Get that coin!
Also Paul Mescal has a nice voice.
@@Sharpe1502 I know right? Now I’m definitely wishing he gets cast in a real musical
indeed he has
In high school, he was Javert in Les Miserables and the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera.
@@JeddtheJedi oh that is fascinating. EARTH SHATTERING dare i say.
@ramirezproductions0826 i don't know if you know but he has been cast in a film adaptation of merrily we roll along directed by richard linklater!
"Movies are in such a weird place right now." 😂😂
That little hip-shaking Paul does cracked me up. And Mikey Day's rap. Oh yeah! Well done SNL
Same, those were probably my favorite parts of this sketch 😆
That goofy-looking hand gesture when Paul leaps into the next screen got me.
when he starts to shimmy 😆 this is an absolute masterpiece
Please dont waste your money watching this movie. It was literally the same story as gladiator 1. Youre welcome.
😂😂😂😂
The hip shake killed me 😂
I love the grounded reality of this channel!! Retirement took a toll on my finances, but I am so excited with my involvement in the digital market. $172k monthly has been life changing. Regardless of how bad it gets on the economy.
Hello how do you make such monthly??
I love how Paul was down for this and did THE SINGING AND THE DANCING!
And hip rocking!

That doesn't have to be a bad thing. @@JohnnyTexas-s1f
@@JohnnyTexas-s1fIt isnt lol...
@Duck-gk3rq lol are you dense? It was the exact same story/formula except instead of one king there were two and there was denzel that was added in. This was like star wars 7 vs 4, just a cash grab.
One of the most timely and ingenious skits I’ve seen in a while
Only better that all I think of is adding some of Russell Crowe singing. If he only knew!
Literally!!!!!!
100% 🎉🙌👏
Check out "Rome Song" with Jason Momoa.
Without meaning to perhaps it seems to sum up everything wrong with modern movies. IMO flat out one of the best bits they’ve ever done.
His incredibly campy little hop at 1:47 🤣
The "Roooooaaaaooommmmeee!" at the end had my dying!!!!!😂
His elphaba expression is spot on😂😂
Okay, the composer of SNL needs to get a raise RIGHT NOW. (S)he so perfectly captured the musical sounding aspects, and that rap sounded exactly like something Lin would actually write. Probably the best skit of the night.
I am seriously wondering if Lin actually helped them write that bit. It was so hilariously spot on.
hahhahah 100% agree
Jane Wickline wrote this sketch and the lyrics
Felt a little more like Eminem rather than Lin but t'was entertaining regardless
@@maz367She's awesome. This was the best I have seen all season!
i watched both wicked and gladiator in the same week and i never expected SNL to somehow tie the two together, but this is my favorite thing ever. i have not stopped laughing for 10 minutes.
Last year there was Barbenheimer, this year it's Glicked.
@@lectrifyin1Imagine a movie similiar to Barbie and Wicked premiering the same day 28 Years Later?
Same! I feel the exact same way as well.
@@lectrifyin1true lol

NOT THE “LOATHING” dance with swords instead of books😂😂😂😂 2:30
Good catch. I watched three times and missed that
I just found them and this is hilarious 😂
Hahahaha
Yess!! I saw this too.. so good!
I peeped that 😂
Not enough people talking about Jane Wickline’s mini song, it got me so good! And the Lin Manuel bit too!
Yes, her mini song cracked me up! "I've got a good feeling about them.." 😂😂😂
The little posing jump when he says "someday theyll know my name" 🤣🤣🤣
Disney....I think we just found your live-action Hercules! He's funny, charismatic, and his voice is perfect! I can easily see Paul Mescal belting out "Go The Distance"!
Fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Plus "They Call Me Gladiator" sounds similar (or at least conveys the same feelings of a young male character trying to find his place in the world) to "Go the Distance".
He would be perfect for the role, but then his career would probably suffer because of all the haters trying to destroy the film and everyone in it. His image is already being damaged by all the hate he's unjustifiably getting for Gladiator 2.
@@matiasdevaglia4541 Why would Mescal's career suffer if he played Hercules? He's a white actor whod be playing a divine Hero of greek mythology. There'd be no backlash.
PLEASE that would be amazing
Can I just say major props to the effects department in this skit??
Yes!! Right?
Nah you can't say that
Definitely!!!💯🤩
Yesss
The Rap Battle ending with the two of them Flossing like a couple of Dorks was my favorite part!! 😅
This is a caliber of comedy that has been missing from SNL for years. Good job, SNL. Good job. This is magnificent.
the last RO-O-O-O-OME was hysterical!!! it had no business being that funny
LMAO THEY’RE DOING THE LOATHING DANCE
IKR
YES! 😂
I didn't know Paul can sing like that! He have great voice! Also I would watch this version of Gladiator 2 xD
yeah he started off in musical theatre i think. he played the phantom in phantom of the opera at his uni im pretty sure
And he has musical film based on the opera Carmen out - “Carmen”.
Right?? Pleasantly surprised. And my husband also says he would watch this version too!😂
He will be singing in upcoming movies. History of Sound with Josh O'Connor next year.
Please dont waste your money watching this movie. It was literally the same story as gladiator 1. Youre welcome.
3:42 elphaba mentioned💚
Possible the best skit of the year. And wow to the production!
MIKEY DAY KILLED THE EMPEROR RAPPING LIKE EMENIM😂
But was it cake?
Rapping like Lin Manuel Miranda but sure
He probably wrote the entire rap itself.
@@bjmurray1842 Longfellow was the cake
it wasnt supposed to be eminem??
This was solid and I laughed through the whole thing, but when that last shot of him flying on the broomstick singing "RooooOOOOOOOoOoOoOoOOOOOOOOOmmmme" like in Wicked, I nearly fell off the couch. I admit I'm not that familiar with Paul Mescal, but if you can win me over on SNL then I'm typically a fan of yours for life.
Right?? That part was perfection and hilarious! 😂👌🏾
"no place like rome" is officially going on every musical theater bangers playlist 😍😍
This can not end here. Now I NEED to see Paul Mescal in a musical movie!!!. HILARIOUS.
One of my favorite sketches I think.
I really appriciate that they thought of us ladies too.
And wow she's beautiful.
3:02 is my favorite part and I love that he's using the sword as a microphone 😂
1:28 the hips!!😂😂

1:23 Paul Mescal can play any Disney prince if he wanted, especially Hercules. Singing while fighting is exactly what I imagine from a Disney movie.
Totally agree!
Sorry to burst your buble. but Hercules is going to be played by a flamboyant black actor. It's almost 2025 get on board the DEI express or stay behind.
The nod to lin manuel Miranda is, PERFECT
My favorite part 😂😂😂😂 loved it
Is that LMM in a cameo as a guard to the left of the emperor? (Probably not but it sure looks like him!)

“Movies are in a such weird place right now” needs to be on a t-shirt 1:59
This was hilarious, superbly performed, and a very accurate parody of musicals. And the fact that they kept staring straight into the camera while singing made it 10x funnier
This is so densely packed with high quality writing, great physical comedy mixed with great one liners, along with weird al level musical parody, this is just top tier shit, i could see this getting last season’s mario kart skit type praise in regards to pre-recorded sketches, hell im doin it right now
It could have ended at 1 minute and it would have been great, same thing at 2 minutes, but it kept on delivering.
I'd like to add Mario was before the writers strike so this current team received better protections and pay
Same writers, Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, and also director, Mike Diva.
"Rome Song" with Jason Momoa was also great.
Jane was also a writer on this
1:47 Paul’s little hop will be in my brain for the rest of the week
It's 1:57 for me😂
Thank you for the time stamp
It’s so majestic tho
So good 😂
Not to mention the slashing of the sword matching the music 😂😂
This was way too good 😆😆😆 the wife who had "a good feeling" 😆
Lmao the production value of this skit is incredible! I'm dead ahah
I love how Paul is gonna be auditioning for every movie musical after this sketch! He's got a great voice, and sells this!
He has played the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera. Paul started his career in a musical.
_"I wasn't told about this"_
- Ridley Scott
Such a rave review😂
I laughed so hard at this 😂
…and it was all the better without his involvement. 😒
@@ltdowney Why? He doesn't like prancing fairies?
@@DonLewis86753 What? Because he’s not that great a director any more. He’s all-in on CGI, does only one take and then redoes the whole shot in post. His longtime cinematographer hates working with him now. I’m not sure what you thought I meant.
holding space for paul mescal's vocals
That's really powerful.

Written by Mikey Day, Streeter Seidell and Jane Wickline. Big props to them! Mikey was fantastic as the crazy Roman Emperor! Absolutely stole the show!
where can you see the writing credits for each skit?
Why am I not surprised that Jane Wickline contributed? The verse she sang before her character got killed feels very Wickline-ian to me.
1:24 😂😂😂😂 this might honestly be my new favorite SNL skit
I could go for a full version of this song 😂
I'm unironically obsessed with these songs, they are actually really good
i love that the floss just evolved to humping the air
" Stab my Way to freedom" feels very Hercules and mulan , Great sequence.
I just said it conveyed the same feelings of a young man trying to make a name for himself in the world as "I Can Go the Distance". I guess it has some of the feelings of a person wanting to be more than how society labels them as Mulan's "Who I Am Inside", but not much.
It kinda does 🤔
Sorry, but this is the best skit ever. When the dead gladiators 'popped' at the chorus... hilarious.
I still think it’s pedro pascal as Mario but this is a close second
@@BigpopsMcGee it's a close tie.
I need to hear more of Paul Mescal singing STAT!!

Mikey Day is the assassin! He never misses.
One of the best skits of all time. Paul is a massive talent and props to everyone for pulling this off.

that little hop he does in 1:46 is the best thing
"There's no place like Rome, there's no place like Rome", chanted Lucius, his eyes closed as he tapped his ruby slippers together and wished his way back to his beloved city.
THE BROOM AT THE END PAHAHAHHAHAHA

I know right, it's a surprisingly catchy idea.
Irish people and their often heavenly voices. A gorgeous Irish guy with a heavenly voice? Everbody has to be in love now.
